First look at Lego Simpsons

UPDATE – LEGO have released official pictures of the upcoming Simpsons Collectible Minifigs.

Lego really needs to contain these product leaks. Eurobricks member Carlos S has graced us with some very clear shots of the box for upcoming set 71006 The Simpsons House, sending the internet and AFOLs into a frenzy about the hotly anticipated Simpsons theme. I don’t recall a licensed theme raising so much hype before, but hey, it was bound to happen when Lego decided to use one of the most iconic animated sitcoms in history.

Here’s a look at the front and back of the gargantuan 2523 piece set which features the Simpson’s family house.

My immediate reaction when I first saw the leaked photos is the number of pieces. At 2523 pieces, it dwarfs even the Tower of Orthanc when it comes to piece count. I have to say that the house looks pretty underwhelming, because it is what it is, a blocky average looking animated suburban home recreated in Lego.

While it may be one of the most iconic homes ever built, I’m struggling to see the aesthetic value of it in Lego form. Thankfully, the leaker also managed to give us a look at the back of the box, which allows us to have a better look at the interior.

Like the Monster Fighters Haunted House, The Lego Simpsons House folds open, very much like a traditional dollhouse with 8 different rooms that does a pretty great job replicating the Simpson’s home. Familiar haunts such as the kitchen, living room (where you can recreate the iconic Simpsons family on a couch shot!), sitting room and bedrooms all feature in the house.

I can’t wait to get a closer more detailed look at the interiors, but from the leaked shots it looks like the Lego designers did a tremendous job capturing all the little details of the house. On the outside, we get a garage which houses Homer’s famous pink sedan. There’s some additional tools and detailing in the garage which is a little hard to make out from the image. There are a couple more accessories outside the house like a barbecue grill and a skate ramp for Bart but nothing overly fancy.

You get the entire Simpsons family in minifig form except Abe Simpson. Funnily enough, Ned Flanders makes an appearance in the set which doesn’t make much sense to me. Abe Simpson would’ve been a much better fit, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, there are no details on pricing, but I’m going to hazard a guess that it’ll cost about $200-$250 USD. Since it’s a licensed set, I wouldn’t be surprise if it’ll cost US$250. I just hope that the dreaded “Aussie tax” won’t cause the set to be too expensive here down under.

Apparently, the set is Direct-to- Consumer which means it won’t show up on most department stores or toy shops but will be exclusively available via Lego’s online store or in official Lego Stores. No news on when it’ll be released in Australia, but my local friendly neighbourhood Lego store I’m Rick James Bricks reckons it’ll be released in the second half of 2014.

I’m going to withhold judgement on this set till I get to build it myself, which I most likely will since I’m quite a big fan of the Simpsons. Who isn’t a fan of the longest running sitcom in the world? My only concern is that while it may be a hefty build and will have a cool dollhouse vibe, as an Adult Fan of Lego, I’m mostly going to be displaying it and most of the details will hidden away inside. Still, it is an iconic structure and it’ll be a cool thing to have on my display shelf.

Since the leak has all but confirmed the set, the ball is in Lego’s court to officially announce it to the world.
