Weekend Wrap I

Hey everyone, hope you had a good weekend. I’m trialing out some new content on my blog, just random musings and short posts about any LEGO related activities or stuff that piques my interest. I’d like to give you guys a peek into life as an average but not so average AFOL.

Here’s what I was up to this weekend.

I'm Rick James Bricks Minifigure

I finally got around to opening up some mail around my house. Here’s an I’m Rick James Bricks minifig that I was gifted when I ordered my set of Series 14. It’s pretty cool and I’d love to get ones like these that I can give away.

The minifigure is a pretty great replica of Rick, the owner.

I'm Rick James Bricks Minifigure Back

It’s got a LEGO logo printed on the back as well.

Rick James Bricks Crocodiles

Did you know that apart from his store in Pakenham, he also sells LEGO parts and polybags online? A couple of weeks ago, I bought a dozen crocodiles off him on a whim, because eh – everyone needs some spare crocodiles lying around.

LEGO Containers

I didn’t build much this weekend but I was pretty pleased with myself for making some progress in parting out my LEGO sets. I spent too much time this weekend separating my parts into colours using these Sistema containers that I got when they were on special.

It’s a huge move for me as I’ve always kept sets in ziploc bags and have never “mixed up” all my LEGO. With space running out and the desire to start creating more original models, I decided this year that I would take the first step towards a more “sophisticated” organisation system.

I won’t lie, it was a lot of work and my back is aching from sitting on the floor separating out LEGO elements by colour. I won’t lie, it was pretty satisfying knowing that I’ve crossed the point of no return. It’s nowhere near as organised or impressive as more seasoned AFOLs, but it’s a pretty big move for me.

Staring at my quickly dwindling storage space, I realised that I had to stop hoarding my unbuilt sets and just harvest the ones that I will never realistically have time/space to build them into parts that I can use in future.

I also need more containers.

Complete Toys R Us Bricktober 2015 Sets

I also completed my Bricktober 2015 collection. It was a pretty expensive affair picking up the Bakery and Toys R Us Store… having to spend $100 on LEGO sets to qualify for the promotion. This weekend’s 20% off coupon kinda helped but I wasn’t really looking to spend money.

I am a compulsive collector, so I couldn’t resist and when I saw that the Bakery had sold out online, I quickly made my way to my nearest TRU store to get it before the price skyrockets.

If I’m not too busy with work this week, I hope to build them all together and maybe put together a quick review.

Have you bothered with this year’s Bricktober sets? I’ll share my thoughts about this promotion after it all ends but suffice to say, this entire fracas left a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

Piggy Guy Watering Succulent

Went to a wedding this weekend and got this adorable mini-succulent as a bomboniere. I knew I had to snap this photo as soon as I got home.

Oh and uh, you’re not really supposed to water succulents.

So yeah, that was my weekend! Not a lot of building, photographing or reviewing but I made plenty of progress sorting out my collection before it goes totally out of control.

How was your weekend? Did you get up to much, LEGO-wise?

I really enjoyed this post Jay. Thanks

I’ve been checking out the mocs over on eurobricks lately and I feel like I’m in the same situation as you, but i just can’t bear to mix all my pieces from my modular’s together!

How did you convince your brain to let you do it??

    Mike

Haha, it took a LOT of convincing. A few years actually but I highly recommend taking the plunge. It’s so worth it when you look at all your (hopefully) neatly organised parts and think – “oh yeah, I can build that cafe I was always thinking about. Minifigure vignettes? No problem.”

Also… I may have run out of storage space, so I needed to unbox a lot of sets I had bought for parts, heh.

I’m not really a fan of the micro scale for the Bricktober sets. I did manage to get the train station for free after picking up the newest wave of Mixels and the City Advent Calendar at TRU, but there’s no way I’d drop another $225 US to get the rest of the collection.

If they were vignettes in minifig scale, like the holiday themed sets (highly recommend the Halloween one from this year), I’d be sorely tempted to budget it out for the month. As it stands, I can take ’em or leave ’em, it just happened to coincide with a set of planned purchases.

Yeah, it’s not for everyone. I collected the whole series last year, so I felt that I needed this year to complete my collection. Doesn’t help that I’m a compulsive completionist….

Interesting to read what you have been up to Jay! 🙂 I have been getting out my old Castle sets recently, not the newer ones, but the 2007 ones. I also use my Harley Quinn figure, and give her a guy face, so I can have a jester! 😀 Also I might be able to make a Robin Hood when I get a green arrow fig for Christmas! 😀

    • Jay says:

Thanks! That’s really cool! What Castle sets do you have? I was away from LEGO in 2007 so I completely missed all the sets from that era. You building anything cool with them?

      • spudbud01 says:

I have the The Final Joust 7009, Crossbow Attack 7090, Knight’s Catapult Defense 7091, Skeleton’s Prison Carriage 7092, Skeleton Tower 7093, and (my personal favourite) King’s Castle Siege 7094. 🙂 I pretty much got all the 2007 sets except two. And I missed the best set (Dwarves’ Mine) which had a troll in it! :'( I haven’t built anything cool with them just yet, I am still sorting out all the minifigs as they are all so alike! XD

  4. I keep my lego in zip lock bags 😛 Never been to a wedding. This weekend I went to a wedding show/expo, the theatre and a restaurant set in an old bank. 🙂

    • Jay says:

I have to admit that I’ve spent so much on Ziploc bags. I really like the ones from Ikea! Sounds like you had a really exciting weekend! Which restaurant was that?
