LEGO reveals 70620 Ninjago City, the massive modular Ninjago Movie set!

Earlier today, LEGO unveiled their flagship Ninjago Movie Set, 70620 Ninjago City, a gargantuan 4,827 piece multi-level model that’s absolutely breathtaking.

The Ninjago City set depicts a sizeable chunk of the sprawling metropolis showed off in the movie trailer. The release date for 70620 Ninjago City is 1 September 2017, with a VIP release in mid-August very likely.

Ninjago City is priced at:

At first glance, the price is a a little shocking – qualifying as the most expensive Ninjago set ever, but as you’re getting almost 5,000 pieces, I’d hazard to say this set represents exceptional value for the price. Oh, this also makes this the 3rd largest LEGO set ever by piece count, just behind the UCS Millennium Falcon and Taj Mahal.

On to the set itself, it’s safe to say that I’m in love. It’s quite possibly the most beautiful set designed by LEGO and I’m going to say that this will take the cake as the best LEGO set released this year.

I really love the gorgeous blend of traditional and modern Japanese architectural influences on the multi-level structure. It gives off a very neo-Tokyo vibe and is absolutely bursting with vibrancy and character.

I’m going to call this set for what it is – it’s a Ninjago-themed modular even though non of the marketing materials explicitly mentioned it. It’s got all the key elements of a modular building from the footprint of the baseplate, the multi-model design and detailed designs both on the exterior and interior.

It’s definitely going to be compatible with an existing modular street set-up, as evidenced by the slots you see above which allows Ninjago City to connect to with other modulars.

The first level of Ninjago City features a traditional fish market, house, a bridge over a stream, and a fishing boat. There are plenty of intricate details such as bridge, sewer outlet, stream with translucent-blue and translucent-green water elements, sliding elevator with room for a minifigure, traditional fish market with fish and crab elements, house with dining room and bedroom with sliding screen doors and foldout ‘solar panels’, Sweep the maintenance robot’s service station with assorted tool elements, and a taxi stand with telephone element.

The second level of the model is  a modern fashion store with 2 mannequins and assorted NINJAGO® product elements, a construction site with a bonsai tree, a comic book store with brick-built sign, cashier desk, comic book stand with assorted elements including collectible NINJAGO training cards, a crab restaurant with brick-built crab entrance sign and oven with ‘crab-grilling’ function, a cash-dispensing ATM, 15 bank note elements (ATM can dispense up to 13), and a movie poster display stand with 4 interchangeable movie poster elements.

The third level features a radio tower, modern rooftop sushi bar with sushi conveyor belt function and brick-built food, bathroom with sliding door, and brick-built puffer fish and squid sculptures, Lloyd Garmadon and Misako’s apartment with an opening window, bunk bed, kitchen unit and attic space for the Green Ninja Suit minifigure.

Any good city scene should be bursting with life and Ninjago City doesn’t disappoint with a whopping 16 minifigures included in the set:

Jay, Kai and Lloyd Garmadon (each with new-for-August-2017 high school outfit decoration), Green Ninja Suit, Misako, Jamanakai Villager, Sally, Ivy Walker, Konrad, Severin Black, Tommy, Guy, Juno, Mother Doomsday, Shark Army Gunner and Officer Noonan, plus Sweep the maintenance robot.

I’m pretty speechless. Half because I know I’ll be $500 poorer in September, but mostly because I’m incredibly excited about 70620 Ninjago City. Kudos to the LEGO Design Team for managing to surprise Modular Fans by sneaking in this pseudo-modular into the LEGO Ninjago Movie theme.

I also think it’s really funny that this dwarfs the Assembly Square’s piece count, which was released to celebrate a decade of Modular Buildings.

What are your thoughts on the set? Do you think it qualifies to be considered a Modular Building? Let me know in the comments section!

  1. NoBricksOnMe says:

Fun fact Jay. Do you remember the minifigure that the real life kid is holding at the shop at the very first scene of the movie. That’s that exact same Lloyd minifig. I have it, but not from Ninjago City, from Ninjago City Chase. I only noticed it two days ago when I watched the movie again, and I was like, “oh my gosh!”

  2. David says:

Just now working on Ninjago City. LEGO has separated this into many multiple groups of tiles so that hunting is reduced to a minimum and so far there are no really tricky assembly points. This is going to one of the heavier constructions but fortunately the base if fairly small so there is minimal opportunity for things to come apart when it is moved. The detail is amazing.

  3. Irene says:

I bought it, can’t resist this! I have built it, thinking about waiting for my son to grow up and build it with him.

  4. Tricia Patricco says:

Got ours this morning! This set is AMAZING!!

  5. Seb says:

Why does everyone say that Jay is in the high school outfit? It’s pretty obvious he’s not.

  6. LegoLover says:

I think ot will be considered a modular building. One question, Jay.You say that Kai Lloyd and Jay have High School uniform, yet,I don’t see Jays High School outfit.

My mom would never let me buy this.I jist got the lego McLaren 72OS.I want that set,Lloyds Mecha Dragon and either the bounty or the Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon

  7. Reid says:

I haven’t seen this posted yet but early VIP access begins August 16th in NA.

  8. Ben Kloepper says:

Nice to see them *finally* using transparent flat tiles (over plate piece/s) to represent water instead of the opaque light blue the’ve tended to use in the past. I hope they start doing this in smaller sets too. Love the cherry blossom tree too (though it almost looks like “Hello, Kittythulhu!).

  9. JJ says:

Why the heck is it selling for $499 AUD?! That’s too expensive compare to USD!! Anyone knows if US official Lego site do international shipping?

    • Jay says:

I think the price is okay, considering the number of parts and how well its designed. Unfortunately, not a lot of US retailers do international shipping but maybe sites like Barnes and Noble will carry it and ship internationally.

    • Seb says:

In New Zealand, we have international shipping tax for anything over $400. This cost $600 on the Lego Shop site. ?

  10. Colby says:

If I lived in Australia, I wouldn’t be able to afford this? Did anyone notice in the middle, near the chef, there is a gold sensei hat and two of those gray Star Wars jet packs on the sides( the ones from the battle packs). Also the river has a canopy made out of TONS of crowbars. That’ll take a few minutes to put them all on. I am so excited for this set!?

    • Jay says:

The crowbars are really cool, it really gives it some awesome bit of texture. The tiny details really make this set and I absolutely can’t wait to get it to discover all these little secrets.

  11. Josh says:

I’ve never bought any Nijago before as it hasnt really grabbed my attention, but this looks amazing! I’ve just started getting into modulars (got the Petshop and thinking about getting assembly square tonight on sale from Myer). That price tag is pretty full on but I’m not surprised given the piece count and intricasy of it.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, I think the best part about this set is how they’ve managed to un-Ninjago it, which is pretty damn impressive. There’s nothing kiddy about it, its just a well designed set all around that just so happens to have some Ninjago references.

Go for the Assembly Square! don’t forget to use Anniversary20! $300 for it isn’t too shabby!

  12. Colby says:

This will look great next to the Disney castle, classic bat cave , metal beards sea cow, and Death Star ? The detail is AMAZING, and has a ton of little itty bitty details. The minifigs are mostly reused parts, which is a shame☹️ Waiting for the bride and groom. ‘ help I’m stuck ‘!??

  13. Cole says:

Has anyone seen a complete rear view (all four levels)?

  14. Reed Mitchell says:

I would get this set, but it doesn’t fit with other modulars, with the raised sidewalk and river.

    • Jay says:

True, but I think you can be quite creative to build your own connecting plot to merge them both together. Great time to introduce some waterfront property to your modular street!

  15. B says:

So I’ve been wondering since the reveal of this, do you think that we’ll see more modular Ninjago to add on to this or not? We’re clearly getting more sets later on, so would there be any smaller, or even larger sets to expand on this.

    • arkanana says:

no, this will be the only ninjago modular set.

    • Jay says:

I don’t think so – this is clearly just a once-off from LEGO. There will definitely be a second wave of LEGO Ninjago Movie sets in early 2018, but I doubt anything at this scale will ever be created again, specifically for the Ninjago Movie.

  16. I love lego! says:

One of the pieces kind of looks like a fidget spinner???

  17. Mark says:

Whoa! The first ten Ninjago collectible blind bag minifigs have been revealed and they are amazing! I can’t take any more of this Ninjago goodness.

  18. Tim says:

Dammit. My new years resolution for 2017 was to dive into Bricklink and slowly start collecting all the parts I need for the first three modulars to complete my collection. It’s already halfway through the year and I haven’t even started. Lego just keep releasing too many good sets. At the beginning of the year I’d managed to reduce my ‘Most Wanted List’ down to one set. That didn’t last long. Silent Mary, Carousel, Old Fishing Store, Saturn V and now this… I’m not even bothering with regular Lego anymore, too many jumbo sized sets to make room (in my wallet) for.

    • Jay says:

I haven’t been able to afford to Bricklink this year! It used to be a decent chunk of LEGO spend, heh!

Don’t forget, there’s a LEGO train on the way too. Wouldn’t be surprised if that one is another spectacular design.

      RIP wallet.

      • Daniel says:

Whoa! I haven’t heard that rumour. How confirmed is that? Will it be an Advanced Model like the Horizon Express, Maersk or Emerald Night? That’s seriously exciting!

        • Jay says:

haha that’s because it’s a personal rumour perpetuated by yours truly. LEGO releases a train each year and now that we know what’s coming in the second half of the year, a train seems to be conspicuously missing. So yeah, I definitely think LEGO have a little train up their sleeves!

  19. Warmongurl says:

At first, it didn’t grab me at all. As I read through your preview and saw it broken out per level (especially the bottom one with the bridge, water, boat & vegetation) I got intrigued. Still, feel like I need to see the set in person to get a feel for it. Definitely not a must buy at this point, though that’s not bad. There is a list of other sets across various themes vying for my attention. Plus the mirage of the UCS Falcon….

    • Jay says:

I swear, the UCS Falcon is holding everyone hostage at this point. LEGO should just come out and say, yes we’re releasing a Falcon just to end the speculation and help us plan our finances!

  20. Andy says:

Seriously!!!!! How much disposable income does the Lego group think we all have.
Just picked up assembly square, and temple of airjitzu in the last month.
Also hoping to get UCS Snowspeeder, and The old fishing store this year.
I think I’m going to miss getting many of the smaller sets, ninjago, and star wars episode 8 sets later this year.
All I can say is damn, that’s the sexiest set I have ever seen. EVER!

thank goodness I didn’t race of to big w early today to pick up that silent Mary this morning, because I would bee poor AF.

    • Jay says:

At this rate, LEGO is just continuously testing us to see how far we’ll budge. Won’t be surprised if the UCS Millennium Falcon gets priced at AU$1000, just for the fun of it.

Yeah, I definitely have to sacrifice some of the smaller sets to afford all the gems LEGO keeps putting out this year.

Dude, I paid full retail for Silent Mary. I have so many regrets about that one.

      • Rumors are that the UCS MF will be $800 USD which means it will likely be more than AU$1000.

      • Andrew says:

Seriously, I thought full price was not in the vocabulary af an Afol collector.
Especially seeing that Lego are jacking up the price on sets these days,
I reckon even the resellers are having a hard time keeping up, they probably think that if people are prepared to pay twice as much for a set than the RRP, then why not get a slice of it themselves.
My local Myer had 3 different hard to find sets on shelves a week after their toy sale started,
Same time last year they would have sold out within the first hour.
Even toys r us had a one day 20% off sale, 6 months ago this woluld have wiped out their third to find sets, but this time they still seem to be fully stocked.
Which is great as I don’t have to seem to work as hard to get the stuff I want.

        • Daniel says:

30% is the new 20%. Places like Shopforme.com.au seem to use 20% off as their base price and discount more from there for sales. It makes me suspect that wholesale prices are at least 50% less, which may explain why LEGO takes up such a large section of Toy Departments.

        • Jay says:

yeah, I almost never buy LEGO sets at full price, unless I absolutely NEED them now, which is not ever.

We’ve also been spoiled with discounts this year. There definitely seems to be a glut of LEGO sets on shelves compared to previous years, which kinda explains why retailers are desperate at moving them.

      • BRICKHEAD says:

I work for Lego. The Falcon is officially confirmed and will price at close to $1400 AUD. 🙁

  21. JACKATTACKS says:

UGHHH. I want this so bad!!!

Don’t own any Lego buildings at all (just spaceships and vehicles) so it’s strange for me to want this set. It just seems so perfect with the functions and different shops and rooms. What’s really shocked me about this set is that if I was given the choice between this, the Death star or the supposably upcoming UCS Millennium falcon, I wouldn’t know which to pick! Such a shame that I’ll never be able to have either of these three sets 🙁

Anyway, for a set of it’s size and price I would have like to have seen all the ninja’s in some form or another although that would have raised the price. Hopefully we’ll see some more civilians and the other ninja-civilian variants (Cole, Zane and Jay) in the cmf line.

    • The dilemma though…. ugh.

Death Star – I need it so bad, but it may get rereleased. Still, I NEED it :/

This set: – won’t get rereleased, looks super super cool, but uggh I can’t spend $600 on this or else I can’t get my Death Star!

    • Jay says:

LEGO buildings are really rare, which is why I’m glad they poured so much love and detail into this one.

Haha, I’d pick this one up for sure. I’m not THAT big of a Star Wars fan and I’m absolutely smitten by how creative this model is.

  22. LEGOFanblue says:

Wow. I better start saving up. This has got to be the most beautiful set since the temple of airjitzu. It’s spectacular. I can’t wait until it’s out

    • Jay says:

Im starting to feel nervous that the Temple of Airjitzu is going to get retired soon. My wallet is pretty much on life support at this stage.

      • Daniel says:

And having your own LEGO Blog is not helping matters Jay ?. It’s pretty much like scheduling your AA meetings at a brewery.

      • Mark says:

I feel your pain. The Ninjago City reveal was enough to make me bite the bullet and buy Temple of Airjitzu as I had the same train of thought. I would be kicking myself if I missed out on that one. I think it will compliment Ninjago City nicely.

  23. Mike says:

Hey Jay, very good review of a perfect set! I still can’t believe the piece count, this is a must have for me! Not only because I own every modular apart of the three oldest ones, the sheer fun of putting together 4.800 pieces in a non-repetitive way will be awesome! Oh how I grew to hate building Tower Bridge…

There is one point where I disagreee with you though: Without some minor tweaking Ninjago City is NOT compatible with modular buildings. If you look closely on your marked picture, the Technic bricks don’t sit directly on the base plate but are raised by one plate. Normal modulars have connectors right on the baseplates, so this won’t fit unless one lowers 70620’s technic bricks first. No big deal of course, but I wonder why this mistake was made at all by the designers.

    • Alex says:

The Connectors sit directly on the base plate. There is no mistake by the designers. It will fit perfect to all modulars

    • Jay says:

Haha, it’s not a review per se. More like early giddy excited thoughts on this awesome set!

I too am missing the first 3 ones, I started with the Fire Brigade.

Hmmm, it definitely looks like it’ll be compatible. Will have to see for myself when I put this one together 🙂

  24. I want to get this so bad… but $600? I can’t afford this AND the Death Star… 🙁

Shocked at the ATM’s dispensing capabilities!

    • Jay says:

I’m actually kinda bummed they still haven’t released a designer video for it! I’d love to see more of the play features and other secrets in action.

Pick this one, the Death Star will be around forever 😉

  25. Anthony Christian says:

    This is a magnificent set.

The price is a killer, unless discounted sometime next year….

    • Jay says:

If you go price per piece, it’s actually still really decent. But yeah, definitely on the pricier end of town. UCS sets almost seem like a bargain next to this beast!

      • Anthony Christian says:

It is beautiful and good value, but the better half will have words if I bring this home.

  26. Grimm says:

I like the hat store! The water elements are super cool too. Thanks for the intel Jay

  27. Matt says:

Ahhhhhh nice price LEGO. It’s such a lovely set, too……

Onyl two complaints: I think they should have included Nya and Zane, and the price is way too high for me. I’m still struggling from purchasing my gaming laptop and all the accessories to go along with it, so this set is gonna be a no for me. ?

    • Jay says:

I think the characters won’t be a issue since they’ll be so many of them scattered throughout the sets AND Minifigure Series too.

Haha, well, with the Steam summer sale coming up, I’m sure your funds are going there to take advantage of your shiny new laptop!

  28. Donovan says:

    Wow.
    Wow.
    Wow.
This is wonderful. Such an amazing set, it really looks like a labor of love for the designers. I saw this on the lego subreddit earlier and was blown away. There are going to be some very tough decisions regarding this, the Saturn V, the Detective’s Office, the Green Dragon Mech, and Destiny’s Bounty come Christmastime!

  29. Bruno says:

Hey Jay, Is it ok if I use one of your images?

  30. Karrakazul says:

Absolutely fantastic set, love it, packed full of detail and character. Haven’t really paid attention to Ninjago before, but the movie sets are really winning me over with some great mechs, figs and now this, something to blow some VIP points on for sure. Kind of wish the Batcave or Arkham Asylum from the Batman movie had gotten this level of attention! As it has the standard three tiers and the connection points to join the other modulars it counts in my eyes as one, even if it might look a little out of place thematically with the others.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, it’s a shame we didn’t get a set of this scale and magnitude with Batman Movie. I can’t help but imagine what a 5,000 piece movie-accurate Batcave would look like.

LEGO seems to have a lot more riding on Ninjago, and I think it’s pretty smart to keep all their best designs for the movie. Especially given that it’ so close to the Christmas season.

      • We may be getting a D2C for the LEGO Batman Movie 😉

      • Hammerdragon says:

Can you imagine the mark up on price for a Lego batman Movie Batcave with the license?? It would have been in the realms of the ridiculous $800 for the Death Star!
Don’t think there’s a mark up with Ninjago so able to create sets of this quality without burning giant holes in people’s wallets!

  31. Jeb says:

Wow. I NEED this set. But 500 dollars? It would be worth it… But I can’t afford it. Not even for my birthday or Christmas. (Then again, I’m turning 13 on my birthday, maybe that’s special enough for my parents to loan me the money :P)

  32. Hammerdragon says:

Breathtaking is absolutely spot on Jay. this is now a serious dilemma. I’ve already had to discard my plans to purchase Assembly square due to lack of display space, price and more urgent needs such as the Old Fishing Store. this one would be great for the boy, however we’ve never really gone in to getting Ninjago sets before save for a couple but this set is epic. However the boy has his eyes on the new City Jungle theme sets, so I’m either gonna have to put this out there and see if he changes his mind, or buy it for myself somehow in which case I’ll be looking at laying out some big chunk of change come September as I can’t see myself wanting to pass on this set what with the playability, parts, colours etc. it’s just too awesome. Have to say of late though regarding Lego’s releases, as the movie says, Everything is Awesome!

    • Jay says:

I think they’ll keep this set around for awhile, so there’s really no hurry. Plus, you can always wait for a local sale, assuming it goes into Myer, Big W etc.

I don’t think you need to fully get into Ninjago to appreciate the set. It’s literally a Japanese-themed modular building – swap out all the characters and it’ll transform into a blank canvas.

LEGO are really killing it with the D2C sets this year!

    • Seb says:

If you do get him this, how could he say ‘I’d have preferred City.’? Who would prefer City over this?

  33. Michael says:

Wow. I too will be poorer, but I’ll be in the US at Christmas time so I’ll try to Black-Friday it.

It is 63cm tall. To give you an idea, most modulars are only approx 30cm tall. It is massive!

  34. Charly says:

    It’s exquisite!

  35. Josh says:

I’m wondering how much outside AFoL (or TFoL for that matter) or LUG input they had. I mean, Lego is amazing. They do phenomenal work! But i don’t know.. It seems to me that the building techniques are, I don’t want to say out of Lego’s range, but I mean come on. Some of these are pretty eccentric builds. If they did, it’s great!

Also, the amount of minifigures is staggering! Holy cheese!! It’s like they want everyone to buy 2. 😀

    Thanks for the post Jay!

    –Josh

    • Jay says:

      hey Josh

      You’re welcome!

There are tons of AFOLs who work within LEGO, not just in the design team. They’ve obviously designed this set with adults and those with large disposable incomes in mind. I’ll find it hard that non-LEGO crazy parents would drop this much of money on a LEGO set.

They know precisely who their targeting, and with the amazing work that they did with the design and presentation, I think this set will be a huge success! Of course they’d love everyone to buy 2 or more. Gotta rake in that $$$

  36. Kevin says:

OMFG!!! Just came back from Big W with a few Lego boxes including two Ninjago sets and then saw this post. Oh well, add another one to the must-buy list! It’ll match up quite well with the Temple Airjitsu and can easily form the basis of a Chinatown section of the Modulars. I agree it’ll be the best set of 2017 – until the new UCS MF arrives…

    • Jay says:

Haha! What did you get from Big W?

Imagine if the UCS MF doesn’t arrive and the best set of the year is a Ninjago set! What a time to be alive!

  37. Con says:

    Such an awesome set!

Your Australian link goes to the GB version of the page, you might want to update that

    https://shop.lego.com/en-AU/NINJAGO-City-70620

Do you reckon it will be in stock at the Chaddy Lego shop?

    • Jay says:

Ah thanks for spotting that! I’ve fixed it!

I have a feeling that Chaddy might get first dibs on this, but I hope that isn’t the case and it’s a wide release.

  38. Mike says:

I… I just can’t stop looking at it. IT’S MAGNIFICENT! The colour scheme, the details – it’s like Asian steampunk. Honestly, this is quite possibly the nicest set I have ever seen, and it’s a definite buy at any price. On that note – I wonder if it’ll hit the retails stores for a 20% discount at some point…

    • Mark says:

Direct to consumer (or D2C) generally means it’s sold directly from Lego online store or Lego retail stores. It might get a general retail release in Australia at a later date but I’m not risking missing out on this masterpiece.

    • Jay says:

Magnificent is such a great word to describe the set! I wouldn’t call it steampunk, more futuristic & traditional.

I think it depends on who gets it. The Silent Mary was a D2C set but all the major retailers got it. I would hope that this would follow the same precedent set.

      • The third largest set ever made by LEGO is not likely to be sold by any random retailer…

Then again I saw the Death Star at Toyworld. It was 15% off, but I didn’t buy it because 1) I don’t have the money [yet] and 2) when the next UCS sets come out the DS might get a larger discount.

        • Jay says:

Toyworld seems to be pretty large in NZ. They seem to get everything, whereas here in Aus, they’re considered independents. That said, they’re usually well-stocked with modulars, although it can be quite hard to find them in the metro area.

          • Seb says:

If it’s not at Toyworld I might not get it, even if I go halves with my dad. For some reason, we don’t have a Lego Store in New Zealand, or let alone Wellington. But then I did see Silent Mary at Moore Wilson, so that gives me hope. I also saw the Death Star in Toy World, and they seem to have the best range of most things, not just Lego.

  39. Ronny says:

Awesome looking set really looking forward to getting it. Btw Jay, would you happen to know whether this within the same scale as the Temple of Airjitsu set?
