Australian LEGO Release Dates – First Half of 2017 sets (January – June)

It’s that time of the year again, the release of the new Australian 1HY LEGO retail catalogue. There’s nothing particular new or groundbreaking in the catalogue, but the most important information it conveys are the local retail release dates for all the new first half of 2017 LEGO sets.

Many of these sets with the exception of the new Speed Champions, Elves and Minecraft are already available to purchase online on LEGO.com at full price, but if you’ve been a longtime Aussie LEGO fan, you’ll know that if you wait, you can typically expect discounts of up to 30% off when they eventually arrive at local retailers.

UPDATE: For those of you wondering about sets that weren’t featured in the catalogue like 75170 The Phantom here in Australia, I’ve compiled a list of Aussie Retailer Exclusive sets.

At this point, I’m not sure if there’s a way to view the new 2017 LEGO Brand Catalogue online. It’s currently only viewable via the LEGO 3D Catalogue app on your mobile. Here are the respective App Store download links:  iOS Android. You’ll have to select “Australia” to view the catalogue specific to Australia.

Update: German one hereIf you’d like to view the catalogue without having to download the app, you can check out the .

As the calendar can’t be viewable as a PDF or in a browser, I’ve screenshotted all the pages from the Aussie 2017 LEGO Catalogue so you can view them all in the post. They should be high-res enough that you can zoom into them to check out the details.

As always, this should help you plan our your purchases in the new year for the next few months. For me, I’ll hopefully be ordering a few sets online to review, but I’ll wait for most of the sets to come to retail to snag them at a discount.

This new 2017 catalogue has a few interesting bits of information.

Firstly, there’s a teaser for the new Guardians of the Galaxy 2 sets which has a release date of March 2017. These are probably being kept under wraps to be revealed at one of the upcoming toy fairs in the coming weeks.

Secondly, just like last year, the new wave of Speed Champions sets are missing yet again. This seems to be a repeat of 2016 where the sets were delayed till the second half of the year for whatever reason. Like last year, we should be able to buy them online when they’re released, but it’s a little disappointing that fans are made to wait for months again this year.

Here’s what Australian Speed Champions fans are set to miss out on. These go on sale on 1 March 2017 in the United States.

It’s a pretty light catalogue, but I’m particular excited for he new Marvel, Ninjago, Elves, Friends and of course, The LEGO Batman Movie sets. City is as boring as ever (with the exception of the Pizza Van) and Nexo Knights, while looking like there are some really well designed sets is probably not going to set the LEGO world on fire.

Oh and if you’re wondering about sets not featured in the catalogue, those tend to be retail exclusives. I’ll have another post once I manage to track down the location of each exclusive!

Anyway, here’s the retail release schedule for all the sets and themes that are headed to Australian toy stores in the next few months.

So what do you think of the early 2017 lineup of sets? I’m pretty stoked that we don’t seem to have to wait extra long this year for sets, as the entire first half release looks (with the exception of Speed Champions) set to be released before April.

There’s not a whole lot on my super wishlist, but I’m pretty optimistic about the new wave of sets that are going to hit us any time now.

Any news on who get the exclusive right to Arkham Asylum? My guess would be Target because they seem to get the latest Batman exclusives like Tumbler & Classic Batcave.

  2. Shea says:

Wow, thanks for all the effort you put into this post. It’s great to have all this information available in one place.

Just thought you might like to know for future, there does appear to be a way to get the actual PDF catalogue from the app – when you’re viewing the digital version, tap on the three bar menu in the top right corner below the home button and there’s an option to ‘Download PDF file’.

    • Jay says:

You’re welcome! Thanks for the tip, I never knew you could do that. Now… if only there were a way to get the PDFs via a link, which will make it easier for people to browse through the catalogues on their computers.

  3. Jason says:

Hi Jay, when can we expect to see the last few Star Wars sets (Skiff, Landspeeder, A-Wing) to hit the Australian shelves? I see them on the Australian Lego store but they are RRP with a hefty shipping cost…

    • Jay says:

Those sets you listed are retail exclusives as they aren’t featured on the catalogue. It’s unclear which store will get what at this stage, and there’s also a small possibility that some of them might not even make it to Australia at all. I’ll update when I get the information!

  4. Christopher says:

When are the Jan set going to be in store. everything looks bare on the shelves at David Jones, Meyer, Kmart, Target!

  5. James says:

Congratulations on an awesome blog Jay. I love your review style and turn to your blog religiously for information and help in the wide world of Lego.

  6. Watto says:

Hey jay (I know this is a dumb question) But why does Australia get some sets (Eg. The Lego batman movie) 4 months later than the U.S and other parts of the world?

    • Jay says:

Well, technically, we get them at the same time as everyone else – it’s available on LEGO.com. The delay is purely because LEGO have certain arrangements with retailers, which determine when they show up in stores. Things like market size, demand and other factors all contribute to it. To be honest, no one outside of LEGO Australia really knows why.

Fun fact, although it may seem that we get shafted on release dates often, the US is only getting the new batch of Star Wars sets in March! We were actually one of the first countries in the world to get the latest wave!

  7. Francois says:

$150 for the Scuttler argh… you’re killing me, Lego.

As usual I will be waiting for potential sales although retailers like Target and K-Mart tend to do surprises ones for walk-ins (not advertised on websites).

  8. Karrakazul says:

Pretty much all the Batman movie sets are a must have for me and I’m checking out the stores here on the West coast every other day for the minifigures hitting the shelves, also nabbing the Marvel sets and a chunk of City because it is always nice to have some normal civilian stuff lining the streets.

  9. Hammo says:

Looks like us LEGO Minecraft fans will be twiddling out thumbs until March. Hopefully, they release them in one go as a thank-you for waiting that long 😀

    Thanks for the update. 🙂

  10. TC says:

Has anyone spotted Batman Minifigures in Sydney North?

I missed out completely on the Disney Series, just didn’t see any. Even though some friends saw them in Woolies

  11. Kay says:

Thanks again for the super effort!! Love the price list and more importantly the dates of Aussie retail release.

There’s nothing that I have a burning desire to get asap. Will wait patiently for the batman movie sets.

    • Jay says:

      You’re very welcome!

“There’s nothing that I have a burning desire to get asap” – that’s how I felt all year last year! My resolve will be tested by The LEGO Batman Movie though!

  12. BradC says:

If previous catalogues are anything to go by, the sets that are missing in this one will be retail/shop@home exclusives.

I had a quick look through some of the themes and found the following sets missing:

    Creator: Nothing

    City: 60142, 60143

    DC and Marvel Superheroes: Nothing

    Minecraft: Nothing

    Nexo Knights: 70358, 70359

    Ninjago: Nothing

    Star Wars: 75170, 75173, 75174, 75175

    Technic: Nothing

    The Lego Batman Movie: 70910, 70911, 70912

    Hope this helps 🙂

    • Jay says:

Yup! I’ll be compiling a list of retailer exclusives just like last year too. Another curious omission from the catalogue are those new Brickheadz sets that were teased last year in Comic Con. I thought it was strange that they weren’t part of this year’s catalogue given they made such a big deal about them in 2016.

  13. LegoFanBlue says:

Thanks for making the list. I was actually wondering when some of these things were going to be released. I couldnt wait until February for Lego Batman Movie sets so I bought the batcave, the Tail Gator and a few minifigures from Lego.com. Cant wait for more reviews from you

  14. Sgoteam says:

Love the new Lego Ninjago sets, they look amazing! I think this will be a good series, and I’ll collect them all, like how I collected Season 4 Rebooted

The new Marvel sets are pretty cool too, with new Minifigures like She-Hulk, Red She-Hulk, Invincible Iron Man, Coulson, etc

The Star Wars sets are alright, although there is one and a half page about the old stuff. Like the Battle of Naboo set though

    • Jay says:

Yup, Ninjago has been excellent for the last 2 themes in a row. Looks like they’re really stepping it up for the movie later this year.

I think the newer Marvel sets are priced pretty well! The Coulson set seems to be a bargain. I definitely won’t wait till March and will most likely order it online when a juicy exclusive gets offered.

Lando in the A-Wing set (retailer exclusive, which is why it isnt in the catalogue) is also looking great too!

      • Sgoteam says:

Actually, what does ‘retailer exclusive’ mean? And I hope you will make reviews for Ninjago, cuz I haven’t see any Ninjago reviews in your blog. And the Coulson set being pricey is alright, cuz it comes with three exclusive Minifigures.

        • Jay says:

Ah, it means that you can only find them in specific retailers. For example, Ninjago’s City of Stix set is a Toys R Us exclusive.

Yeah, I’ll definitely try reviewing more Ninjago this year!

      • Steve says:

Hi Jay, any word on the SW related retail exclusives yet?

  15. Anthony Christian says:

    Thank you for this post.

60150 Pizza Van [297.99] – Hopefully the price is a typo.

The wait for the Moana sets is disappointing, the movie will be long gone by the time these arrive

  16. Mark says:

Cool! A couple of questions. Is there any info yet on what the next wave of collectible minifigs is going to be? They are listed for release in May on the Batman minifig page with the line “You’ll be surprised…”. Also, I presume the Assembly Square will make it to retail stores at some point, do you know what month this generally occurs?

    • Jay says:

No news yet, although my most educated guess is that it’ll be Series 17. The third Minifigures slot of the year will probably be Ninjago Movie-themed to coincide with the movie’s release date of late September!

If previous years are to go by… Assembly Square should hit stores sometime closer to June as the modulars are usually a big fixture in Myer’s toy sale catalogue. I’ve got my eyes on it too then!

  17. Andrew says:

Thanks for the time taken to set this post up like you have. Very easy to navigate.

  18. Michael says:

Thanks for all the effort again mate.

Make sure to check out the battle suit Nexo Knights. They’re the cheap sets, but now come in cute little mechs, with the new mech body piece that’s going to be great for MOCs.

Very glad everything will be out by March. I can wait until February for the Lego Batman Movie sets- can’t I? 🙂

Also, any news on retailer exclusives?

    • Jay says:

You’re welcome! I’m still waiting for the 2016 Nexo Ultimate Packs to go on sale, but they won’t seem to go below 10!

I’ll be sure to pick up a few Nexo Knights when they get in stores. The villains look particularly excellent.

No news on retailer exclusives! That’s going to be the next thing I try to suss out!
