Who you gonna call? LEGO unveils new 75828 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & 2

LEGO 75828 Ghostbusters Movie Ecto 1 & 2

Early this morning, LEGO’s Facebook page gave us the first official look at 75828 Ecto-1&2, the brand new Ghostbusters set that ties in with the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters movie. There has been plenty of rumours floating around of the new Ecto-1 so it’s great that we finally have a comprehensive look at the set.

The revised version of the iconic Ghostbusters vehicle also comes with the entire main cast of the new Ghostbusters movie that will be in cinemas in July 2016. The set features a massive lineup of minifigures, which includes the four new female Ghostbusters, a demonic-looking Imp as well as Kevin, the new Ghostbusters receptionist.

I’m personally very happy about getting a minifigure version of Kristen Wiig who plays Erin Gilbert, a professor at Columbia University. I loved Melissa McCarthy in last year’s Spy which was an excellent comedic romp – she plays Abby Yates, a published author and paranormal expert. Rounding up the cast are Leslie Jones who plays an NYC Subway Worker, Patty Tolan and Kate McKinnon who plays Jillian Holtzmann, a nuclear engineer.

Surprisingly, we also get Kevin, the Ghostbusters’ receptionist who is played by Hollywood hunk Chris Hemsworth. This will be Chris Hemworth’s second outing as a minifigure after Thor.

The minifigures all look to have some brilliant printing and details, and I’m absolutely loving the new hairpieces.

The revised Ecto-1 has one major improvement over its LEGO Ideas predecessor, namely that it comfortably fits all four Ghostbusters in the vehicle! The vehicle looks good from the official photos, it still retains the Hearse-like shape and has some new design features such as the strip along the side, those sweet-looking red rims and a bundle of paranormal-detecting instruments on the roof.

Here’s the movie version of Ecto-1. I’d say the LEGO designers have done a pretty great job replicating the overall design!

The set also comes with Ecto-2, a white motorbike driven by Kevin,

I remain optimistically cautious about the movie, I’m still unsure if they can do the franchise justice but I’ll reserve judgement till its out in the cinemas. I don’t believe a trailer has been released for the movie yet, so I hope that they pull it off and keep all the campy elements that made the original movies such pop culture icons.

LEGO 75828 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & 2 will retail in the US for $59.99. There’s no Australian price or solid release dates yet, but I can imagine that we’re looking at a Summer release, timed to coincide with the movie which is released worldwide in July 2016. Australian LEGO retailer I’m Rick James Bricks has this pegged for a July 2016 retail release as well, although I fully expect it to be first available online.

I’m quite optimistic about the new LEGO Ecto-1&2. I reviewed the original LEGO Ideas Ecto-1 and still think that it’s one of the best mid-sized LEGO sets in recent years. There’s plenty to live up to, but if the movie proves to be a smash hit, I can absolutely see this set being popular among LEGO fans as well.

So what do you think about the new LEGO Ecto-1 & 2? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section!

Awesome review, Jay. I’ve never seen the movie, and probably never plan to, but based on pictures I’ve seen, Mayhem manifests in a green color. Is this true? I’ve never gotten a Lego Ecto-1, but am a total Ghostbusters nerd, so I might try and get this. I looked at the 2020 Ecto-1 and was so disappointed that it wasn’t minifigure scale. Someone at Lego HQ should shape up and create a minifig sized one, even though the snippets of characters might be hard to turn into minifigures. I think I’ll aim for the Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ before anything else. By the way, Jay, do you know if the 1984-1989 Lego Ecto-1 fits in the firehouse? It would look stunning to recreate the scene where Ecto rolls out of the garage on the way to the Sedgewick.

I’ve actually not watched the female Ghostbusters movie too, so we’re in the same boat!

No it doesn’t fit in the Firehouse unfortunately! I don’t own the Firehouse as well, so I don’t know!

Watched the movie today it was frickin’ awesome. Wasn’t impressed by the original, wasn’t into Ghostbusters at all but I love Melissa M so a bunch of us went to see it today. The acting is superlative, the humour is well timed and hilarious and best thing of all was the number of dads that turned up with their kids in tow. Will be buying this set because of that, and found your site because you made this post. Drop me a line when it’s in stock. I need a couple. All my nieces and nephews are clamouring for one.

Ah that’s great to hear. I was extremely apprehensive about all the unwarranted criticism of a movie that wasn’t even out yet but I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

Cool, yeah, will definitely let you know when it shows up in stores! Hoping to receive my set soon so I can review it!

The minifigs are amazing. TLG have given them the full premium treatment and those new hairpiece molds…wow. It looks like the ghostbusters symbol car door is a printed piece, which makes it even more inexplicable why they used a sticker for the sign out the front of Ghostbusters HQ, a $500 set. Let’s just hope the movie doesn’t suck and make the set “less desirable”.
