So this is a bit of a surprise! The Year of the Rooster set has FINALLY made it to Australia, albeit in very limited fashion.
Here are the details of the promotion, which is run exclusively in Myer. To get a free LEGO 40234 Year of the Rooster set, you’ll have to spend $88 or more on LEGO at selected Myer stores. The number 88 is a very “auspicious number” in Chinese tradition, in case you were wondering.
This offer is only available in-store at Myer Melbourne City, Sydney City, Chatswood and Doncaster as part of Myer’s larger Lunar New Year event that ends on Sunday, 12 February 2017 or till stocks last.
The Year of the Rooster gift is limited to once per customer.
This weekend is the perfect time to get on this offer if you happen to live near one of the participating stores as there is a 25% off LEGO sale running till Sunday, 22 January 2017.
In addition to the Year of the Rooster set, you’ll also get some LEGO Red Packets. These Red Packets are a traditional part of Chinese New Year, where kids and unmarried individuals will typically receive these red envelopes filled with cash from their elders and married couples.
Of course, if you don’t want to spend money on LEGO at Myer, you can easily build your own Year of the Rooster set if you have the parts. Here’s the download link to the PDF Instructions.
I’m pretty happy that this offer has finally arrived in Australia, seeing as how we missed out on the first two sets (Year of the Sheep and Year of the Monkey), which were only made available in Asian countries.
I’ve always found it weird that Australia was never part of the offer, since we’re located so close to Asia and we have a significant number of Australians who are of Asian descent.
It’s better late than never, and I have to commend LEGO Australia and Myer for finally bringing the promotion here! In previous years, I’ve always had to rely on friends and family overseas to get me these sets – I actually have a set waiting for me in Singapore, so I might not jump on this offer.
I do think it’s a little disappointing that the offer is only in-store and is applicable in only 4 stores, spread across two states. I mean, I do understand why they’ve selected those stores, given that there’s a very large concentration of Asian communities in those areas, but I think that it’s a poor move on Myer’s part, and they would’ve seen a lot more success if they had extended this nationally.
That said, this will likely make the set much easier to obtain on the secondary market, so at the very least, you won’t have to import this set from overseas this time.
I would expect that this offer is going to be extremely popular, so I would urge you not to wait if you’re planning on getting the set, as resellers will be all over it.
Special thanks to Joseph T and Fred R for giving me permission to use their photos!
Are you going to jump on this promotional offer? I’d love to know what you think now that this promotional set is finally available Down Under, and if you think it’s a good move that Myer only limited it to 4 stores.

Well I just had a nice little result with this set. Went into Myer to have a browse as nothing else to do in my lunch break except look at LEGO sets and saw a tray of these at the counter for the first time in a week or so. Couldn’t see the $88 sign though……hmmmmm. Had to ask the question if they were for sale now. Guy was unsure, made a ph call..no answer, so asked if I’d mind waiting a couple of mins whilst he asked a colleague…… Both came back, and confirmed that the $88 offer had ended but no idea what was happening with the roosters. He kindly offered one to me free with any LEGO purchase (except minifigs). SOLD!! Picked up a Nexo Knights set and a free rooster. cock-a-doodle-do!!!!!!!!! They removed the others from sight to confirm what the offer was applicable to now. Looks like the Rooster’s luck is rubbing off on me already!!

Oh wow, brilliant! That’s such a great score. I need to make my way down to the city to see if they have any left!

Myer have had a change of plan. They still had some today as thought I might try and pick up another but now it’s spend $60 to get the freebie, although there’s no advertising.
Jay says
Ah bummer. Lucky you got one before they changed the plan!
Jay says
Bummer! Guess I’m cancelling my plans of heading into the city!

It comes free with S$88 spend on Lego too. But the red packets are only available in Toyrus with minimum S$30 spend of Lego.
By the way, I love your post!
Jay says
Ah is that in Singapore?
Rei says
Yes

Thanks Jay! 🙂
Was the first thing I did when I woke up and saw your update. Fortunately there were sets I ‘needed’ to buy and could get the minimum spend.
Great little set especially as I’m a Rooster too!

Awesome! I totally understand ‘needing’ to buy sets. Happens to be all the time, haha.
Brilliant! I can’t wait to get mine!
