The Dreamworld LEGO Certified Store to officially open on 28 January 2017

So it’s official, the opening date for the much anticipated LEGO Store at Dreamworld has been announced on Facebook28 January 2017! Australia’s very first LEGO Certified Store (LCS) was originally due to open in November 2016 but due to the recent tragedy at Dreamworld and temporary closure of the theme park, the delay was sort of unavoidable.

The announcement is obviously fantastic news for Queenslanders and LEGO fans headed to the Gold Coast for the holidays and ties in quite nicely with the Australia Day public holiday.

On Facebook, they were also rather specific in claiming that the Dreamworld LCS would be the biggest LEGO Store in Australia, to give it an edge against the upcoming LEGO Store at the Melbourne Legoland Discovery Centre  which will most likely be an LCS too (don’t quote me on this just yet!)

Do note that the Dreamworld LEGO Store is not an Official LEGO Brand Store – it’s a LEGO Certified Store, which is kinda the same thing, but there are a few distinct differences.

LEGO fans of all ages will be able to expect (updated)

  • Pick A Brick Wall – a custom-built fixture with round canisters, each filled with an assortment of LEGO bricks and elements that fans can purchase in set priced “cups” or by weight
  • Build a Minifigure Station – customise up to 3 minifigures from a large variety of minifig parts and accessories.
  • The Living Room – an interactive play area for kids to play and creatively express themselves with LEGO bricks
  • LEGO Sculptures – there will be 10 life-sized LEGO models
  • Exclusive sets (Modulars, Creator Expert, Direct to Consumer sets etc) on sale all year round. I expect that the LEGO Disney Castle will be on sale. The press release mentions “Hard-To-Find Collector’s Items”
  • Regular Activities such as Monthly Mini Builds and Special Events

Oh, and you do not need a ticket to Dreamworld to enter the LEGO Certified Store as it has an entrance that is accessible to the public.

There’s been a bit of confusion about how an LCS is defined, but that’s been cleared up by LEGO in a recent blog post on the Ambassador Network.

Here’s the lowdown on what a LEGO Certified Store is:

LEGO Certified Store Singapore – Suntec City

Why LEGO Certified Stores?

Essentially, LEGO are protective about their brand and how customers perceive them. The LEGO Group Discovered more than 300 stores across the world that exclusively sold LEGO, but were not official LEGO Stores (which are operated directly by LEGO).

Being independently run, these stores had no consistent look & feel, which was a challenge to LEGO, the LEGO Certified Store program was born to give these store owners the chance to ensure that their stores fell in line with The LEGO Group’s standards.

Think of it as a franchisee system, where LEGO licenses out the “official LEGO Store look & branding”.

What can you expect at an LCS?

Like official LEGO stores, you can expect a premium, high quality retail experience for shoppers, not unlike what you’d get from an official LEGO Brand Retail store. You get the high level of customer service, a massive (often complete and inclusive of exclusives) selection of products, from LEGO sets to merchandise and events such as Monthly Builds.

LCS also have the rights to use the LEGO brand and logo across their stores.

Do LEGO Certified Stores have the VIP program?

This is the major difference between an LCS and a LEGO Brand Retail store. At LEGO Brand Retail Stores, you can use your LEGO VIP account and collect VIP points on purchases, as well as enjoy promotions like Double VIP when they run.

The LCS stores do not support the LEGO VIP program BUT, LEGO have indicated that they’re in the process of launching a loyalty program through LEGO Certified Stores.

Details are scant at the moment, but what we know is that it’ll have the same mechanics as the LEGO VIP program, but they can only be used within that particular region and only at physical stores.

There are plenty of LEGO Certified Stores around the world. Here’s a list of countries. Notice that this doesn’t include countries like the US, Canada, England and Germany, where LEGO run their own Brand Retail Stores.

Looks like we can add Australia to the list very soon!

Europe: Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia & Slovenia

Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE – Abu Dhabi & UAE – Dubai

Asia/Pacific: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore & South Korea

So that’s it! The opening date for the Dreamworld LEGO Certified Store has all but been locked in!

If you’re lucky enough to live on the Gold Coast or are in Brisbane, will you be visiting any time soon? Also, do you think that this will be a big draw to visit the Gold Coast or Dreamworld?

Stay tuned for more details!

I’m planning on going on Opening Day, I only live about an hour drive from Dreamworld 🙂

I think the main attraction for AFOLs like me would be the pick-a-brick wall, particularly if the cost is less than what you would spend on Bricklink. We’ve never really had something like that here in Australia.

Do you think it is likely that they would have the special bonus sets that you can get online when spending above $x amount on a certain theme, etc? (like the NEXO KNIGHTS™ Shrunken Headquarters 30378 currently up on the website). That might also help draw me in at least once or more a month, since I won’t have to spend the $200 minimum to get free shipping.

Oh, lucky you! The PAB wall looks great from some early photos. It loops around the entire middle pillar. I really hope we get a great selection there.

I definitely think that there will be bonus sets, and polybags. LEGO Certified Stores get fantastic support from LEGO, so I would be very surprised if those bonuses don’t extend to the stores.

For the opening store promotion, I will also be very, very surprised if we don’t get the LEGO Store set as a bonus.

I hope this picks up business for dreamworld again. Went there yesterday and there was close to nobody there. This tragedy was awful, but it wasn’t the parks fault, and they’re taking every step available to make sure it won’t happen again. Hopefully having a Lego Store right next door will change things again.

Most excited to see what sets are on offer. Will retailer exclusive sets be available in the store?

    • Jay says:

I don’t know if it’ll be a massive draw, but yeah, that would be great if business picks up.

I’ve heard similar things about how the park is a ghost town – I also feel that it’s incredibly tough on the hard-working staff there as well.

No idea about retailer exclusives, but keep an eye out next week for more information 😉

Most excited about the pick a brick wall for MOC’s I’m not aware of anywhere else in Queensland, or Australia where you can get something like that.

  4. Magmafrost says:

“not unlike what you’d get from an official LEGO Brand Retail store.”

This is a pretty pointless description for Australians, lol

    • Jay says:

Well considering we’ve never gotten a proper store here, it’s still kinda valid. Especially for fans who have traveled overseas to experience them!

  5. William says:

Do you know if there will be the Lego store set 40145

  6. Mark says:

Bugger. I leave the Gold Coast on the 26th ?

  7. :D says:

Hopefully a Sydney and Melbourne store some time?

    • Jay says:

Melbourne’s going to get a store at the Legoland Discovery Centre, so that’s the closest thing for us! Hopefully Sydney will get one too. I could see a LEGO store fitting nicely at Pitt Street Mall.

  8. Charly says:

Bugger, going to miss the opening by a few days. Was so looking forward to checking out the retailer exclusives. Had also been on YouTube for hints on how to get the best value out of the pick n mix! Ah well, next holiday it’ll have to be.

Best news of the year and I’m aware it’s still only January!! Can’t imagine this being topped other than iff I win Tatts Lotto or find another way to pay off my mortgage this year!
Have planned a trip to GC in April to celebrate my son’s 8th birthday. When it was announced last year that it was opening at Dreamworld, obviously I was delighted to finally get a decent store in Oz, but being in Melbourne was unlikely to spend much time there. So I got on the blower to the (travel agent) wife and suggested a trip. She jumped on board straight away as the girl loves a holiday. Kept the Lego part quiet initially….. We recently booked the trip and she then informed me that the shop still wasn’t open. Immediate slight panic mode!! Obviously realised with the park tragedy a delay was expected……… so to finally get the news it will be open when we travel is fantastic. The Pick-a-brick wall is the major highlight. Been wanting to check one of these out for God knows how long. Roll on April

    • Jay says:

Tatts Lotto would be pretty sweet! Glad to hear it’s all lining up for your son’s trip! I hope to make it there for the opening, so fingers crossed that works out and I’ll be sure to do a major write-up!

I also hope that the LEGO models and displays are up to scratch! I would hope that some LEGO creeps into the park somehow.

  10. Ryan says:

No VIP points means no sales from me. I might go have a look but order from S@H.

    • Hammerdragon says:

Can understand the frustration on this one, but as I spend sporadically through the year and maybe only once from LEGO. com due to the ridiculous cost of posting this is not a concern for me.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, I don’t think the LEGO Dreamworld store is going to be great for bargains, especially when you can get sets at 20% or more during sales. The upside is the opportunity to get exclusives or limited edition sets like polybags or seasonal sets.

Also, it’s probably aimed at tourists and park visitors first and foremost. Hopefully there’ll be some good discounts if you have a valid ticket.
