List of Australian LEGO retailer exclusive sets (1st half of 2017)

When the 1HY 2017 LEGO Catalogue was released, there were some notable omissions – which always indicates that those sets are retailer exclusives here in Australia.

I’ve reached out to LEGO for further clarification on the availability of these sets and now, I can finally confirm that most* of the sets missing from the LEGO catalogue will eventually make it to Australia as retailer exclusives.

Of course, the biggest surprise this year was that the LEGO Batman sets that everyone expected to be retailer exclusives (Penguin Arctic Roller and Scarecrow Special Delivery) ended up being a general release.

Except for one set.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I can now confirm that LEGO 75170 The Phantom will not be sold at any Australian retail store and will only be available online via LEGO.com.

Yup, no love for Star Wars Rebels sets once again Down Under. It’s a little disappointing, given that this set was very anticipated by Star Wars fans because of Admiral Thrawn.

So yeah, I hope this allows you to plan ahead and buy this set online during your next LEGO.com shop.

Unfortunately, I still don’t know which retailers will get the sets below. It’s a waiting game now to find out who gets what, so watch this space for updates as soon as they’re available.

So without further ado, here’s the list of LEGO retailer exclusives for the first half of 2017.

LEGO Brickheadz Series 1 Australian Availability

Another slightly worrying theme is BrickHeadz. Apparently Series 1 of BrickHeadz will be a limited distribution, which pretty much means that they won’t be available at your regular retailers. I’m still confirming this bit of information, but I hope to get you an update on the availability soon.

Watch this space for more information.

UPDATE: I’ve just got confirmation on Series 1 of BrickHeadz and it’s not good. The good news first. BrickHeadz will make it to Australia and will be released in March.

The bad news. The sets are going to be exclusive to the LEGO Certified Store in Dreamworld AND the Legoland Discovery Centre Chadstone store (which opens on 18 April).

They will eventually make it to other stores in July, but distribution will be limited. I don’t have clarity over what that means and those details probably won’t be immediately clear until we get closer to July… but I can assume that only certain retailers will stock them and they will be  – sort of like the LEGO Ideas range.

This is pretty bad news for fans who were eagerly anticipating the sets. A bit of a puzzling move from LEGO as well, given that their competitors, Funko Pops are available nearly everywhere in Australia.

If you wanted to get started with collecting BrickHeadz, don’t live in Melbourne or the Gold Coast and are unwilling to wait till July, you’d best be ordering them on LEGO.com.

That’s all I know of right now. While I can’t confirm which stores will get which exclusives, it’s at least slightly comforting to know that these sets will eventually make it Down Under.

If you spot any of these sets at any retailers, leave a comment or drop me a message and I’ll update this post accordingly!

Jay the money transporter from lego is a toyworld exclusive

    https://www.toyworld.com.au/lego-city-money-transporter-60142

  2. Nick says:

Hello Jay, just want to mention the Brickheadz have made their way onto the toyworld website! Although its probably better to get VIP points from lego.com….

  3. Michael K says:

Hi Jay. Saw the “Lance v Lightning” set at TRU yesterday, so it’s probably their exclusive.

  4. Steve says:

In all of the places they could of have exclusive sets from. They chose toyworld. I don’t even know what that store is and where it is. It really a shame that the landspeeder is really over price for 149 pieces.

  5. Damien says:

Hi Jay, FYI I saw the “60143 Auto Transport Heist” at Chadstone (Melbourne) Toys R Us yesterday.

  6. Jonathan Wilson says:

I am surprised that the Dreamworld store (who stock all the “gear” and special stuff like key-chains and those 4-pack minifig bags and all the other stuff no-one else in Australia will ever stock wont sell things like the Phantom that are available on Shop @ Home but which no local retailer wants to sell for whatever reason…

Given that the Dreamworld store clearly sources product from a different supply chain than what LEGO Australia has for local retailers (e.g. their statements that they will range products that aren’t yet available locally but are available on Shop @ Home plus all the gear and things) there is no physical or logistical reason they couldn’t range the Phantom.

My guess is that either there is an issue with Disney or some other rights-holder (e.g. whoever has the rights to the TV show in Oz) that means they cant sell it or the failure of the last Rebels sets in Oz were so bad that LEGO/LEGO Australia/Dreamworld/whoever doesn’t want to risk bringing it in and having it sit on the shelves for a few years at $60 because no-one wants to buy it.

    • Jay says:

I don’t think they source it from a different supply chain – just their status as an LCS allows them to order more than that’s usually available.

It’s definitely a risk thing – LEGO Australia/retailers must have data that the Rebels set sold poorly, hence their decision to not stock any of the line at all. If you remember the case with the last wave of Ultra Agents and Chima, this feels a little all too familiar.

  7. Chris says:

Great info – thanks for posting! Good to know I’ll be able to get the A-Wing eventually from TRU (despite their shitty prices).

I still think it’s strange that 75170 The Phantom is not coming to Australia. Was in Auckland recently for work and saw it in Farmers (major retail chain). Should have grabbed a couple while I was there, kicking myself now. Weird that it would go to NZ and not Australia though.

    • Jay says:

It’s insane. Lando probably accounts for half the value of the A-Wing set. Hopefully there’ll be a good sale soon. AU$70 for such a small set is crazy – I can’t wrap my head around who thought it would be a good idea to price it like that. Oh, that’s really interesting that NZ gets The Phantom! Maybe Rebels is a bigger deal there?

  8. Nick says:

I’m still flabbergasted by a RRP of $70 for 277 pieces for the Desert Skiff. What is going on? It’s the same for Luke’s Landspeeder.

Considering we could get sets like the Carbon Freezing chamber for around $30 on sale, why the MASSIVE price hike?

I love LEGO, and I love Star Wars even more, but I won’t be paying these stupid prices. I suppose it will be a cathartic process for me. Enjoying LEGO vicariously through others without it wreaking havoc on my bank account nor filling my shelf space.

    Cheerio.

    • Jay says:

That’s insane. The A-Wing price is equally as ridiculous as well.

I’m just glad I don’t really collect Star Wars sets – some of the set pricing is just a joke at this point. I can’t believe I once complained about Battle on Takodana being pricey last year. Compared against the A-Wing, it’s an absolute bargain.

Come to think of it, I only bought a single Rogue One set last year – the AT-ST. Everything else just seemed like poor value.

  9. Alison says:

Thanks for this writeup Jay. Do you know anything about the modulars – specifically Brick Bank and Assembly Square. In the past Myer has stocked the new modular just before the mid-year sales, I believe. And then it becomes available to other retailers a year or so after release (well at least I saw Detective’s Office appear at ShopForMe and I think it was early last year). Have you heard if there is likely to be any change to this plan?

    • Jay says:

No news yet with the modulars. I believe Brick Bank will still be with Myer, and the Assembly Square should also be at Myer sometime in April or May, just before the mid-year toy sale.

ShopForMe sources their modulars from other sources if I recall correctly.

  10. Anthony Christian says:

    Thanks for the info.

Personally can’t see the point of the 2 City sets being exclusives to any retailer.

    • Jay says:

Target and Toys R Us always seem to have one City exclusive – probably baked into their contract with LEGO. Too had the new 2017 LEGO City sets are boring.

  11. Anthony says:

Did you get any indication if the exclusives, and the Phantom, would be available at the Dreamworld store? Or down in Melbourne when they open?

Dreamworld is more relevant to me as it’s just down the road ^_^

    • Jonathan Wilson says:

I cant comment on any of the 2017 sets but I can confirm that the Dreamworld store does stock various of the 2016 retailer exclusive sets including the TRU exclusive Spider-Man Tanker Truck set, the Toyworld exclusive Dr Strange set and the K-Mart exclusive Batman set (the one with the half-built wooden door and spiral stairs). Plus they stock retailer exclusive D2C sets like the UCS Slave 1, UCS Tie, GBHQ and things like that. So its a good bet they will at some point stock the things that are otherwise retailer exclusives.
Whether they stock the Phantom (or other sets that aren’t otherwise slated for an Australian release at all) is a different matter. (and if there are reasons for the Phantom not coming to local retail other than just “it wont sell”, that may preclude sales at Dreamworld as well)

      • Jay says:

Yeah, Dreamworld essentially has every retailer exclusive. When I was there, I was hopeful that they would stock the sets that didn’t make it to the country (Rex’s AT-TE, Vader A-Wing set) but unfortunately they didn’t have them, so I don’t have high hopes that The Phantom will make it there.

    • Jay says:

No, The Phantom will not be ranged at all, so it won’t show up even in Dreamworld. Dreamworld should get the other exclusives! Hopefully Melbourne will get the same treatment with exclusives as well. So lucky that you’re so near to Dreamworld!

  12. Sarah says:

Thanks for the heads up on these Jay. My son has been saving all his pocket money and bday/Xmas money for the Arkham Asylum set. We were wondering why it wasn’t in any Aussie retailers yet. Anyhow after your post about the batman polybags he decided to go ahead and buy it via the lego store online. Now just excitedly waiting for the postman! Your posts often save me days traipsing around shops trying to track down sets that are limited release, so thank you.

    • Jay says:

You’re welcome, and I’m always happy to help people save time! The less time you spend running around trying to find sets, the more time you have to enjoy LEGO 🙂

I’d love to hear what your son thinks of the set!

  13. Ch(A)osproduction Limited says:

The BrickHeadz are on early acces for V.I.P members at Lego stores and ShopLEGO.com from 15-28 february.

  14. Steve says:

Not happy that most of the SW line are exclusives. Making the Brick Headz limited is also disappointing. Please keep us in the loop Jay.

    • Jay says:

Well, I don’t really collect Star Wars, so I’m quite safe from having to hunt down these exclusives. BrickHeadz is a pain – I was hoping to get them at retail, but now that I know that I have to wait, I just ordered the entire lot online.

  15. Michael says:

Worried about the Brickheadz not being available at retail – I want the lot, but was looking forward to buying them one by one as a ‘treat’. Also thought they could go gangbusters at retail – they’re basically LEGOs version of POPs, and at the same price too!

  16. LEGOfanblue says:

Thanks for the info Jay. I couldn’t find the Arctic Roller anywhere at my local KMart and I thought it might be an exclusive but it’s just sold out. It really doesn’t matter if the Arkham Asylum is an exclusive because buying it on LEGO.com would give you free shipping so no loss there

    • Jay says:

Yeah, the Arctic Roller has been selling really well. Most stores I’ve visited recently were also cleaned out. Guess its a testament to how well its designed.

Toys R Us occasionally have 20% (or better sales), so I guess I’ll hold out for that. Still tossing up whether I should get it or not. It’s just a bit too pricey for my tastes.

  17. Mark says:

The prices on those Star Wars sets are horrendous! $80 for 300 odd pieces on a very small A-wing and only 3 minifigs? No thanks.

  18. Rocky says:

I think you’ve got the wrong price for 70912 ARKHAM ASYLUM, it can’t possibly be AU$25.99!

  19. Ryan says:

To be honest Jay, with those handfuls of sets you listed above, who cares who has exclusive to those. Those are not in high demand anyway.

    • Jay says:

Maybe for the City and Nexo Knights, but the Star Wars sets will be in high demand, especially for those that missed out on the earlier iterations.

      • Hammerdragon says:

Yep, Landspeeder is one I’ve targeted for this year, although getting out to ToyWorld is always a pain for me, but needs must. The Phantom doesn’t jump out at me so not too disapoointed there. The Arkham Asylum looks interesting especially with the no. of minifigs. Did I count that right, 12?

Jay, do you have any update on when the Lego Ideas Old Fishing Store is likely to be released? This is No.1 item for me.

        • Jay says:

Oh, I’m not too sure if the Landspeeder is with Toyworld – I was just making a prediction! Arkham looks good, but I’ll hold out for a decent Toys R Us sale – no way I’m paying full price for it.

No news about the Old Fishing Store – an announcement is definitely imminent. I think we’ll find out closer to the end of the month.
