The 4,002 piece LEGO 10255 Assembly Square is a 10 year celebration of modular buildings

The LEGO Modular Buildings theme is undoubtedly the hallmark of adult LEGO fans. It’s a really unique LEGO theme that appeals primarily to adult fans, who are keen to savour expert building techniques, and the large scale of the modular buildings make them excellent display pieces.

To commemorate 10 years of modular buildings, LEGO have announced 10255 Assembly Square, a 4,002 piece behemoth that features a wealth of unsurpassed, intricate details and hidden surprises. This is LEGO’s largest modular building yet, and is a very fitting celebration of a modular decade.

The Assembly Square is a dense cluster of buildings, featuring plenty of commercial shops and a buzzing sidewalk. The Assembly Square’s ground level houses a bakery, florist’s shop and café. The first floor of the building  boasts a a music store, photo studio and dental office, and an upper-level dance studio and apartment with access to a rooftop terrace with barbecue.

On the outside, the Assembly Square has a detailed sidewalk with outdoor café furniture, fountain, streetlamps and a highly elaborate facade with beautifully detailed windows and doors, three buildable shop signs, spired tower and a decorative roofline.

For a 4,002 piece set, the Assembly Square’s price is pretty damn reasonable, costing US$279.99, CA $329.99 and UK £169.99. The Assembly Square’s release date is 1 January 2017 and will be available online and in LEGO stores. No Australian price or retail release details yet. There is no VIP release for this set.

Update:  LEGO 10255 Assembly Square will be priced at AU$399.99 in Australia!

The Assembly Square comes with 8 minifigures –  a dentist, barista, baker, florist, music store assistant, dancer, photographer and a LEGO® fan, plus a baby figure. The minifigure selection is quite awesome, and I’m especially excited about the dentist minifig – the first of its kind! My wife is a dentist, so I expect that this is going to be a very popular minifig in my home.

And yes, that is a printed tile meant to be a LEGO Cafe Corner, the very first set that started it all!

As an ode to 10 years of Modular Buildings, LEGO Designer Jamie Berard and his team have crammed a dizzying number of references to past Modular Buildings. See if you can spot them all without consulting the list below.

One of the coolest thing about the Assembly Square is that it houses a huge LEGO enthusiast, who has a massive LEGO display across her apartment, including micro versions of modular buildings and an Eiffel Tower. What a lovely ode to LEGO fans.

The Assembly Square measures over 13” (35cm) high, 14” (38cm) wide and 9” (25cm) deep and will integrate well with your existing Modular Buildings.

I’m personally, really, really excited about the Assembly Square. You can tell that so much love and attention has been poured into this set, and you can just feel that LEGO and the Creator design team have made this an absolute labour of love for LEGO and Modular fans to enjoy.

I’m having a real problem mounting the Café Corner sign. I’ve rebuilt the door assembly (sides and bricks over top of door) twice but sign mounting still hits top of first floor trim causing it to tilt forward. All assembly photos show it hanging absolutely vertical over the door. Any suggestions?

    • Patricia Fritsky says:

I was having same problem. Make sure the circular light grey piece that fits into the square fan piece is extending one circle out beyond the black corner piece.

  2. JaysBrickBlogFan says:

I believe that the hair on the minifigure with the red shirt has only been used in one other set. Do you know what it is?

  3. K says:

When is this being released in aus? I desperately need to buy this along qithysome super hard to find modulars!!

  4. Dion says:

    Excellent Review.

Kinda sorry I discovered “Asembly Square” about 20 minutes after ordering “Big Ben”: but, after anguishing over not having the Town Hall, the Fire Station & the”Grand Emporium” for so long (they’re out of my price range now) I’ll be in there for this one: even if I do have to explain to my family why I’m blowing all their Inheritance on Lego. Only joking: if I was blowing all their Inheritance, I’d have Cafe Corner and another couple of missing “Modulars” as well.

My observation is you need to get in early: I’ve got things sitting in boxes bought for the kids, that have basically doubled in value (well, allright, in Market Price).

Lego does a brilliant job of weaving stories/ references into these sets: I’m impressed.

    • Jay says:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I do think that with Modulars there’s still plenty of time to wait since they have fairly long lives. The Pet Shop for example, is still going strong. The only anomaly was the Town Hall which retired out of the blue and caused it to spike in price.

But LEGO seems to be doing a good job keeping supply of these sets up, given its their premier AFOL theme.

  5. Mark says:

Just a thought but maybe we should all stop saying what amazing value it is. TLG pay attention to forums and it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve readjusted the price on an individual set post release ?

    • Jay says:

Haha! Well, LEGO have to win back a lot of their fans for Assault on Hoth. Creator is their darling and crown – I doubt they’ll readjust the price, heh.

  6. Sean says:

    Great review.

You’ll have to give me a buzz when this comes out. 🙂

  7. Andy says:

It’s probably just me, but does anyone else think that the photographer minifig looks a lot like one of the guys from the show “myth busters” put a stick of dynamite in his hands, and he’s a dead ringer.

    • Jay says:

That’s the first thing I noticed too! Definitely a nod to Jamie! Maybe it was done on purpose, since Jamie Berard shares the same first name 😉

  8. Hayley says:

    I also noticed the following:
    – the cash register in the bakery is a reference to the very similar cash register in Pet Shop
    – the female barista in this set is probably meant to be the same person (the shopper lady) from Grand Emporium, judging by her hair
    – the baker in this set is probably the same chef from Parisian Restaurant
    – the floor in the flower shop is a reference to floor of the laundromat (next to Brick Bank)
    – the phone in the dentist’s office is a reference to the almost identical phone in Pet Shop
    – the picture on the dentist office’s wall is a reference to Town Hall (identical picture)

    • Jay says:

Oooh cool! I can’t wait to get this set in my hands. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are many more references and Easter Eggs in the square just waiting to be discovered

  9. Michael says:

PS I love the 48×32 baseplate idea. I have a 16×32 modular Kwik-e-mart MOC, so this even my block up!

    • Jay says:

I’ve seen some fans complain about the different layout and how it’d mess up their current modular streets. Don’t think the dimensions are as bad as those people make it out to be!

  10. Michael says:

Aaand 399. I’ve got the coin saved, but I also still have the Detectives Office and Restaurant in boxes from the sales. I may try and wait for a Myer 20% off.

  11. Warmongurl says:

Wow, what an amazing set! I love the variety and am especially excited for the dentist’s office, Lego fan apartment, and bakery. The fountain sidewalk element and beautiful building facades are delightful. And yippee for 8 great minifigs and a 2nd baby for my collection!! Am definitely buying this set.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, there’s something for everyone in this set and I also like how LEGO have paid do much attention to the interiors. I do wish we got a baby girl, though!

  12. Andy says:

Screw you lego, stop releasing sooo many awesome sets, had to walk away from a 20% off Sydney opera house last week, because there is another set I wanted more, I won’t be buying any rouge one sets because I’m having to prioritise what I buy, I think I spent over $3k in the last year on lego, it’s all too much lego, pls take a year off so I can catch up.
This set looks awesome, looks like I’m going to have to take another item off my Wishlist to get it.

    • Jay says:

Haha, I know the pain. From what next year looks like.. It’s definitely going to get crazier. The good thing about modulars is that you typically have time to buy them as they usually stay in circulation for at least 2 years.

  13. Hudson says:

First to respond to Michael, here is the pricing guide from the set description “US $279.99 – CA $329.99 – DE 239.99€ – UK £169.99 – DK 2099.00 DKK”. This set is really a must have for me. I am going to be buying it as soon as it comes out. Just the level of detail with all the different styles and fun pieces, it has got to be one of my favorite sets to date so far.

  14. Duncan says:

    Wow, just wow.

I wish I had the money to afford one of the modular building sets. This one is my favorite that I have seen.

  15. Mark says:

I don’t think a superlative has been coined yet to describe this set! Congratulations to Jamie & his team for paying homage to the modular series in the most amazing way possible.

  16. Marguerite says:

As I’m the Lego fan in my household, I’m glad the Lego fan is a female 🙂 I have to support my own Lego habit (though there’s a big box in the closet with LBRI on the return address, so there’s something special coming for Christmas…), so I’ll have to see if I can save up enough for this while also getting the elves castle 🙂 it looks great!

  17. Michael says:

Ahhh that is so exciting! I’m a newish Modular enthusiast, but I am so excited by this one. My favourite by far! Hopefully under $400.

Between this, the Lego Batman movie sets and the Beatles set, I’m saving my pennies!

    • Kane says:

Even at $400 that is 10c per part which good for Australia, also is 1.5 modular so about $266 for the 32×32 base model for relative reverence to the past sets.

      • Jay says:

Especially good for Australia since retailers tend to discount modulars. If this set is available during a 20% off sale, the value becomes irresistible

    • Jay says:

$399.99 so technically under $400! Once it goes on sale in Myer, you’re pretty much compelled to buy it!

Next year is definitely shaping up to be an awesome year for LEGO fans.
