Jay’s Brick Blog Year In Review – 2016 Retrospective

What a year 2016 has been! I can’t believe that 2016 has flown by, and no, I’m still not used to the fact that it’s 2017!

For all the bad stuff that people associated with the year 2016, I actually had one of the best years ever – not just in terms of this LEGO blog, but in both my family and professional life as well. Going through the archives of last year to recount my steps was a particularly uplifting journey.

First thing’s first, I do have to thank you. Yes, you, reading this article right now. You’ve made 2016 into the biggest year for this blog and you’ve been instrumental in making this endeavour so worthwhile and personally fulfilling.

This blog would be nothing without you reading, commenting and sharing my posts across the internet. I feel like I can call many of you my friends and it’s been a blast discussing LEGO, bricks and everything in between this year.

I wrote this in last year’s retrospective and it resonated in 2016 more than ever.

So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for all your support. It means the world to me and it drives me to up my game to serve you better in 2017. Look out for the biggest giveaway in this blog’s history sometime this week as a special thank you to my readers!

Let’s check out some of the highlights of 2016.

State of the blog

I entered 2016 without many grand plans for the blog. I made a commitment to improve and get better at what I do, from my writing, to photography to reviews and I’m quite satisfied with how I’ve done in 2016.

In total, I wrote 122 posts in 2016, down slightly from 125 in 2015. It’s not too bad considering I had one of the busiest years of my life with work and having a baby and all that. I’ve also been a lot more realistic about posting, and was especially wary of not burning myself out writing about LEGO.

One of my strongest principles when it comes to this blog is that I need to enjoy doing it. The moment it starts to feel like a drag, or if I have to force myself to write will be the moment that it all falls apart. In 2016, I’ve had to safeguard this commitment more than ever, to not do more than was humanly possible.

I’ve never been about quantity and smashing out content anyway, so you guys should be very familiar with the pace here! For 2017, I have the same goals as 2016, do more with this blog, but not at the expense of quality! And also to write at least one review a week!

LEGO reviews are one of my favourite thing to write, and a big part of this blog so I am quite delighted to share that I wrote 45 reviews this year, down slightly from 46 reviews last year.

I technically reviewed more LEGO this year, as last year’s numbers included 7 LEGO books, as opposed to 1 this year.

Here’s a breakdown of themes I reviewed in 2016. Interestingly, it seemed like I reviewed nearly every major theme in 2016 with the exception of Minecraft and Duplo. I’m pretty pleased that there was a lot more variety in 2016, although (as always) I regret not having enough time to review (or build for that matter), all the sets I had in mind.

It should come to no surprise that Super Hero themes dominated the charts in 2016, but I was pretty surprised to see Star Wars taking third place!

Here are the top 10 reviews this year by page views:

  1. Minifigures – The Disney Series
  2. Minifigures Series 15
  3. 42056 Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS
  4. 76047 Black Panther Pursuit
  5. 10252 Volkswagen Beetle
  6. 5002946 Silver Centurion
  7. Minifigures Series 16
  8. 75117 Kylo Ren
  9. Marvel Mighty Micros
  10. 10721 Juniors Iron Man vs Loki

Here are some of the biggest highlights from the year.

Becoming a dad

A photo posted by Jay Ong (@jayong28) on

I became a dad this year, welcoming a beautiful baby girl into the world. Nothing will ever top this milestone and it’s defined 2016, and my entire being. She’s still a little too young to help out with reviews… but it’s only a matter of time till she’s able to weigh in on Duplo!

Achieving Recognised LEGO Fan Media status

This was unplanned, but was certainly a very nice surprise. Early in 2016, Jay’s Brick Blog officially became a Recognised LEGO Fan Media (which used to be called Recognised Online RLUG) which is a massive honour and privilege.

In addition to being connected with other LEGO Ambassadors, I’ve been able to get access to some early review sets, such as the Ideas Maze, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Volkswagen Beetle as well as being able to give away better prizes!

Hitting a traffic milestone

Last year, I also managed to hit 1 million views early in the year. It has always been a personal target to hit 1 million, so hitting that magic number was quite a big thing for me. Of course, looking back at the year, we’ve gone way beyond that number.

2016 was a pretty good year for traffic, having doubled 2015’s numbers. Not sure if I’ll be able to keep that up, but we’ll see how 2017 turns out!

LEGO Nexo Knights

2016 saw the debut of NEXO Knights, LEGO’s biggest new theme in a while, with properties that spawn TV shows, books, and even a digital app. It’s one of LEGO’s most ambitious new themes, driven by strong characters and some really kickass set designs.

Despite the massive marketing efforts, and some of the best design brains being poured into the Nexo Knights theme, I feel like the theme never really took off in 2016, both among kids and adult LEGO fans. This is obviously a personal observation based on anecdotal evidence.

I think that 2017 will be the final year of Nexo Knights, before we see the theme wind down in 2018. Which is a shame, because I do like the Nexo Knights theme, even though I haven’t personally bought a lot of the sets. Then again, I liked Chima… so what do I know about LEGO. ?

A great year for Collectible Minifigures

2016 was an exceptional year for fans of LEGO’s Collectible Minifigures theme. We were seriously spoiled in 2016 with Disney, Series 15, Series 16 and even the German National Team series.

Disney was a universal smash hit, so much so that people are still having trouble getting their hands on minifigures, and Series 15 and Series 16 are way up there as outstanding series.

There were no minifigure blips at all in 2016, and I’m really glad that LEGO gave us so many memorable minifigs last year.

The 2nd Jay’s Brick Blog Awards

Continuing on from last year, here’s the second Jay’s Brick Blog Awards, where I celebrate the most exceptional sets, themes and minifigures from the year.

It’s still a relatively simple format, and I’ll only be awarding sets that I reviewed or built in the last year. There was an unprecedented number of sets released in 2016, and like most adult LEGO fans, I’ve accumulated a serious backlog of unbuilt sets which I hope to get to this year.

Without further ado, here are the 2nd Jay’s Brick Blog Awards!

Original Theme of the Year

LEGO Ninjago takes the Original Theme of the Year with a really strong showing in 2016. The theme has made a terrific comeback, with 2016 giving us some of the most audacious sets and some fantastical settings that just ooze flavour and fun.

From Dragons to Steampunk Zeppelins to Pirate Airships, Ninjago seemed to do everything right, balancing interactive designs with that cool factor that Nexo Knights hasn’t really been able to emulate.

Ninjago has simultaneously provided us with a breath of fresh air, mixed in with the maturity of a 5-year old theme that has managed to defied the odds in 2016 with inspired designs that perfectly resonate with LEGO’s core audience.

Licensed Theme of the Year

The Licensed Theme of the Year goes to Marvel! I enjoyed most of Marvel’s sets last year, which was given a boost by Captain America: Civil War, which was such an exceptional summer blockbuster.

The sets were particularly varied in 2016, with some really great sets coming out of Civil War, the triumphant debut of Ghost Rider and not to mention one of the best Spider-Man sets in recent history.

Marvel did things mostly right, without being overly flashy and most importantly, excelled at introducing new characters and minifigures into the Marvel LEGO Universe.

Minifigure of the Year

This is a no brainer – Finn from Adventure Time easily takes the Minifigure of the Year Award, by virtue of having one of the best minifigure faces in history. Have you seen what you can do with Finn heads?

Adventure Time is a massive property, and LEGO did an awesome job translating the fun brightly-coloured characters into minifigures via LEGO Dimensions. Finn’s also a personal favourite of mine as I really loved the cartoon during its zenith.

Set of the Year – Runner Up

LEGO absolutely nailed the Volkswagen Beetle, which manages to win runner-up in the Set of the Year awards. The beautiful blue bug was brought to life in spectacular fashion, with some of the most enticing curves you’ll ever see on a LEGO model.

The build was satisfyingly complex, without it being too challenging, introducing a whole new array of building techniques on a LEGO model that just looks so damn good on display.

Coming in at a great price-point, the LEGO Volkswagen Beetle is everything you could ever want from a Creator Expert set, which is why is thoroughly deserved to be Runner-Up in the Set of the Year award.

Set of the Year

I would never have thought that I’d fall in love with a Technic set, but from the moment I unboxed the Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS, I knew that I was in for an experience of a lifetime.

2016’s Set of the Year Award goes to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, one of the most incredible Technic sets that have ever released. This is actually my first Technic set in a long time, but I was blown away by the set and all it had to offer.

It just screams premium and bold, two things that are synonymous with the Porsche brand. I was firstly, very impressed with how well they translated those intangible associations into a Technic set.

Months after (painfully) putting it together, it still remains a fixture in my LEGO room, attracting praise from visitors and anyone that beholds it in all its orangey glory.

While it may be flawed from a technical standpoint and may not totally impress hardcore Technic aficionados, it hit all the right notes for me, as proof that LEGO can be so much more than just a toy.

That’s it, hope you enjoyed the 2016 Jay’s Brick Blog Awards and the Retrospective Piece. We’re entering yet another exciting year in 2017 with plenty of cool sets coming our way AND a LEGO Batman Movie as well.

Thanks for reading! Let me know in the comments what you’re looking forward to the most this year, whether its a rumour, unconfirmed re-release of a certain UCS or something from your wildest LEGO dreams!

I’m still in holiday mode so here’s my belated congratulations Jay! It’s been another awesome year in Lego and your blog is my first go to. You really do make your readers feel like they are part of a community with your personal touch. Your little girl is very cute btw ? As a huge Star Wars fan the two things I’m most looking forward to this year are 1) a return to form for UCS (please, please TLG…re-make the Falcon), and 2) the release of Ep. VIII sets. Here’s to happy times and good health for the year ahead!

    • Jay says:

Lucky you to still be on holiday! Thanks so much for your kind words, she takes after her mum in the cuteness department!

LEGO have a LOT to do to make up for last year. I really hope the twin rumours of a UCS Snowspeeder and Falcon come to fruition. It’s gonna be expensive… but oh so worth it! Omg, I also can’t believe Ep 8 is this year!

  2. Jen says:

Thanks Jay for the awesome blog. As much as I wait for each new post and would love to see more, I completely agree with your commitment to quality over quantity. I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into each post. At 122 posts for the year, that works out on average to be a new post every 3 days which is pretty good.

I discovered your blog early in 2016 when looking for info on minifigures. Your minifigure reviews and “how to feel” guides are the best. It doesn’t surprise me to see those reviews in the top 10 list for the year. I know I have viewed those posts many times, both to help with my search and when my son finally opens each one to re-read your opinion on that minifigure.

I wasn’t initially a fan of the Nexo Knights theme but my son loved the Ultimate Nexo Knights and our love for the theme has grown from there. The sets with their playability and the characters really appeal to him. Despite only being 4, we gave him a number of sets for Christmas including the Fortrex and Jestro’s Evil Mobile. I’ve even gone out and bought more Nexo Knights sets to give him as presents throughout the year if I can wait that long. I’m learning that you can get a lot of the sets that are retiring soon at good prices.

I’m looking forward to the Lego Batman Movie this year. My son loves Lego and Batman so it’s a no brainer for us.

Best wishes for an awesome 2017!

    • Jay says:

Thanks for the lovely words! That’s really encouraging to hear that your son has taken to the theme, which is LEGO’s intention all along. Does he play the video games and make use of the Nexo Powers as well? I think if I were at that age, and had access to all these things, I’d be all over it too.

  3. Jolene says:

Congrats on hitting all those milestones and happy new year! ?

  4. Michael says:

I started reading your blog a couple of years ago when getting ready for a trip to Legoland. It’s been my go-to Lego source ever since. I’m a reasonably ‘lonely’ AFOL, and I love the sense of community here. You’re also a top-notch reviewer. Can’t wait till my 5 year old can read and I can send him here!

All the best to you and yours mate.

    • Jay says:

Thanks so much for the continuing support, Michael! Totally get what you mean when you say that it can be a “lonely” hobby. I know only a handful of people in real life that are into LEGO, which led to me starting this blog in the first place, I needed an outlet to rave about it!

  5. Charly says:

    Hey Jay,
Yours is the only blog I follow (lego or otherwise) and I thoroughly enjoy reading each one even if concerns a theme I’m not particularly keen on!
I hope you keep up the excellent reviews filled with detail and humour.
I will be heading up to the Goldcoast soon. Do you know what happened to the lego shop that was supposed to be opening November 2016?
Wishing for some decent city buildings and maybe a winter village addition this year. Have already bought the kids their birthday and Christmas lego for this year in the sales!
Thank you for helping me out of my dark ages and all the best for 2017!

    • Jay says:

Hi Charly, thank you so much for your support! No idea about the Gold Coast LEGO store. I think because of the tragedy at Dreamworld, the opening naturally had to be postponed because the park was closed.

On Facebook, they’re indicating that they’re working towards a late January opening! Hope your trip lines up with the opening! I’d love photos and to hear what it’s like!

  6. Daniel says:

I had a baby boy this year, so I hope you’re enjoying parenthood as much as I am. I didn’t really come out of my dark ages properly until he was well on his way and bought the Parisian Restaurant Modular as a present for myself a few months before he was born. I have a nice little stockpile of sets waiting for him when he’s older but the prize of the collection is 4999 Vestas Wind Turbine which was my first Father’s Day present – super rare but well worth tracking down if you have a good chunk of cash you’re not too attached to. I love your blog, some of the best reviews out there, and I hope you have a great 2017 personally and professionally.

    • Jay says:

Congratulations to you! Hope you’re all settled into fatherhood!

Wow, the Wind Turbine is such an excellent set! What a great score. I personally collect more vintage-style sets, which are the pride of my collection. Mostly stuff from my childhood that I missed out on.

  7. LegoFanBlue says:

Thanks Jay! Your blog is one the best Lego blogs out there and I check it daily for new posts. Can’t wait to see some of your reviews next year and congratulations on your beautiful little girl. Hopefully this year will be even better!

  8. Hammerdragon says:

Congratulations on 2016 for you Jay. Your blog is one of 3 Lego sites I visit regularly and look forward to continuing to do so in 2017. Also having kids puts a whole new spin on Lego as I’m sure you’ll find out in years to come so enjoy it.
Thought I’d put a little comment on the Nexo Knights theme. I’ve actually loved this theme this year, as has my son. The Lego City sets become stale and repetative so I encouraged him to look at other themes. We ended up with 8 sets in 2016 including Jestro’s Volcano Lair and Magmar’s Siege Machine of Doom, which have excellent playability for the younglings. The sets for this year look enticing too although I’m edging towards some Technic sets with some eyecatching ones in store, but also trying to scale back a bit as I’m running out of display space! As you say Minfigs also had a good year. I hadn’t intended to get many of these as I was losing a little faith but got lured back by some crackers inc Ice Queen, Spy and the Cute little devil.
Have a great 2017 and I’ll be back soon for the giveaway!!!!

    • Jay says:

Thank you! It’s great to hear that Nexo Knights has been received well with your son! Jestro’s lair is on my wishlist, so I’m definitely eyeing it at a good price. Running out of display space is such a perennial problem! I think I bought a little less LEGO in 2016, purely because I was conscious that I had no space (or time!) to build and display them!

  9. Teyla says:

Congratulations on your gorgeous daughter! Thanks for a fabulous blog. My kids have been into Lego for years but I’m a recent convert and your blog has been just what I was looking for. My Lego dreams include the Creator expert Assembly Square and the next few series of minifigures!

    • Jay says:

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m looking forward to the Assembly Square too! Just waiting till it arrives at retail here so I can nab it at a discount!

  10. Michael Kim says:

First off congratulations to you and Fatherhood!
Your passion and commitment to this blog is amazing.
You consistently deliver solid reads as well as in depth details about the product.
Look forward to the many good reads/reviews ahead of us.

    Mike

  11. James says:

Thank you Jay for your considerable efforts throughout 2016.
Yours is the only Lego blog that I follow and I look forward to every update.
    Happy New Year to you!

  12. Thank you Jay for your insightful and informative reviews this year! Congratulations on the new addition to your family dude! Being daddy is not always an easy job, but it is very rewarding.
Being a LEGO fan your blog is essential for early information and great sets worthy of my hard earned dollars. Thank you Jay! I look forward to this coming years reviews

    • Jay says:

Thank you so much for your kind words! You’re definitely right that being a dad is tough, but man, it’s been absolutely life changing!

  13. Warmongurl says:

Thanks for a great blog Jay! Yours is one of two blogs that I follow and my favorite in regards to reviews and minifigure feel guides. You put interesting observations, character, and detail into your reviews that they are a joy to read.

In 2017, I’m most excited for the rumor of a new UCS Millenium Falcon! I’m also looking forward to exploring the new Batman movie theme.

    • Jay says:

You’re welcome! I’m so honoured to be on your list! Oh man… those UCS Millennium Falcon rumours are going to destroy my wallet if they’re real.

  14. Brilliant, I’m so happy for you & I must admit I first found your Blog researching Star Wars Advent Calendars, now on my 5th (I think) but I’m a big collector of all Star Wars Lego.

My latest builds have been Big Ben, Wall.E, Yellow Submarine, Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle, First Order Tie Fighter, First Order Transporter and 75105 Millenium falcon.

I now have on order Tower Bridge, to build up my ‘Expert’ library.
