First glimpse of 2018 LEGO DC Super Heroes sets and minifigures!

With Comic Con San Diego (the mecca of comic books & pop culture) approaching next week, LEGO have started teasing out sets that will be shown off at the convention. Forbes has given us the first look at 3 upcoming LEGO DC Super Heroes sets which will make their official debut at SDCC, and go on sale in January 2018.

LEGO and DC are banking on Justice League to reinvigorate the franchise and get people hyped up about DC characters. Unlike typical DC-sets which are Batman-centric, LEGO are letting the other DC Super Heroes (rightfully) characters shine and give fans long-awaited characters like Reverse Flash, Lobo, Firestorm and Killer Frost.

Basically, if you’re a fan of the excellent Flash TV series, you should be on Cloud 9 with the debut of these minifigures.

Let’s take a closer look at the 3 sets unveiled. There’s no direct prices revealed, but the article says that the sets will range from US$19.99 to US$39.99, which will make it quite easy to predict the pricing based on historical trends.

LEGO 76096 Superman Krypto Team-Up (US$19.99)

76096 Superman Krypto Team-Up is the smallest set of the wave, and features Lobo and his space bike as well as a non-DC Super Hero Girls version of Krypto the Superdog, Superman’s trusty Kryptonian dog.

It’s a small set but looks to be a cheap way to grab your hands on Lobo, somewhat of a cult-favourite DC character. You also get a small kryptonite prison and a selection of trans-green accessories.

This is a must-buy for me, mostly because it looks like it won’t cost too much and because I want yet another Krypto!

LEGO 76098 Speed Force Freeze Pursuit (US$29.99)

76098 Speed Force Freeze Pursuit is undoubtedly my most-anticipated set because it heralds the arrival of the Reverse Flash in minifigure form. I couldn’t really care less about the models which include Cyborg’s helicopter and some sort of Zamboni for Killer Frost which honestly don’t look too exciting.

The Flash is my favourite DC Super Hero, so finally getting his arch-nemesis is going to be a dream come true for me. The addition of Killer Frost/Caitlin Snow is also a nice consolation.

I can already tell that I’m going to dislike the set but begrudgingly buy it for the minifigures – which makes it the perfectly designed LEGO DC Super Heroes set from a commercial perspective.

LEGO 76097 Lex Luther Mech Takedown (US$39.99)

The largest set of the wave is 76097 Lex Luther Mech Takedown which gives us the biggest LEGO Lex Luthor mech yet. I have very fond memories of 6862 Superman vs Lex Luthor Power Armour which was one of my first few LEGO sets post-dark ages and the subject of one of my earliest reviews (which is laughably bad).

The set is bursting with minifigures, and includes Cheetah, a new Lex Luthor variant, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Firestorm. Really glad to see LEGO re-use Ghost Rider’s awesome flaming head for Firestorm’s head!

This is yet another easy buy for me. It has everything I value in a set – mechs and new DC minifigures.

So yeah, those are the 3 new LEGO DC Super Heroes sets that were unveiled this morning. They will go on sale in January 2018 and I cannot wait for them. One thing I noticed and quite like is that you buy all 3 of them, you pretty much get the entire (cinematic) Justice League lineup, except for Aquaman.

This is going to be a nice (and cheaper) alternative for fans who don’t like the characters from the Justice League sets. Great for parents who will have kids going crazy for Justice League sets and who are new to LEGO!

What do you think of the new DC Super Heroes sets? Let me know in the comments if you’re planning to get any of these and which set stands out to you!

So you said the whole lineup except aquaman. Here’s the aquaman set

  3. Raspberry milshake says:

Ooohhhh…. I read the review. It’s really that bad.

  4. Colby says:

    Not the Flashes, the sets?

  5. Colby says:

I am a huge fan of the new Flash tv show, so I am super glad we are getting more of him? The awesome price points, new pieces and great minifigures make me want them all!?

  6. JC says:

These sets are great. I really hope we get one with Green Arrow and Black Canary in 2018.

    • Colby says:

I really want green arrow too

    • LEGOFanblue says:

Apparently there will be a second series of LEGO Batman movie minifigures and Black Canary is half confirmed to be in it

      • Jay says:

I’ll be REALLY surprised if they give us a second Series. Really surprised! I’ve read the rumours but I don’t get why LEGO would do it, considering the first series sold so poorly.

        • Massinissa says:

Jay, do we know for sure the first series sold poorly? I don’t doubt you, I just would love to know for sure, and I don’t know where you found that information.

          • Jay says:

No evidence, sorry! That was just based on anecdotal evidence such as me observing boxes of Batman Movie minifigures just sitting on shelves. Also, in other territories, they’ve been handed out as gifts to incentivise purchases. I think it was Malaysia where you could receive a whole box of Batman minifigures if you bought a Classic TV Series Batcave.

    • Jay says:

Ooooooh, Black Canary would be SO sweet. I’m actually pretty happy with DC minifigures and how they’re much more open to releasing more characters, unlike Marvel who are keeping a lot of their biggest names close to their chest.

  7. Raspberry milshake says:

Blerg. I’m just hoping that the marvel set’s are much better, because these are just lazy.

But in the Lex Luthor mech it seems that lego have used a fixed version of the wonder woman torso (the one with the pink skin) That should be a relief for any collector who’s looking to display that amazing minifig.

    • Jay says:

The recent crop of non-MCU Marvel sets have been a bit lacklustre, but I really hope that 2018 finally gives us the Fantastic Four. Or even some X-Men would be nice.

Yeah, I noted that too! Hopefully it doesn’t look okay in renders but actually extends to the actual minifig itself.

  8. Davin says:

After all these years I thought you are a fan of Batman! Guess I was wrong 🙂

When I saw these pictures on YouTube, I was a bit disappointed having Batman and Superman in their overly generic costumes. But then I looked closely, Batman sports a new costume design from Rebirth. Why can’t they do the similar treatment to Supes?

    • Jay says:

Haha Batman’s #3 on my list. Flash and Green Lantern are my number ones and twos 🙂

Yeah the new Rebirth costume looks great on Batman. I definitely think they’re saving these costumes for things like DC books or DVDs – kinda like what they did with Wonder Woman.

  9. Karrakazul says:

Lobo is a huge surprise given how over-the-top ultra violent the character is, hope to see him in a future set that does the main man’s bike more justice and includes some space dolphins! The builds are all pretty meh, but they’re obviously cheap sets for kids so can’t really fault them on that, they know how to sucker in adults like me with some nice character choices. Little disappointed on the noticeable lack of leg or arm printing though.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, but if we’re talking about violence, LEGO have done Deadpool, Wolverine and heck, the Joker is one of their flagship DC characters.

The bike definitely needs a bit of work, but for a cheap set it seems like a necessary compromise to keep the price low.

LEGO Super Heroes minifigures seem to be taking a leaf out of the Star Wars playbook, release minifigs without arm printing, and then release an “updated” one in the future with better printing.

  10. Michael says:

LOBOOOOOO! So excited. Can team him up with a Friends dolphin for High priest Lobo! 🙂

  11. Redenzo says:

Jay help me choose which Lego set to buy: Ninjago City, Firehouse HQ, Helicarrier, Porsche 911
    All prices are $500

    • Michael says:

A large part of this comes down to which theme you like better. Firehouse comes with heaps of minifigs, but if you don’t love Ghostbusters, they won’t be worth much to you.

On their own, do you prefer vehicles or buildings? The Helicarrier is basically a big vehicle.

I own the Firehouse, and it is huge, fun to build and great to display. It’s also a fun dollhouse type build. However, it really is a huge, red building.

From those 4, I would pick Ninjago City. It looks really intricate, fun to build, HUGE and great for display. Also a huge selection of minifigs, with a CMF set to help populate it.

    • Jay says:

      Depends on what you like!

My personal preference would be (in descending order): Ninjago City, Porsche 911, Firehouse HQ and Helicarrier.

  12. “I have very fond memories of 6862 Superman vs Lex Luthor Power Armour which was one of my first few LEGO sets post-dark ages and the subject of one of my earliest reviews (which is laughably bad).”

LOL, it’s actually really good for a first review.

  13. Cool post! I posted about it a short while before you 😛 https://vaderfan2187.wordpress.com/2017/07/14/2018-dc-superheroes-sets-revealed/

I really like the two bigger sets. Don’t care so much for Lobo so the smaller one is lower priority but it’s still nice.

  14. Redenzo says:

Great deal of info on the glimpse of the new dc sets, I might just get the superman Krypto Team-up for Lobo and still saving up for that Ninjago city set, its a must buy for me.
