LEGO 10257 Creator Carousel is the latest attraction at the LEGO fairground!

Prepare to be astounded by the majestic LEGO 10257 Creator Expert Carousel, the star attraction in your LEGO Fairground! This beautiful LEGO merry-go-round comes packed with a range of clever play features that is bound to make this one of the most exciting LEGO sets of 2017.

The LEGO Carousel is made out of 2,670 pieces and will retail for AU$ 299.99US $199.99 / CA $249.99 / DE 179.99€ / GBP £159.99 and DK 1499.00 DKK , with a release date of 1 June. I expect the Australian price to be $289.99 – the same as the Ferris Wheel.

The LEGO.com links are now live, so check them out for your respective countries and bookmark the link ahead of its release in June!

Update: The LEGO Creator Expert Carousel is now available for purchase for LEGO VIPs! Make sure you’re logged in to add the Carousel to your cart!

First of all, what can I say – this is such a stunning LEGO set, and a more than worthy addition to your LEGO Fairground. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your Fairground Mixer and Ferris Wheel, ensuring that the ever-expanding LEGO Fairground becomes more exciting each year with new rides.

10257 Carousel can almost be considered as a spiritual successor or remake of 10196 Grand Carousel, one of the most prized LEGO sets in history that’s incredibly out of reach for regular LEGO fans.

The average price for a new Grand Carousel on Bricklink is about AU$4,600, just in case you were wondering.

The Grand Carousel was released way back in 2009 and LEGO fans have been clamouring for either a re-issue, and I think the 2017 version will make LEGO fans incredibly happy.

I’m kinda glad that it’s not a 1:1 remake and that LEGO have employed a rich and very attractive colour scheme as well as all-new animal rides to give it an identity of its own.

What really stands out for me is the yellow textile canopy which goes very well against the light blue detailing and golden accents.

One of the highlights of the new 2017 LEGO Carousel is the brick-built animal rides. There are 5 rides for the minifigures to go on, comprising of a frog, (a very sad-looking)tiger, elephant, swan and a pink flamingo.

The original Grand Carouse only had horses and carriages – the animal rides here gives the Carousel a much more playful vibe.

Here’s the ticket booth where the ride operator sells tickets to go on the merry-go-round. A new element is the printed ticket tile which you can see in the photo above.

What really brings the Carousel to life is its defining feature – the ability for the rides to rotate. This is achieved by turning the crank that you see above on the right, which sees all the animals move up and down as they circle around the core of the carousel.

It’s a really beautiful and elegant effect that you’ll have to see it in the flesh by checking out the designer video below.

You can also motorise the Carousel by adding Power Functions if you’re not a fan of manually cranking it.

There are 7 minifigures included in the set, the ticket booth/ride operator, a small female child and her grandmother, and a family of 4.

One of the thing that really stands out with 10257 Carousel is its size. As you can see above, the set is impressively large, measuring over 12” (32cm) high, 14” (38cm) wide and 13” (35cm) deep.

In an incredible feat of LEGO design, the 2017 Carousel is almost the same size as the Grand Carousel. The Grand Carousel is 15.1″ (38.4cm) high, 15.1″ (38.4cm) wide and 13.8″ (35cm) deep – very, very close to the new Carousel.

Unfortunately, one of the most endearing features of the Grand Carousel, the sound brick which played carnival music did not make it to the new Carousel. This is kinda disappointing, as you’d usually associate merry-go-round music to carousels and the sound brick was what made the original Grand Carousel such a unique and charming set.

I can understand LEGO’s perspective of not including one to keep the cost low, and when the set only retails for US$199.99, it’s hard to argue against that. That said, I think an updated sound brick would’ve instantly made this an exceptional set.

I’m really excited about 10257 Carousel and cannot wait to get my hands on it. The Grand Carousel is a LEGO fan-favourite, and this one seems like a slight upgrade thanks to the contemporary design, fresh new colour scheme and clever use of LEGO elements for the tiny details.

It has all the hallmarks of a classic LEGO set and is going to be a really popular model once it hits the shops in June.

What are your thoughts on 10257 Carousel? I’d love to know what you think of this set in the comments section and if this is going on your to-buy list!

Is it possible to add a sound brick?
If so how? Where do you buy the brick?

  2. Belinda says:

Hi Jay – do you know if this will be available through retailers later this year?

  3. Dan says:

I love this new carousel. The motor they suggest makes it go around very fast. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to slow it down?? Do I need to get a different motor for it? Or is there way to adjust the speed?? Thanks

  4. Lisa says:

I called our Texas store and she said they’ll definitely have them in-store May 22nd as the VIP pre-release. The reason they’ve changed the website date is that they don’t know if they’ll have enough for “shop at home” buyers then.

  5. Tristan says:

    Hey jay,
Do you have any idea of the box dimentions?
    Thank you

    • Jay says:

Hey Tristan, sorry, I don’t know how big the box is. From what I can tell it looks almost the same as the Ferris Wheel, but a little shorter.

  6. Manny says:

On second thoughts, while I’m not such a fan of the varied animal designs (they’re just not classic to me) I could definitely see my kids loving the different animals and even fighting over who gets to ride on which one, so maybe the new one is growing on me.
Also I do note that the new one is not called ‘grand’ so maybe my comments were a bit hasty. I guess they were aiming at a new design, not just a remake of the old.

  7. Manny says:

I’ll never own the older one and probably won’t get the new one. But my thoughts:
    – I like the option of using a crank handle and don’t mind if it is extra for power functions, it’s a good play feature for kids (I think the crank box is why the dimensions aren’t square)
    – I like the swan in particular
    – I like the colour scheme and overall presentation
    – I always like your reviews Jay
    But
    – it isn’t as grand for me. I prefer the old fashioned horses, I haven’t seen colorful animals on a big carousel in real life
    – having less rides makes it look like a small ride overall in my view, I think that’s what makes it look smaller (and less grand), the carousel in the winter village had 4 rides from memory, so this one only has one more than that
    – I think having more rides possibly repeated and with even less animal designs would have been better, and more grand
    – I don’t know if the old one did better, but in the photos the way the figures sit on the animals and hold on to the pole just doesn’t quite look right to me

I think it is a nice set and not saying I could do better. But whereas the Ferris Wheel was a vast improvement on it’s predecessor, I’m not quite sure this one is to the same extent.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, the dimensions on the base really complements the round shape of the carousel.

I agree that it’s not “grand” but I don’t think it’s trying to be. Good point with the animals – I guess you could easily modify the rides and create your own animals would be cool.

And yeah, it’s definitely not an “improvement” over the original – that’s really hard to beat! This one is more a reinterpretation of a classic and I think it’s really nice to have some variety. Love the colours and it really pulls the entire build together.

  8. Andrew says:

Interesting how the carousel is the same price in the US as the UCS snowspeeder, at$199. But the Snowspeeder is $30 more than the carousel here in Australia.

  9. Warmongurl says:

I wasn’t aware of the Grand Carousel set until reading your post. I find this one preferable. I’m a sucker for yellow and it looks marvelous with the blue and gold elements. Also, the animal rides are a lot of fun. Probably won’t be getting this set, I’ve got a UCS snowspeeder and assorted other sets to spend my Lego budget on 🙂

    • Jay says:

I don’t have the original but yeah, this colour scheme is much nicer! Don’t forget the rumored UCS Millennium Falcon to save for!

  10. Luke says:

The size is baffling. Its a circle shaped carousel on an octagonal base so no matter how you measure it should have the same width as depth but it’s 38cm wide and 35cm deep.

The pictures make it look smaller than it should be in actuality. Based on the official pictures I thought it was much smaller than the given measurements, but the designer video showed it more accurately scaled.

It looks worth the $300 to me, all things considered.

  11. Kay says:

This is such an amazing piece of news!! I was never going to be able to afford the original at its inflated price. Can’t wait to get this!

Very very exciting and it’s prob the set of the year for me even ahead of the rumoured UCS MF!

And the significant difference will keep those who have the original happy enough. Lego is starting a good trend to re-release updated highly sought after retired sets from the past! Hope they keep this up!

    • Jay says:

Yeah! The small Carousel that we got in the Winter Village Market was a nice small alternative, but I’m glad that we got the real deal here!

The different look to the original is also key like you mentioned. They must’ve learned from the Winter Toy Shop remake, which was almost the same as the original.

  12. Dean says:

Bought the 10196 from David Jones for AUD$400 in 2009, and sold it just last week for a much reduced price – $1500. It was a prized item in the collection, but new house, less display space, meant I had to part with it for much less than anticipated.

  13. Barry says:

Looks good although the colour scheme looks like the big wheel. All that bluish grey, I’m going to have to swap out the colour if a can. Apart from that, I interested in buying it

  14. Marsha says:

I just love it! Maybe Lego could release a sound brick option as it would make it even more special.

    • Jay says:

I think developing and manufacturing a sound brick would be way too expensive for LEGO, which is why they didn’t do it. It would’ve probably inflated the price too much had they did, but yeah, here’s hoping there are 3rd party options!

  15. Ronny says:

Oh goodie, finally an other addition to the fairground theme. Will definitely get one! 🙂 as I haven’t got the Grand Carousel.

    • Jay says:

Yeah! I haven’t won the lottery so I was never going to pay for the Grand Carousel. Now, all I need is the Ferris Wheel before I get this one!

      • Andrew says:

Hey jay, if you’re looking for a Ferris wheel, shopforme.com.au has had them at 20% off for about 3-4 weeks now, I picked one up for about $230 about 3 weeks ago.

        • Jay says:

Ah I’m personally not a fan of shopforme, but that seems like a great price!

          • Andrew says:

Oops, sold out now, wasn’t when I posted earlier,
Was my first purchase from them, had no problems, so I would do it again, paid with PayPal as I wasnt sure about them.
They seem to have a few new items that were retailer only exclusives, eg red city train, UCS tie fighter, even Silent Mary was on sale the other day.

            • Jay says:

Ahh cool. Hope you enjoy the set! Yeah, this year, the Red Cargo Train and UCS Tie Fighter rolled out to independent stores (like Toyworld, Shopforme etc). Silent Mary is a general release this year.
