Official reveal of LEGO Series 16 Minifigures

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 - Lineup

Update: Be sure to check out my review of LEGO Minifigures Series 16! This is LEGO’s best Series yet and I thoroughly enjoyed every single character in Series 16!

This is super delayed, but a couple of days ago LEGO officially announced and revealed LEGO Minifigures Series 16 on their Facebook page – which is kinda weird as Series 16 has somehow gone on sale (thanks to everyone that wrote in!) in the United States. I believe they were available at official LEGO stores, Walmart and Toys R Us.

It’s odd because the official global release date for Series 16 is 1 September 2016 (even LEGO’s Facebook says “Coming Soon”). Anyway, as an Online Recognised LUG, I couldn’t really write about it till it’s officially announced by LEGO – so here it is!

After a short foray into German Footballers and the excellent Disney Series, I’m pretty glad that we’re back to the core minifigures series – with wacky characters, costumes and personalities that has made the Minifigure Series one of LEGO’s most beloved themes.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Character Names

I’ve put together an easy to refer image featuring the all the Series 16 characters and their official names as an easy point of reference.

According to The Brick Fan, the box breakdown of Series 16 is as follows:

Banana Guy x 5
Desert Warrior x 5
Spy x 5
Mariachi x 4
Cute Little Devil x 4
Hiker x 4
Rogue x 4
Dog Show Winner x 4
Spooky Boy x 4
Babysitter x 3
Scallywag Pirate x 3
Cyborg x 3
Ice Queen x 3
Penguin Boy x 3
Kickboxer x 3
Wildlife Photographer x 3

This means that there are 3 guaranteed sets in each box. The breakdown is pretty great, I’m quite happy that Banana Guy and Desert Warriors are included in large numbers, although it seems like we’re back to boxing off the Animal Suit Costume Minifigures as the “rare” minifig of the series, with only 3 per box.

I’m personally very excited for Series 16 and cannot wait to get my hands on them. I’m patiently waiting on my review copy and I’ll definitely review them as soon as I get my hands on them. It seems like LEGO have yet another outstanding series with really memorable characters.

For army builders like me, I’m looking forward to collecting as many Banana Guys, Penguin Boys, Desert Warriors and Rogues, and maybe an army of babies from the Babysitters because why the heck not!

Check out the photos below for a closer look at each Series 16 minifigure!

Hope you’re as excited for these as I am – tell me in the comments which ones are you looking forward to the most. Or if you’re lucky enough to be in the United States and got your hands on some, let me now which are your favourites!

Fyi, I found my second ever Lego quality control issue in this series. My mariachi guy’s hat wouldn’t snap on due to the inside looking melted or like the mold didn’t completely fill. This was after a Disney series Syndrome who had two blueprint tiles but no legs. And customer service can’t provide replacement parts unique to blind bag minifigs. What’s up, Lego?

    • Matt Merrill says:

Update…now I got a Scalawag Pirate who had a cracked and bent knotted end of his bandana, I’m hoping this time it was just due to some overzealous squeezing of bags by other Lego hunters and not an actual quality issue.

    • Jay says:

Oh interesting. With customer service, wouldn’t they offer to send you a new blind bag? I’ve personally never had a defective Series Minifigure but have heard plenty of stories of missing or warped minifigs.

Their margin of errors are probably tiny, but I guess with them producing so much more product, it then increases the likelihood of more defective products getting out.

Also, the minifig series are made in China… Which some people have speculated to be the cause of so many errors/defects.

  2. Rick of I’m Rick James Bricks here. August stuff is not due to mid month

  3. Mike says:

The local Lego store told me that series 16 was being released early to make up for the shortage of the Disney series. (But I’ve also heard that the Disney shortage may be to ensure a supply in September when the Disney castle comes out…)

I managed to find a complete set at the local Lego store last week. Overall I thought they were one of the easier feels in recent series. The only one I wasn’t sure of was the kickboxer because I thought the gloves would be separate pieces rather than permanently attached to her hands.

    • Jay says:

Ah… Interesting! The regular series minifigs are definitely a lot easier to feel for since they have a lot more distinctive accessories.

  4. Michael says:

Has anyone seen any of the August sets turn up in stores yet?

  5. Matt says:

Looking forward to these coming to the UK, especially penguin boy and banana guy!

  6. Lego Girl says:

Thanks, Jay. Cant wait for them to be released in Czech republic 🙂

  7. Steve says:

Have these shown up in Australia at retail yet???

  8. Warmongurl says:

I’m most excited for the wildlife photographer, penguin boy, banana suit guy, and hiker; though I think the entire series is outstanding! I’m definitely getting multiples of the wildlife photographer so that I can build a penguin flock for my arctic display.

    • Jay says:

I already have quite a large Penguin colony (from the Friends sets) but I’m definitely going to add more Penguins! The Penguin Suit Guys can also join the colony!

  9. Matt Merrill says:

The kickboxer is my favorite in this series I think. Not only is the helmet + hairpiece unexpectedly cool but her colorful outfit and gloves make her look really cool, and the expression on her face is great, the photos don’t quite capture it.

The hiker has a double sided head with an alternate worried expression. It’s kind of funny because his hair doesn’t quite hide all the stubble in back of whichever face you’re not displaying.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, Kickboxer looks really cool. I do wish we got her in blue instead of red so that she can spar with Series 5’s Boxer. The Team GB one doesn’t count just because it’s so rare!

  10. Duncan says:

I wanna get the Baby and the Terrier,They are pretty cool. They also come with Minifigures to add. It is a sad thing when I want the small accessories rather than the figure.

I am glad there is an affordable way to get the Baby figure.

  11. Michael says:

Thanks Jay! Any news on a Rick James special?

  12. Jaclyn Ngan says:

Hiker and Spy look really cool to me! Spooky Boy looks like he could fit in an Addams Family themed MOC or something lol.

  13. Shea says:

That Rouge minifigure has got to be one of the best so far! I hope I have enough money to get a nice handful of them!

    • Jay says:

Agreed! I also really love the Desert Warrior. This is such a great series for army building – I’m going to spend a fortune on Series 16

  14. Hillary Bliss says:

We happened upon them early in the morning after our Target put them out and spent about 35 minutes feeling for all of them. The kickboxer is really neat because she comes with an additional helmet and holder that isn’t pictured. The ice queen is super, super impressive with the holographic cape. The wildlife photographer is also really cool, coming with the little penguin.

We picked up 2 banana guys and went back for a 3rd later in the day and they were all gone!

    • Jay says:

Oh cool! They’re still not out in Australia yet. We only get them in September!

This looks like it’s the best series so far!

      • Greg says:

Hi Jay, I’m new to collecting minifigures and I’m located in Sydney. I want to start my collection with series 16. Any idea of when exactly this will be available, estimated price and also in which retailers I’ll be able to find them?

        Cheers!

        • Jay says:

Hey Greg, Australian retailers are due to get them sometime in September! They should be available everywhere that sells LEGO like Myer, David Jones, Toyworld, Kmart, Big W etc. They should cost $5 as usual per blind bag.

Are you after a whole set or just random minifigs? If you are, check out http://www.imrickjamesbricks.com.au He will typically sell complete sets on his site. I’ll be putting up a special offer closer to the release date, so look out for it soon!

  15. I had to go three stores (I live in the US) but I was able to put together the full set. The babysitter was the hardest figure to find – the first two stores were wiped clean of them before I got there. I hope to put a review of the entire set up on my blog within a few days as well.

    • Matt Merrill says:

Nice! I imagine a lot of folks will be after that rare Lego baby, when I first saw the boxes at my store and noticed they’d been picked through, I immediately suspected that would be a hard one to find. Oddly, both suit guys were still available at both stores, banana guy in particular in great abundance.

      • Jay says:

People have been buying loads of LEGO babies through Bricks and Pieces. With Banana Guy, he should be pretty numerous since there are 5 of him. Yet another great move by LEGO!

  16. Matt Merrill says:

Great post! I just found out also that the release date wasn’t supposed to be for a while yet. The two stores where I found them were picked clean of babysitters, and I have yet to come across a trick or treater or cyborg yet. I’m happy to say though that this series is one of the easier ones to feel for, almost every character has really identifiable features. So far I bought:

    – Hiker
    – Kickboxer
    – Penguin Boy
    – Banana Guy
    – Mariachi
    – Ice Queen

The hiker, banana guy and oddly, penguin boy seemed most abundant at the two stores I went to. I don’t collect much Lego City theme but the hiker is cool and seems like a great value accessory wise.

  17. A wild Series 16 appeared! Do you catch ’em all?
