Upcoming LEGO polybags promos for Australia – Classic Mr Freeze and Easter Minifigure (5004468)

LEGO Batman Mr Freeze

UPDATE: Good news! For those of you waiting on the Batman Classic TV Series Mr Freeze polybag, the promotion is now live on the Australian LEGO.com store! To qualify for the free polybag, you’ll have to purchase over $100 worth of LEGO products in your cart. The threshold is a little high, but the good news is that you can buy LEGO from any theme to qualify – not just DC Super Heroes products.

It’s a great time to pick up some of the new Angry Birds sets or maybe Speed Champions or you could of course splash out on the Classic TV Series Batcave.

The LEGO Mr Freeze Polybag promotion will run from 1 – 30 April 2016 or while stocks last.

UPDATE: In a surprise turn of events, the Chicken Suit Guy is now available at selected Toyworlds in Australia as part of an Easter promotion. Check out the March 2016 sales post for more details.

UPDATE: The Chicken Suit Guy promo is now LIVE on LEGO.com! The Iconic Easter Minifigure Set 5004468 will show up in your cart with purchases of AU$40 or more.

While you may be excited and all, I’d recommend waiting till the 7th as it’s widely expected that there’ll be Double VIP points from 7 – 22 March.

Enjoy!

LEGO UK Store Calendar March-April 2016

The UK LEGO Store newsletter for March/April 2016 was recently released online (download it directly here) which gives us a peek into upcoming exclusive LEGO promotions. The news is relevant to Australia as our LEGO.com promos are usually synced up with that of the UK (and EU) which means I’m pretty confident that the same promos will apply to us too.

I’m about… 90% sure.

Because we don’t have official LEGO stores here in Australia, LEGO.com is the only way we get access to exclusive promotional polybags (like the Winter Soldier or Martian Manhunter). The lack of any sort of store calendar can sometimes make it tricky to know about upcoming polybags but I’ve been using the UK store calendar for some months and it’s proven to be quite prescient most of the time.

The last thing you’ll want is to make a order on LEGO.com and discover next week that if you had waited a few days, your order would’ve qualified for a sweet new polybag.
LEGO Mr Freeze Polybag Promo April 2016

The biggest news in the UK store calendar is the confirmation of the LEGO 30603 Classic Mr Freeze polybag. The exclusive minifigure is designed to complement the Classic TV Series Batcave in all its retro glory.

Here’s a closer look at the polybag via Bricktoynews. You can check out their post for more pictures of the polybag.

In the UK, the polybag will be available for free with any LEGO DC Super Heroes purchases over £50 from 1 – 30 April 2016. I expect the same will apply here in Australia with a $50 or $75 (I hope its the former) threshold.

Again, no idea why they didn’t launch this to incentivise people to buy the Classiv TV Series Batcave

LEGO Easter Minifigure 5004468 Promo Teaser

Another interesting discovery is the March/Easter promo – an Iconic Easter Minifigure (set number 5004468) with any purchase over £15. This promotion runs from 1 – 31 March 2016.

Details are pretty scant on this but they’ve teased Series 9’s Chicken Suit Guy in the newsletter. Now I doubt that they’ll re-release the Chicken Suit Minifigure, but LEGO have done stranger things.

LEGO 5004468 Iconic Easter Minifigure - Chicken Suit Guy

UPDATE: So I was really, really wrong about it not being a Chicken Suit Minifigure. Toys R Us (the US one) has revealed the Iconic Easter Minifigure is none other than the Chicken Suit Guy from Series 9, just with a cardboard henhouse box. I’m guessing it’s meant to be a place to hide Easter Eggs?

via Brickpicker

Anyway… this is HUGE and sets quite a huge precedent – that LEGO is able (and seemingly more than willing) to re-release rare and extremely sought after minifigures in promotional polybags. Chicken Suit Guy is currently averaging AU$45 on Bricklink. Expect this to plummet (yay).

For minifigure investors/collectors – this means bad news as literally anything could be next. Bunny Suit Guy? Bumblebee Girl? Series 1 Zombie? Nothing is safe!

These are going to be interesting times. I for one fully welcome this decision by LEGO to flood and reintroduce rare minifigs to the market so fans (especially those who missed out) don’t have to cough up obscene prices on the aftermarket.

Another likely possibility is the Bunny Suit Guy minifigure but again, I highly doubt that LEGO would rerelease Collectible Minifigures in polybags. Maybe a variant of some sort?

LEGO 75821 Angry Birds - Piggy Car Escape

Whatever it is, I hope the Iconic Easter Minifigure comes with one of those new Egg accessories found in the Angry Birds sets.

Anyway, it looks like an exciting two months ahead. Hopefully this will help you plan your purchases from LEGO.com in advance to qualify for these minifigures. Unless you really need the Classic TV Series Batcave right now, it might be worth waiting till April to easily qualify for the Mr Freeze polybag. And hey, there might be double VIP points promos as well, but those just seem to pop up randomly – although I’m expecting one around Easter.

I have to mention that these aren’t 100% confirmed for the Australian LEGO.com store, but I’m pretty confident since it’s in the UK and EU Store calendars.

March should see the new LEGO Elves, Minecraft and Mighty Micro sets go live, so there’ll be plenty of new sets to qualify for these promotional polybags.

Hope this helps!

Wow thanks for this great news! I have been wanting to buy the Chicken Suit Guy but the prices in the secondary market are crazy. I just dislike (who doesn’t haha) the fact that if I were to just buy up to AUD40 to qualify for this promo, the shipping cost is so expensive. That aside, how is your experience with purchasing from the Lego online store? Were the packages dented/creased? I’ve read horror stories on boxes getting crushed etc. :/

    • apricots says:

I’m so put off by the shipping. $30! I was going to buy one of the mini christmas sets but couldn’t stomach paying more for shipping than for the item.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, unfortunately it’s really only worth it to buy stuff from LEGO.com if you order more than $200 to get free shipping.

So far, I’ve had a great experience with LEGO.com. Most boxes arrive in great shape. My largest order was the SHIELD Helicarrier and it arrived perfectly.

The only set I had issues with was Big Bang Theory, which was crushed slightly. I had to return it but got sent a new one.

  2. Mike says:

So far no sign of the Chicken Suit Guy in Canada at Toys R Us or as a Lego promo. Fingers crossed!

  3. Adele says:

I have absolutely NO problem with them re-releasing the Zombie from series one of minifigures because I never got him! haha

  4. Tachi says:

Great news! Love Legos’ minifigs and can’t wait to add this one to my collection!

  5. Daniel says:

This is awesome news! Always wanted the chicken suit guy, and been toying with the idea of biting the bullet and paying $50 for him at Toy Corner. Was planning on ordering the Millennium Falcon this week from the Lego site, guess I’ll hold off a week and get a nice little bonus!

    • Jay says:

Hold off till the 7th of March if possible! Word on the grapevine is that there’ll be Double VIP points on LEGO.com from 7-22 March!

      • Daniel says:

Ahh cool, I’ll do that for sure! Just had a look at the Lego store this morning, and the Chicken minifig has indeed shown up as the free promo in my basket. Awesome!

        • Jay says:

Yup, all the new sets are almost there too! New Speed Champions, Elves, Civil War (some sets are missing) and Angry Birds. Don’t forget the [Seasonal Easter Chick](shop.lego.com/en-AU/Easter-Chick-40202)!

  6. Mark says:

The issue of Lego re-releasing ‘collectible’ minifigures, or sets, is a vexed one. Whilst I appreciate that it gives those who missed out the first time it also devalues Lego as “collectible” per se. As you said “what next”…it opens the floodgates. As much as I loathe the practice of people buying Lego purely for the purpose of selling for profit the Lego group surely understand that it also adds perceived value to the brand. I don’t think it’s any conincidence that that the practice of Lego investing has mirrored the exponential growth in TLGs profits; its a symbiotic relationship. Can you imagine if they re-release the Holy grail of collectors; the UCS Millennium Falcon? I suspect Lego as an investment would falter. Would demand (i.e. sales) fall significantly? Probably not straight away. But I think eventually it might affect the sales of AFOL oriented themes, and I for one don’t want that to happen!

    • Jay says:

Gotta disagree with you there. LEGO’s status as a “collectible” is one that’s mostly bestowed by (adult) fans. The only line that’s truly for Collectors is the Star Wars UCS series – it’s right there in the name.

The Minifigures Series has never been designated as “Collectible”, which is why I’ve never referred to them as CMF.

This is a fantastic move by LEGO and I’d love to see more of this. While I doubt they will ever re-release the UCS Falcon, I wouldn’t put it past them to release an updated version (TFA perhaps?).

You have to understand that LEGO doesn’t gain anything from the secondhand market and I’m guessing that they loath it. Look at some of their recent moves (5 Shark Suit Guys, Hot Dog Suit reissue in Friends), and you can see that they’re taking proactive steps against people stockpiling “coveted elements or characters”. It’s a delicate balance, but so far, I think they’ve been doing a commendable job of adapting to current trends.

I do agree with you that it does add some perceived value to the brand (to adults) but LEGO is and will always be a toy company and they don’t need to pander to adults. Their brand value being rooted in being one of the best toys for children is exactly why they’re in a position of success after all these years – because they’ve never wavered from it, and they shouldn’t. That said, we’re actually incredibly lucky that in recent years, LEGO has done so much for Adult fans by releasing sets like the GBHQ, Classic Batcave, Exo Suit.

      • Mark says:

Hmm. Do you really believe that SW UCS is the only Lego line marketed by TLG as collectible? Blind bag mini figures actually have the words “collect all 16” printed on the bag. TLG also quickly realized the mini figures could be identified by the barcode hence we now have non-unique barcodes and the creepy practice of bag-feeling by mostly adults from what I’ve witnessed.

UCS sets also exist in in DC Comics and Marvel themes. But even SW UCS collectors can’t agree on what constitutes a UCS set! TLG have tried to address this by stating that all future UCS sets (Sandcrawler onwards) will bear the UCS logo. However, I think even you will agree the upcoming Assault on Hoth set has muddied those waters! If that’s not a kids set dressed in a very expensive collectibe suit then I don’t know what is.

Creator modulars are also another good example of TLG not “pandering” but listening to the desires of AFOLs and TFOLs to create a line of very successful collectible sets. Don’t forget this evolved from a survey marketed to the AFOL community, not kids.

Of course the brand value of Lego comes from its roots as a basic building toy for kids. But a lot of the recent success of Lego has come from licensing and expanding into new media…movies, games, mini-movie tie-ins, etc. Lets not forget that TLG was on the brink of collapse in the 1990’s, partly due to bad business practices but also attributed to the rapid rise in video games. New management and a licensing deal with Lusasfilm and the rest, as they say, is history. If you’ve ever played a Lego video game or Dimensions I don’t think you can deny they contain humorous content and in-gags that are specifically designed for adults. And that’s where they are smart. Yes, its primarily a kids “toy’ but it also appeals to adults. Same with the rise in adult oriented sets such as the GBHQ, Classsic Batcave and Exo suit you mention. That’s not by “luck” that we are seeing more of these sets, its good business practice. If adults think Lego is cool, then they are more likely to buy sets for their kids too…I know I do, much to the chagrin of my significant other!

        • Jay says:

I see your point. To add to that, I also think that sets like Mixels and Microfighters could potentially fall under that umbrella too.

With UCS sets, now that LEGO has introduced the new UCS logo, I think it’s clearer what LEGO defines as a UCS set… but whether or not fans see it that way is another thing. I really don’t think Star Wars fans will ever come to accept Assault on Hoth as a UCS set. Ugh. It just makes me sad every time I think of it.

Speaking of adults, a long time ago LEGO estimated that the AFOL market was about…5 – 10% of their business, which is quite significant. They haven’t said anything recently, but I can definitely see that number increasing slightly.

Interesting to hear from your perspective that you’re more likely to buy sets for your kids if you think LEGO is cool! I’ve read that it’s usually the other way around – adults getting into LEGO after buying sets for their kids!

  7. The Mountebank says:

That henhouse looks more like an outhouse…

  8. Warmongurl says:

So glad to hear about the Chicken Suit Guy minifigure!! I only recently started collecting selective Series minifigures. Shark guy is awesome so I got interested in other animal minifigures, but the price immediately turned me off.

  9. Sarah says:

So to make sure I’m understanding everything – the Chicken Suit Guy is going to be sold at TRU (and just TRU) in the US in March ? Thanks for the scoop ! 🙂

    • Jay says:

It looks like it. For other territories (UK/EU/most likely AU), it’s going to be a month-long promo, so you can get it at your local LEGO store or LEGO.com

  10. nick says:

When I was traipsing throughout North America and popping into as many Lego Stores as possible, inevitably my Australian nationality popped up (the accent everyone seems to love) and no one believed we have ZERO Lego stores in Australia. It beggars belief. I’m sick of being faced with FREE POSTAGE! *with orders over a gazillion dollars.
It’s such bs. I often don’t want to spend that much in any one hit and it’s just so dumb that we don’t have one in at least Melbourne and Sydney. Come on.

So while this is informative news, it’s just enraged me over our lack of Lego Stores.. Again.

    Nick

    • Jay says:

Totally know what you mean. It’s just so nice walking into a LEGO store and knowing that you can pick up almost any set that’s current available. I just feel that Australia being such a saturated market isn’t that big of a priority for LEGO at this moment. Then again, I’m quite happy with getting regular discounts on exclusives at Myer, Target and David Jones. Most people speculate that if LEGO were to introduce official stores here, it would mark the end of exclusives at other stores.

Maybe things will change when the Legoland Discovery Centre opens up next year. We’ll just have to see.

  11. Adele says:

Alright! Thanks for that update, Jay.

    • Jay says:

Psst, word on the grapevine is that Double VIP will be from 7 – 22 March! Seems like the perfect time to pick up your Batcave and score a Chicken Suit Guy too!

  12. please, mr freeze, come to canada.

  13. Duncan says:

    Chicken Dude, really?
The Mr. Freeze polybag seems cool though.
