LEGO unveils stunning Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu set

LEGO 70751 Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu (1)

UPDATE: The Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu is now available for purchase for LEGO VIP members!

UPDATE: The Australian price for 70751 Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu has been revealed – the set will cost $299! The set will be available on the Australian LEGO.com store. Check out the official listing here.

Early this morning, LEGO unveiled the flagship model of the Ninjago theme – 70751 Temple of Airjitzu. This behemoth of a set weighs in at a whopping 2028 pieces and contains 12 minifigures, including all the main Ninjago characters such as Lloyd, Kai, Jay, Zane, Cole, Nya and Sensei Wu.

No baddies here – this is a purely zero-conflict civilian set.

The set’s release date is 18 August 2015 for LEGO VIP members, and 1 September 2015 for a general release. There is no Australian price yet, but watch this space when the price becomes available.

I have to say that I am completely blown away by the scale and details of this set. It’s almost like a love letter from LEGO to Oriental and Japanese architecture.

The temple structure is the centrepiece of the set and has plenty of dollhouse-like play features from behind.

LEGO 70751 Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu - Bridge

I have to say that when I first saw photos of this set, it immediately evoked memories of 2009’s stunning Medieval Market Village – a set considered one of LEGO’s finest.

The Temple of Airjitzu has a lot in common with the hallowed MMV such as the periphery blacksmith (blue building) and smuggler’s market (green building) as well as plenty of beautiful flourishes like the bridge.

There’s so much I love about this set and I am actually considering buying this from LEGO as soon as its released. I’m a huge fan of Japanese culture and history and I feel that this set does a fantastic job capturing the distinct look of Japanese architecture.

Watch the designer video to see the set in action and see the set designers gush about all the neat little details they’ve managed to pack into this set. The pictures don’t do this set justice, you’ll have to see the set from different angles and viewpoints to truly appreciate it as a whole.

I absolutely love that LEGO designed this set. Let’s not kid anyone, this is aimed squarely at Adult LEGO fans, although Ninjago fans are probably as excited as well.

You could remove the Ninjago minifigs and this set would still be able to stand on its own two feet. That, I believe is a hallmark of any great set.

I’ll say it again, this is the second (Oriental-themed) coming of the Medieval Market Village and I am so so so excited to get my hands on this set. I definitely want more sets like this, so I’m going to be putting my money where my mouth is to support what LEGO is doing and let them know that there is a demand for sets on such a scale.

Are you as hyped up for this set as I am? Let me know what you think of the Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu in the comments!

Thanks Jay. Although regular Ninjago sets may not be selling well now (too many other choices!) I reckon the Temple would be a bit unique in that sense if it made it to stores. At 20% discount large collectable sets sell like hot cakes…if the recent trend we are seeing in Big W, Myer, Target etc is anything to go by. Good point about the Nijago movie. If it features it would be a perfect marketing opportunity for one of the major retailers to shore up an exclusive deal…here’s hoping they are listening!

    • Jay says:

Yeah, I also think that these “large” exclusives are typically quite expensive for retailers. Apparently, retailers have to pay a premium for LEGO exclusives.

  2. Mark says:

So now that 2016 has passed do you think there is any chance The Temple of Airjitsu will make it to Australian retail stores in 2017? I really want to get it but I’m still holding out for a discount!

    • Jay says:

I really thought we’d see it this year. But now that we’re in 2017… I think we may get skipped over just like The Tower of Orthanc. I can check in with LEGO Australia, but I don’t think I’ll get a solid answer! It also seems like Ninjago isn’t selling as well this year.

It’s a long shot… but I hope that they keep it around until the Ninjago Movie hits!

  3. Arthur says:

Does anyone know if this is available in Australia? Have checked all the major stores but can’t seem to find it.

  4. nikolas says:

I NEED THIS SET. IT IS SO MEGA GINORMOUS AWESOME AND EXTREEMLY COOL?????????????

  5. Kevin says:

I cannot wait for this set, I was saving up for a laptop but when I saw just2good announce this I instantly changed plans, already got the money but the set is gonna come out when school has already started 🙁

    • Jay says:

I think a lot of people changed their minds when this was officially announced! Can’t you build it while at school? You could totally take your time with it

      • Kevin says:

I probably will but the school days will be a hassle and on saturdays I usually work at parks gardening with him so when I could ever get a chance I’ll be able too

  6. Jaclyn Ngan says:

Oh wow, that’s such a beauty. It looks something like one of the old Ninjas set that I’ve always wanted as a kid.

    • Jay says:

Yes! I remember those Ninja sets – they were so cool with the trap doors and stuff. Too bad I could never afford them back then, but I can now!

  7. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL! And now we know the blue and red ninja! It’s Nya, the WATER NINJA!

  8. What a huge set! says:

I’m agreeing with all here – with an exception. I won’t be buying this set. I suppose now I’m realising that I enjoy LEGO more by living vicariously through other people, namely YouTubers such as JangBricks and The Brick Show as well as through you, Jay. I’ve come to realise that I have so many interests, not all of which can have me spending money on. It’s a sad but true reality. And while anyone’s income is finite, our desires are bottomless.

I would also have absolutely NOWHERE to store/display this huge set 🙁

Can’t wait for you to review this set 😀

    • Jay says:

Haha, that used to be me too! Letting fans experience sets and live vicariously is one of the reasons I do what I do!

Haha, I’m shuddering figuring how to take a photo of this when I eventually get my hands on it. Hopefully that won’t be too far off!

  9. Dave says:

I agree Jay, simply cannot wait for this one!

  10. Mark says:

Totally agree Jay, this set is stunning! I’ve never purchased a Ninjago set this is a must-by for me. I think Lego are brave for going big on this one, as I’m guessing a lot of parents of Ninjago fans will faint at the price, but I think sales will show it was a calculated risk. Some very interesting build techniques and features and I love the use of the garage doors to get the roof shape on the smugglers market.

    • Jay says:

Yup, a big bet from LEGO which I’m hoping will pay off big time for them! Hopefully that’ll show them that there is demand for large non-modular playsets.

I literally squealed out loud when I saw the garage doors being used for the roof shape. So so cool.
