PREVIEW: LEGO Batman Movie Summer 2017 sets

Continuing on from my LEGO City Jungle set preview, here’s a brief look at the upcoming LEGO Batman Movie sets that are due to be released in Summer (Winter here in Australia).

The sets are already loaded onto LEGO.com and have a release date of 1 June 2017, so it’s only a matter of days away now!

There are 5 new LEGO Batman Movie sets that will follow the massive run of sets from earlier this year. The remaining sets seek to fill in any gaps, whether they’re vehicle or characters that didn’t make into the first wave of LEGO Batman Movie sets.

It’s quite a small run of sets, but what they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in terms of price and piece count. With prices ranging from US$14.99 / AU$22.99 to US$139.99 / AU$229.99, there’s a pretty big variance in terms of how these sets are priced.

Here’s a rundown of all the new LEGO Batman Movie sets and some of my preliminary thoughts on them!

LEGO Batman Movie Summer 2017 Sets

70913 Scarcrow Fearful Face-off
Pieces: 141
Minifigures: 2- Batman, Scarecrow

Price/Buy:

Team up with Batman™ to stop Scarecrow™ spreading fear in this action-packed THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE: Scarecrow™ Fearful Face-off set. The Gyro-Copter features 2 spinning rotors, an adjustable rudder and 2 bomb-drop functions to drop the included fear gas bomb elements. Attach Batman’s jetpack with Batwings and adjustable boosters, and arm him with the grappling gun to role-play an aerial battle. The set also features a power plant mini build with an explode function for added jeopardy, plus 2 minifigures.

Scarecrow Fearful Facce-off is the small, accessible set of the Summer wave and features Scarecrow in his proper costume, instead of the Pizza Delivery version that we got in the previous wave.

It’s a small set, so there doesn’t seem much here – there’s a small rickety-looking gyrocopter piloted by Scarecrow that drops poison gas bombs, but apart from that there isn’t anything particularly noteworthy.

We do get a small section of the power plant, which can be connected to the other power plant mini builds from 70910 Scarecrow Special Delivery, 70901 Mr Freeze Ice Attack and 70900 Joker Balloon Escape.

Personally, I’m not too excited by this one. Batman’s black batwings are a nice accessory and I do like Scarecrow’s minifigure design, but because it looks quite similar to the one from 76054 Scarecrow Harvest of Fear, it’s not that high on my priority list, especially with so many other great sets coming out.

Hype Score: 1/5 – Other than the Scarecrow minifigure, there’s nothing much that draws me into this set.

70914 Bane Toxic Truck Attack
Pieces: 366
Minifigures: 2- Batman, Mutant Leader
Bigfigs: 1 – Bane

Price/Buy:

Stop Bane™ and Mutant Leader’s toxic attacks with Batman™ in this exciting THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE: Bane™ Toxic Truck Attack set, including Bane’s Toxic Truck, Batman’s Whirly-Bat flyer and a toxic waste mini-build with explode function. The 6-wheel truck features rear 4-wheel suspension and a mounted 6-stud rapid shooter and detachable toxic tank element. Includes 2 minifigures, a big figure and assorted play-inspiring weapons and accessory elements including Batman’s Batarang, Mutant Leader’s torch and Bane’s Venom backpack.

70914 Bane Toxic Truck Attack is probably one of the more exciting sets in this wave, purely because of the Bane Bigfig, which has been a long time coming! The Bigfig looks terrific and as a LEGO DC Super Heroes fan, I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally have an appropriately sized Bane.

The Mutant Leader minifig is also a nice addition, especially for completionist DC fans but this set could really use another minifigure or two, especially for one that commands a relatively high price.

Bane’s Toxic Truck does look kinda neat, if a little undersized for a set that costs this much. Speaking of cost, I do expect a bit more out of a set that costs US$50/AU$90 – the other models in this set look pretty lacklustre.

Yes, I do know that Bigfigs cost a premium but this set’s incredibly high price is going to be hard to justify. I’m still going to begrudgingly buy it because I’m a sucker for BigFigs.

Hype Score: 3/5 – I’m very excited about the Bane Bigfig – he looks absolutely amazing. Shame that the set’s price is a little on the high side.

70915 Two-Face Double Demolition
Pieces: 564
Minifigures: 4 – Batman, Two-Face, 2x GCPD Officers

Price/Buy:

Stop the mighty Two-Face™ Excavator with Batman’s Batcycle in this thrilling THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE: Two-Face™ Double Demolition set. The Two-Face Excavator has a minifigure cabin, operational excavator arm and bucket, articulated design for smooth steering. It might look like a normal digger from one side, but check out the ‘bad side’ featuring spikes on the huge wheels and a 6-stud rapid shooter. The Batcycle features an opening minifigure cockpit, rotating double stud shooter and rotating flick missile shooter. The set includes 4 minifigures who are equipped with assorted weapons and accessories to inspire endless action-packed role-play scenarios.

70915 Two-Face Double Demolition is yet another awfully priced LEGO Batman Movie set that contains a coveted minifigure – this time, it’s Two-Face. Don’t get me wrong, the Two-Face minifigure design looks exceptional, but is it really worth paying US$60/AU$100 just to get him?

Probably not.

To be fair, the set does have a big more going for it than say the Bane Toxic Truck set. For one, I’m really fascinated by the Excavator, which has a fascinating two-sided design, much like Two-Face. It’s probably one of the most creative and unique vehicles in the entire LEGO Batman Movie theme and looks like the designers really put a lot of thought into its design.

We also get a very Tron Light Cycle-inspired Batvehicle, the “Bat Hawk”which does look pretty neat.

The other minifigures are a bit of a letdown, for a set that’s priced on the higher side of things. Two nameless GCPD Officers won’t really set the world on fire. The addition o Condiment King and/or Gentleman Ghost would’ve helped make this set’s high pricetag a lot more palatable.

Unless I can get this set at 40% off, I’ll probably just Bricklink Two-Face and be done with it.

Hype Score: 2/5 – I really like Two-Face’s design, but I don’t like him enough to drop $100 on him

70916 The Batwing
Pieces: 1053
Minifigures: 3 – Batman, Robin, Harley Quinn

Price/Buy:

Fly high above Gotham City in the Batwing and battle against Harley Quinn™ with Batman™ and Robin™ in this cool THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE: The Batwing set. The Batwing features an opening dual minifigure cockpit for Batman and Robin, rotating boosters, adjustable wings for flight and landing modes, 2 spring-loaded shooters, 2 disc shooters and an opening rear compartment with a car inside. Harley Quinn has a mobile cannon with a 6-stud rapid shooter. Includes 3 minifigures with weapons and accessory elements including Batman’s Batarang and Harley’s hammer.

I’m actually really excited about 70916 The Batwing because it looks absolutely massive. From what I’ve seen of this set online from the US where some stores have started selling this set early, the scale of this model is just unbelievable.

It measures about 53cm (20″) wide which is just insane when you think about it. The Batwing also had a lot of screentime in the LEGO Batman Movie, and the set’s design looks to stay very true to the on-screen version which is yet another plus.

The minifigure selection is probably the only disappointing department of this set – 3 minifigures for such a pricey set just seems odd. Sure, you get a fantastic and excusive Harley Quinn minifigure with her new two-tone tutu, but this set is just crying out for more villains such as Gentleman Ghost, Condiment King, or even some alternate Batman costumes.

That said, sets that are primarily designed to be great display pieces always get good scores in my books, so I’ll definitely be picking this one – preferably when it goes on sale.

Hype Score: 3/5 – The Batwing’s sheer scale and size is reason enough to pick this set up. I also think the price is quite fair for what you’re getting.

70917 The Ultimate Batmobile
Pieces: 1456
Minifigures: 8 – Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Alfred, 2x Flying Monkeys, Polka Dot Man, Wicked Witch of the West

Price/Buy:

Team up with THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE characters Batman™, Batgirl™, Robin™ and Alfred Pennyworth™ (in Batsuit) to give the Super-Villains quadruple trouble with The Ultimate Batmobile! This amazing model divides into 4 separate vehicles: the Batmobile, Batwing, Bat-Tank and Batcycle. The Batmobile features foldout boosters and 4 stud shooters, while the Batwing has foldout wings and 2 spring-loaded shooters. The Batcycle has foldable wheels and the heavily-armored Bat-Tank boasts 2 hidden 6-stud rapid shooters. The set also includes the rotating Bat-Signal with a LEGO® light brick, Polka-Dot Man’s flying disc, plus 8 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories to inspire endless role-play action.

70917 The Ultimate Batmobile ventures into UCS-territory when it comes to pricing, but with a fantastic design and an army of minifigures, I believe that this set fully deserves its Ultimate title.

If you’ve read my post when The Ultimate Batmobile was first announced, my excitement for this set still stands and I think it’s more than deserving of being the flagship set of the entire LEGO Batman Movie theme.

After seeing more of this set in action, including the play feature where the Batmobile splits into 4 separate vehicles, this set well and truly combines great playability with a nice-looking design.

It’s also suitably large, which means that it’ll look fantastic on display and you get a really diverse cast of minifigures to further enhance The Ultimate Batmobile’s appeal.

I also think that given what you get, the set’s pricetag is not too crazy, although I will probably not buy this at full-price and wait for a suitable sale before pulling the trigger on this one.

It’s campy and looks like a lot of fun, which is all you can really ask for from a LEGO set.

Hype Score: 4/5 – The biggest, baddest Batmobile is going to be hard to resist. Plus, flying monkeys!

That’s it for my preview of the new LEGO Batman Movie sets that are going on sale on 1 June 2017!

Overall, outside of The Batwing and Ultimate Batmobile, I’m not overly impressed with the sets this time around – they all seem to be poor value for money, especially since they’re going to be competing with the likes of new Star Wars Ep 8 sets, Ninjago Movie, LEGO City Jungle  and lord knows what else LEGO have up their sleeves for 2017.

I have all the time in the world to wait for some good sales before springing on these sets, but I’ll most likely get some of them and Bricklink what I don’t have to save money.

I’d love to know what you think about the new Summer LEGO Batman Movie sets. Let me know in the comments if you’re particularly excited about any of these sets and if you’re going to be picking any of these up when they go on sale!

Thanks for reading!

Regarding the Two-Face set, I bought it FOR the nameless GCPD officers. But I also liked the nameless LexCorp minions, the Two-Face henchmen and the Chief O’Hara battle pack. I even Bricklinked some extra Riddler torsos and Penguin suit guys so the Riddler and Penguin could get in on the henchmen fun.

  2. Matthew says:

Thanks Jay that is a great review

Any idea when these will be available in stores in Aus? It is my son’s birthday at the end of the month and I know he is keen to get the batwing. We are just back from the UK where they were in store on the 1st of June and assumed they would be here but haven’t seen them. I was hoping to pick it up in one of the 20% off sales.

    Thanks

    Mat

  3. Taliesin says:

Were you aware of the not advertised Speed Champions model? 75880 McLaren 720S. Found it today at Big W, one day before the official launch!

  4. Taylor says:

I’m planning to get the Ultimate Batmobile as well, though where would you find it on sale? It’s a D2C set, so it’ll only be on official Lego store shelves. And Lego itself doesn’t run many sales.

  5. Hey Jay have you seen the set list for the upcoming DC Superheroes sets in 2018? SO HYPED! (You must be too cos you’re a DC fan 😀 )

    https://vaderfan2187.wordpress.com/2017/05/30/lego-dc-superheroes-2018-set-list/

  6. Rychu Supadude says:

Pumped for Bane! His truck will look great next to my Hulk/Red Hulk set. But Condiment King has to be the most glaring omission out of all the villains in the movie!

  7. Warmongurl says:

I’m definitely getting the Ultimate Batmobile! Neat design with four vehicles becoming one, plus fun minifigs! Alfred looks awesome in his battle outfit 🙂 I like the Bane BigFig and will probably get the set for him if I find it 30% off (very likely on Amazon at some point). I also like the Two-Face minifig and am really intrigued by his cleverly designed vehicle. Not sure I’ll buy the set though. Hope a couple of these sets show up in future reviews on your site!

  8. Chris L says:

Great preview Jay. Don’t think i can stretch tje lego budget for these. Might just gran some of the minifigs.

    • Jay says:

Same here! With the LEGO Ninjago Movie sets looming too, my bank balance isn’t going to be in good shape come Christmas!

  9. Jeb says:

These sets do look cool, but i can’t really afford them unless i get them for my birthday, and I’m getting Ninjago movie stuff then :/

    • Jay says:

The Ninjago Movie stuff is really exciting. I can see myself getting distracted by them. Or I’ll just make poor financial decisions, haha.

  10. Hammerdragon says:

For me TLBM sets have been disappointing primarily due to the price. Whilst I accept license fees have to be paid, I still find the fact that the minimum you can expect to pay for a half decent set is over $60. The other thing that has got my goat is the over stocking in nearly every shop you go in. Considering not everyone is after these, the fact that most stores have dedicated so much space to them at the expense of so much other Lego is now seriously starting to annoy me! Enough already!

    • Jay says:

I think pricing overall is just a new normal that we have to begrudgingly get to. LEGO’s financial success in recent years is no doubt a contributing factor – they have to somehow keep up their record-breaking revenue numbers so why not raise prices and increase distribution.

There’s definitely an oversupply here in Australia, especially since it feels like the LEGO Craze is beginning to wane. It’s probably good news for us collectors as that means retailers aggressively discounting sets to clear the shelves!

  11. Karrakazul says:

The Batwing and Ultimate Batmobile are definitely the stars of this wave, the other vehicles are serviceable, but compared to the villain vehicles we’ve already had they’re a little lacklustre. Seems they’ve had trouble finding thematically appropriate styles of vehicle for Two Face and Bane, when you think Two Face is an excavator what comes to mind? Most of the first wave was chock full of extra villains so it is a shame we’re only getting two this wave, though I hear rumour of a third wave with vehicles for Harley and Egghead, so fingers crossed for a Double-Decker Couch style character pack set to make up for it.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, an evil Double Decker couch would be fantastic! Can’t wait for the rumoured Third Wave. I need a Condiment King minifig in my life.

I think with the vehicles, they got to experiment a little, especially with two-face. The two-tone excavator is a really unique concept and I’m glad the design team got to flex their creative muscle with it. Given that they barely got any screentime, I guess there wasn’t much scrutiny on the actual fit. Maybe it’s a reference to a really obscure comic book issue?

  12. Mark says:

I don’t get the timing of the Lego Batman movie sets, at least in this country. The first wave was released months before the theatrical release (not TLGs fault) and now there is a glut of those sets clogging retailers shelves. With the second wave’s imminent release the hype train has well and truly moved on. The Ultimate Bat Mobile is a cool set and looks to be what Benny’s Spaceship was to the Lego movie. But I can’t help think it would have sold much better months ago, especially given the high price. ?

    • Warmongurl says:

I think they are timed for the DVD release of the Lego Batman movie on June 13.

    • Jay says:

They’re probably emulating the release pattern of The LEGO Movie. Unfortunately, they probably didn’t quite predict LEGO Batman Movie underperforming at the box office, but product releases get decided years back.

Also probably banking on the Christmas shopping frenzy which is when LEGO makes most of their money. It’s going to be pretty competitive especially with The Last Jedi sets vying for our money. And also the rumoured UCS Falcon!

  13. Michael says:

Very excited for the Batmobile, will pick up Scarecrow because I don’t have him yet, and would love the Batwing on special.

Do we know if the Batmobile will be coming to stores? Is it an exclusive?

  14. Helen MacDonald says:

Hey Jay. First off I really like the reviews you do. They give me all the details I need to help me make informed decisions about my purchases. And I like the way your page is set out too. I agree the Batman sets are a bit pricey. But I really must hve the Ultimate Bat mobile. And the Bat Wing. What I love about these sets, is that they remind me of the 1960s Batman TV show. (I’m showing my age). They are nice display pieces too. Looking forward to Sooo many great sets coming out here in down under NZ. Keep up the great work. Helen

    • Jay says:

Thanks Helen! That’s really nice of you to say that – helping people make better decisions when it comes to LEGO is a big part of why I do what I do, and I also make it a point to ensure my site is as readable as possible!

The Ultimate Batmobile seems like a universal winner – everyone loves it!

  15. Thanks for this Jay, I pretty much agree with you… however why did you only post this now? I thought pics of the sets have been floating around for quite some time?

  16. Grimm says:

Nice review Jay, thank you. I have to disagree with you on the two face and bane sets however. When I purchased the sets I thought god damn those are expensive. But then the build started and I gotta say, the twoface bucket truck is a crazy fun build. The bane truck was a solid fun build and of course the bat wizypop!!! By far the greatest bat vehicle of all time. I honestly thought I was buying these sets for the Minifigures, but after the builds were completed I found myself cleaning off my showcase mantle for these vehicles. I just want to touch on the monster of this lot the ultimate bat mobile set which looks great and for the money ? I’d choose this set over the batwing set but strictly for that exclusive Alfred the butt ler ? Minifigure. Also pokadot man. Wishing we could get condiment man and gentleman ghost but I highly doubt a wave 3 for TLBM. Thanks Jay

    • Jay says:

Oh that’s really encouraging to hear! These observations are purely from the official images, so it’s really nice to hear that they’re a lot better in person. That got my hopes up slightly and I will be more than happy to have my mind changed when I get them!

I agree, Ultimate Batmobile over Batwing any day. Apparently there are rumours swirling that we’ll get a Wave 3 next year. Here’s hoping for an evil version of the Double Decker Couch with all the villains they left out! Oh and Phyllis too!

  17. Sgoteam says:

Woah!!! These sets look so nice, I wish I can just grab them from these pictures!

Scarecrow’s Minifigure looks nice, and I like the chopper.

I’m really excited for Bane’s Bigfig, and the Mutant Leader looks like a Zombie Cyclops that I can use when I have free time and want to do some stopmotion videos.

I really agree that Two-Face Double Demolition or The Batwing should have one or two more villains like Captain Boomerang, Egghead, Crazy Quilt, Killer Moth, Doctor Phosphorus, Dr. Hugo Strange, Gentleman Ghost or Clock King. I’ll also settle for those villains from other series like a Daleks or some Gremlins or a new version for Lord Vampyre, The Mummy, and the Swamp Creature, or the Kraken, Medusa, Agent Smith, a great white shark, or even a Tyrannosaurus or a Velociraptors from Jurassic Park.

It would also be really cool to see a gigantic King Kong and a gigantic Sauron in a set. Or we might be able to see Phyllis in a set!

And finally, I will most definitely buy the Ultimate Batmobile, because… WHO THE HELL WON’T?!?!?!?!?

    • starwarsfolder12 says:

      Me. I won’t. Too expensive. 😛

    • Haha, that Ultimate Batmobile is irresistable.

    • Jay says:

Yeah Mutant Leader looks lowkey cool. Bane was always going to be a winner, so I really hope the truck is a lot better in the flesh than the image photos.

Apparently there are rumours that those villains will be showing up in sets next year. If they release an Agent Smith minifig, I will be SO happy.

Don’t tease me about Sauron. I’m still very salty that we still don’t have a Sauron minifig, with LOTR being my favourite theme of all time and all that.
