LEGO Voltron and Ship In A Bottle, The Flagship Leviathan are your next LEGO Ideas sets!

Early this morning, the LEGO Ideas team announced the Third 2016 Review Results on their blog, and the results should delight a pretty big swath of LEGO fans!

Ship In A Bottle, The Flagship Leviathan, a project by JakeSadovich77 has been given the green light to be produced as a LEGO Ideas set! The Ship In A Bottle project, as its name suggests is an entirely brick built ship in a bottle.

This has all the hallmarks of a great, adult-targeted LEGO Ideas set, with what looks to be a really interesting and unique build, with plenty of cool technical challenges to overcome. Not to mention it being primarily a display model, which is right up my alley!

I was really excited when I read the news this morning, as The Flagship Leviathan was one of my preferences to win from the previous review period.

My favourite, the 1950s Diner unfortunately didn’t make the cut, as did my 3rd choice, The Iron Giant. All in all, this looks set to be a really sweet set that makes excellent use of a LEGO Ideas set slot.

There’s no other details on the Ship In A Bottle’s final design, release date or even pricing, but we should find out in early 2018!

More excitingly… LEGO have ALSO announced that  Voltron – Defender of the Universe will also be a LEGO Ideas set! The project, designed by len_d69 was put on hold previously, probably due to LEGO needed extra time to negotiate the license.

As I kinda expected, the extra time and uncertainty did pay off in spades and I’m really delighted that there’ll be an honest to goodness LEGO set. I’m personally very happy because I’m a big fan of both the classic cartoon series, as well as the new Netflix version. I don’t think this LEGO Ideas set will set the world on fire, as the set’s appeal is quite narrow and targeted at fans of the series.

Even though Voltron was a massive pop culture phenomenon in the 80s, and there were quite a number of non-hardcore LEGO friends who messaged me exclaiming with excitement about news of the set.

My prediction is that the set will sell moderately well like other nostalgia/pop culture LEGO Ideas sets (Doctor Who, Big Bang Theory) but it probably won’t set the world on fire outside of Voltron fans.

All in all, I feel like this wave of LEGO Ideas announcements was a really good one, with something for the AFOL crowd, as well as something for the 80s nostalgia bunch who may not be traditional or hardcore fans of LEGO.

Lastly, the LEGO Ideas team also revealed the sets from the First 2017 LEGO Review (they really need to rename these. Use seasons maybe?) of which the results will be announced sometime in Autumn 2017 (that’s Spring for us antipodeans).

Honestly, it seems like a fairly weak lineup and I don’t think any set will pass.

If I had to pick one, my heart wants the Medieval Watermill, but I think the Sega Classic Arcade Machines have the best shot, especially that LEGO already has a relationship with Sega through Sonic in LEGO Dimensions. My money’s still on no projects being greenlit, though, given that we got Voltron in this round.

What do you think of the results and which LEGO Ideas set are you most excited about? Were you disappointed that any of your favourites didn’t make the cut? Let me know in the comments!

When are you going to review the Ninjago movie sets, Jay?

  2. Kinnibari says:

I’m completely delighted that the ship in a bottle has made it through, I really wanted it to be made! Can’t wait to build it.
I like the Venitian Houses, would be happy if they were made. Not sure of their chances though.

  3. Warmongurl says:

Of course I was hoping that the UCS version of Rey’s speeder would be chosen, though I didn’t expect it 🙂 Glad Lego chose a set that’s never been done before!

  4. Karrakazul says:

A great idea and a lovely looking set, but a pass personally for the ship in a bottle, would definitely have gone for several of the other candidates though. That’s the way it goes unfortunately, a lot of us probably crossing our fingers and hoping as much as the creators!

For the next round really hoping for the Blues Mobile, not just because the movies are great, but also because I love the Dodge Monaco so it’d be win-win there.

  5. Colby says:

I will totally get the ship in the bottle. It’ll look great next to the sea cow?

  6. Redenzo says:

JAY JAY PLEASE REVIEW LEGO NINJAGO SETS THEY ARE OUT IN AUSTRALIA

    • Jeb says:

I think he’ll review them eventually. I love Jay’s reviews too, but while you wait, why not watch some of JANGBRICKS reviews? He’s a Lego youtuber.

  7. Anthony says:

Don’t like either and my wallet breathes a sigh of relief

    • Daniel says:

Agreed. It’s an odd feeling when you’re actually happy when nothing you absolutely love got through, because the finances will be given a little breathing space.

  8. Shamus says:

Love the idea of Voltron, but could see it being quite expensive. Any guestimates on how much a set like that could cost?

  9. spitfire1936 says:

Disappointed the Land Rover didn’t make it this round, especially as they’ve ceased production of the real thing.

As for the next round, I cant believe you think it is a week line up…after Ecto 1 and DeLorean the Blues Mobile is another iconic film car. Also I will stop buying Lego if the dont put the Red Arrow Hawk T1 into production and if they do I will be one of the first to order it. Along with that have you not read the back story to the Surf Rescue?

  10. Donovan says:

I’m really excited about these results. The ship in the bottle looks great and I’ll pick it up for sure. I had been hoping it would pass. I also think its great Voltron got approved; I’vr never seen the series, but I know several friends who will be ecstatic.

  11. Grimm says:

Wow! The ship in a bottle looks awesome!! look at all those great pieces! I love the Idea of this set and will defiantly want to buy that and display it with my other Lego Pirate sets.

  12. Michael says:

Would love the arcade machines, don’t think any are up to scratch. Very excited about this round’s ‘winners’

  13. Caleb says:

I’m not 13, so I couldn’t vote, but my favorite was definitely Hulkbuster UCS.
    It’s awesome!!!

  14. Monty says:

Very happy about the ship in the bottle – would have also loved to have seen Red Dwarf or the Boat Repair shop. Voltron will not be a purchase for me, but really happy it made it through for the fans.

As for the next round, honestly only the watermill interests me, but I think you are right, I suspect Lego will go for a smaller count piece if any, next round.
