Australian LEGO Release Dates – First Half of 2016 sets (January – May)

LEGO Australia Catalogue January to May 2016

Great news! The digital version of the new Australian LEGO catalogue featuring the local retail release dates for all the new 2016 LEGO sets which include new City, DC Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, Mixels and Star Wars among others.

You can currently view the new LEGO Brand catalogue online here and it will also be available to view via the LEGO 3D Catalogue app on your smart device once it gets updated accordingly.  iOS Android

Here’s the direct link to download the new 2016 LEGO Brand catalogue in a PDF format.

Most of the new sets featured in the catalogue are currently available for purchase on LEGO.com but LEGO Australia does have a silly practice of staggering the release dates for upcoming sets, unlike other territories which receive most of the new sets immediately.

This guide should help you make some key purchasing decisions and plan out your purchases for the next few months. There’s always the temptation to buy and enjoy the sets early from LEGO.com at full price rather than wait for them to get to retail where they will inevitably be discounted. As a blogger that enjoys reviewing new LEGO sets, it’s a big issue for me having to wait a few months for the sets to arrive at retail. Oh well.

The Australian catalogue does have some strange omissions, lacking about 30 – 40 pages compared to catalogues from other countries (eg. Germany). The new wave of Speed Champions sets featuring Audi, Ford and Chevrolet is also suspiciously missing. I’m seeking a comment from LEGO to clarify the availability of the new Speed Champions wave in Australia. I really hope we don’t get sidelined like we did last year with Ultra Agents.

LEGO Catalogue 2016 Speed Champions Ford, Chevrolet, Audi

Here’s the new 2016 Speed Champions sets from the European catalogue. The new range features Ford, Chevrolet and Audi. The North American release date is 1 March 2016.

UPDATE: So, LEGO Australia has gotten back to me and they weren’t able to confirm the 2016 Speed Champion sets availability, nor where they able to give an indication whether it would be released locally in the second half of the year. Some of my sources say that the sets will definitely make it to retail in the second half of the year, but nothing is set in stone at this point. Will they be available on LEGO.com? My educated guess is yet – they’ll become available online (as our store is tied with European stores) so you can order them if you’d like them early. Hugely disappointing, as the new sets feature Ford, which has a distinguished legacy in Australian motorsport and automotive history.

UPDATE 2: So it’s not official confirmation BUT… I’m confident that the 2016 Speed Champions sets will be released in Australia in June 2016.

Creator sets like Park Animals also seem to be missing from the catalogue even though they’re available for purchase online. Very strange indeed. (Update: A reader pointed out that Park Animals could be a Target Australia exclusive like Rainforest Animals was previously)

I’ve also noticed that plenty of older 2015 sets from various themes do not feature in the Australian catalogue whereas catalogues from other countries still feature sets from the second half of 2015.

Anyway, here’s the release schedule for all the sets and themes that are coming our way in the next few months! To make it easier, you can click on each theme here and it will send you straight to their respective sections along with details on set pricing and LEGO.com links if you’re keen on purchasing them straight away.

And that’s it for all the new sets and their Australian retail release dates! This should help you plan your purchases throughout the first half of 2016 and budget accordingly. Personally, I think City is a bit drab this year, other than the cool Prison Island set. I’m most excited about new LEGO Friends, Elves and Ninjago. The Ninjago Sky Pirates theme is too cool to pass up, and I’m pretty glad that we’re getting them early too!

There seems to be a lot less Marvel and DC Super Heroes sets this year, which is quite odd seeing as how the theme usually sells quite well. Plenty of Star Wars, which should be expected. Australian LEGO Star Wars fans should have plenty to celebrate since we’re getting them in January, so it’s only a matter of weeks before we start seeing the rest of the new sets on the shelves.

I’m still umming and ahhing over NEXO Knights. I might try a few sets out to review but so far, they haven’t quite grabbed my attention yet. Seems like a more boring Chima (I am one of the 3 people who likes Chima).

So what do you think of the early 2016 lineup of sets? Let me know in the comments section!

What about the angry birds movie sets?

    • Jay says:

Ah they’re out already! I think the reason why they didn’t include it in the catalogue was to keep it under wraps. They should be out in all stores

  2. Ben says:

Any word on the Australian release date of the new Lego Star Wars Summer 2016 sets announced last month at the New York Toys Fair? Some including, Captain Rex’s AT-TE, Vader’s Advanced Tie vs A-Wing, The Freemaker and the remake of the Clone Turbo Tank? Thanks!

    • Jay says:

Hey Ben, no news yet on Summer 2016 sets. Based on last year’s timing, I think we’ll start finding out the release windows around June!

  3. Steve says:

Any word on an Australian release on Star Wars Polybags?

  4. Dlim says:

No Architecture sets in te catalogue either. Shame as I was looking forward to their new Skylines subtheme…..

    • Jay says:

Architecture should arrive in the usual haunts (Myer, David Jones, Toyworld). The retail catalogue only includes sets that are available everywhere – which is why exclusives like The Brick Bank or Ghostbusters HQ don’t get featured. Hope that helps!

  5. abe francis says:

The catalogue is just plain weird. One page of speed champions consisting of only about half the sets currently out? It’s like they just included every second page of the full catalogue.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, it’s very sparse. I have my suspicions that LEGO might be thinning their retail selection here in Australia to just focus on the newer sets. That’s just a gut feeling, though.

  6. Jaclyn Ngan says:

Oh man, I really want that Black Panther Pursuit set. A non-exclusive set at long last that has Captain America unmasked and even Bucky himself!

  7. Dean says:

The speed champions sets will be released is australia in June.

    • Jay says:

Interesting, you’re not the first with the news on that. Thanks for letting me know. I’m awaiting an official response from LEGO before I add in any updated information.

  8. Keaton says:

    That giant Ant-Man is awesome!

  9. starwarsfolder12 (OH JUST GUESS WHAT GOES HERE) says:

Sorry bout my name, tired of writing mobile every time. I actually also like Chima. I never got a set, but I did see the tv show, and it was nice. Also while I was in Gander (where we had to fly to Ottawa) a few days ago, I found Clash of the Heroes, so of course I picked it up. It’s nice.

Also, Jay, for gods sake, review just one BIONICLE set. That’s all I ask. Any one you want. You don’t have to review more after that. Plus I think I can help.

  10. Michael says:

Ahh makes me cranky – spend heaps now, or wait a few months. I like the look of the King’s Mech, along with the cheap Batman v Superman set – $20 for Batman and Superman minifigures

    • Jay says:

I’m still undecided on Nexo Knights – I’ll pick a few random ones to see how I feel and yeah, the King’s Mech is a must buy. I’m going to try my best to wait it out to get them in sale.

  11. John Boxall says:

City is very disappointing. They could at least add a hospital or ambulance station to balance out the burgeoning police state and countless fire brigade sets. And… where are the trains? We need more trains!

    • Jay says:

I 100% agree. None of the new City sets appeal to me at all. Maybe the second half sets will be much better. Hopefully they’ll be in the same vein as the Deep Sea Explorers/Space or Arctic Explorers sets.

  12. Andrea says:

My kids are going to have a field day, particularly my daughter – friends camping sets, cute animals with parties and of course elves dragons. I think the boys will like the superhero micros…and not too expensive. Me, I like the next minifigure set, I want a skunk!

    • Jay says:

I agree! I’m equally excited by all the sets you mentioned. The Superhero Micros should sell really well. Cheap way to complete your superhero minifig collection.

  13. Richie says:

Nice write up Jay. Good stuff. Interesting to note about the 2nd half SW sets not even featuring in the catalogue. You would think that since the release of TFA they would pump it as hard as they can. Perhaps they’ve sold everything that produced and don’t plan to make more…?
