Review: Uniqlo LEGO Collection Season 2 T-Shirts

Just in time for the opening of the Legoland Discovery Centre in Melbourne (tomorrow!), Uniqlo have finally released their Second Season of LEGO T-shirts in Australia!

The Japanese clothing retailer first collaborated with LEGO last year for their first LEGO Collection, which saw the release of a whole new range of graphic t-shirts.

I’m a big fan of Uniqlo in general (probably more than half of my wardrobe is Uniqlo) and I’m kind of a bit of a LEGO enthusiast so this Uniqlo x LEGO collaboration is straight up my alley.

The new range of Uniqlo LEGO T-Shirts will retail for $19.99 and is available in all Uniqlo stores, and their online shop. Oh and Uniqlo are also having a promotion where every purchase of a LEGO T-Shirt at the Chadstone Uniqlo store gets you a $5 off voucher for the Legoland Discovery Centre.

I was a big fan of the first wave and some of the shirts, especially the Dark Blue one with the Ducks are in constant rotation in my wardrobe, but my main issue with the first season was that the adult male shirts were a bit too kiddy. 

I’m in my late 20s, and while I do like LEGO, most of the overly cartoonish ones from the first season were just not my style.

Season 2 of Uniqlo and LEGO’s collection has improved tremendously, and I picked up a few shirts to show them off for this quick review.

I uhh… usually review and photograph LEGO, so this entire thing was pretty awkward for me. I’m not really comfortable posing, but I have to give kudos to my wife for capturing these shots and making me not look goofy!

The LEGO Party Time shirt with 4 Mariachi Minifigures does qualify as a little kiddy, but I kinda like the juvenile vibe from it. Grey is also a pretty easy colour to fit into any wardrobe, which makes this a bit more versatile.

Also, who doesn’t love LEGO Mariachis? That said, this is probably the least favourite out of the bunch that I picked up and I’ll probably not be wearing this one as much as the others.

This shirt with the 5 coloured 2 x 2 bricks is one of my favourites when I first saw it, but was kinda flawed. Again, I liked how clean this one looked. It’s just a plain black shirt with some LEGO bricks tastefully strewn across the front. Very unassuming but is still something quite stylish that you can use to broadcast that you like LEGO.

I was ready to pick this as my favourite one of the bunch, but then I discovered the bright multi-coloured brick-text at the back which kind dampened my interest in the shirt.

“Five Small Brick Steps” sounds like a pretty random phrase and it contradicts how clean the shirt looks like from the front.

It’s a bit of a shame as I’m not a fan of t-shirts with printing on the back. I will try and experiment with removing the text on the back – if I can pull it off without destroying the shirt, this will definitely enter my rotation of casual t-shirts.

Have I mentioned that I like plain shirts with clean designs? I’m quite a fan of this white one with the small pocket that says “Fish and Bricks”. There’s a small illustration right above the pocket of a LEGO Fish & Chips Store owner which is cute, but it doesn’t completely overpower the entire shirt.

Last but not least is my favourite t-shirt out of the entire Second Season, and one that I’m going to wear as much as possible. I absolutely love this black shirt with the minifigure silhouettes and the subtle gradient as it progresses from grey to white.

It’s clean and most of all has imagery of one of LEGO’s most iconic design elements and even manages to look quite “arty”.

I have a lot of black in my wardrobe, so this shirt fits in quite well with everything I own and most of all, I’m a big fan of its simplicity and the way it sleekly incorporates the LEGO Minifigure silhouette.

I didn’t buy the entire range as I was quite happy with the above 4 t-shirts, but I’m also eyeing the the shirt with the Large Minifigure Silhouette and the LEGO Fun one with the crocodile chasing down a minifigure.

I’m in no rush to get these and will probably wait for a sale and nab them if they get to $10-15.

So yeah, I’m pretty happy with the second season of LEGO x Uniqlo shirts. Definitely much more variety and the designs are a lot more suited to stuff I would actually wear out of the house. 

Again, it’s a bit of a bummer that there are no female t-shirts which are a huge oversight in my honest opinion, but I guess you could always put on a male shirt and no one will know the better.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any polybag promotions this time around which is kind of a bummer. I would also kill for a minifigure with the Uniqlo logo on its torso. I think if Uniqlo had collaborated with LEGO to produce exclusive minifigures and had given out with purchases of $50 or more, I (and many other LEGO fans) would be all over them. Maybe for Season 3?

Can’t quite comment on the kids shirts as they don’t fit me, but they do look pretty fun. If you have LEGO-obsessed kids, I’m pretty sure they would love some of the designs.

Uniqlo shirts are also made out of high quality fabrics and generally last for a long time, so sure, even if these are slightly more expensive than LEGO apparel from Kmart and Target, I feel that they’re totally worth the price based on the quality of the design and the material.
