Introducing the 2017 Winter Village set – LEGO 10259 Winter Village Station

There are a few things in life that are certain – death, taxes and a new LEGO Winter Village set each year. This year, much to my surprise, LEGO have unveiled 10259 Winter Village Station, a quaint holiday-themed set that is the perfect companion to 2016’s Winter Holiday Train!

It kinda makes sense for LEGO to release a Winter Village train station to accompany the Holiday Train – while I did like the Winter Holiday Train (I scored it a 3/5 in my review), what was really missing from it was some sort of structure or station to anchor it within LEGO’s expansive Winter Village.

10259 Winter Village Station’s release date will be 1 October 2017, with early access for LEGO VIP members on 14 September.

Here’s the regional pricing for the Winter Village Station. They’ll be linked once the product page on LEGO.com.

Here’s a look at the back of the box, which clearly suggests for it to be combined with the Winter Holiday Train, as we have the festive locomotive prominently displayed pulling into the station. At first glance, I was a little let down that the model was a little small, but after taking time to consider the context of the set, I think LEGO made the right call keeping the set’s design modest.

The set’s piece count is 902 pieces, so it isn’t too shabby, although there are a lot of smaller elements that contribute to the set.

The core attraction of the set is the train station itself. Yes, it’s small, but I think it perfectly fits the setting of LEGO’s Winter Village theme. It’s a remote-ish village in the north, so you’d expect a small rural, quaint but functional train station instead of a large, architectural structure.

I think the simplicity of it all works particularly well in this case. I was ready to hate on the set, but after popping into my study to take a look at my LEGO Winter Village sets, I had a change of heart.

One of the more exciting new elements in the set is possibly the new clock face. I kinda like that we tend to get new clocks in Winter Village sets – check out the most recent one from Santa’s Workshop

While it may be small the Winter Village Station has all that a respectful rural train station needs for it to function. There’s a ticket counter for passengers to buy their tickets and it appears in this photo above that the “Tickets” sign-tile is printed which is a neat sign.

Here’s the front of the station, where the barista also doubles up as a station attendant to sweep the ice off the pathway.

For the passengers or family members who are awaiting visitors, there’s also a small cafe manned by a female barista with a neat coffee machine.

Interestingly, if you read the menu in the background, there’s “eggnog” on the list which probably makes this one of the very rare cases where LEGO explicitly references an alcoholic beverage.

But hey, it’s the Winter Village, the land of forever Christmas, so I guess ordering an eggnog at a cafe is the same as me ordering a Long Black or Latte.

There’s also a bench for passengers to sit and wait for the train. Here you can see what appears to be a nice newspaper tile, which is a nice update to the traditional “The LEGO News” tile. The yellow paper gives it a very quaint small-town feel as well.

To bump up the set’s piece count, there’s a “festive bus” included as well. It’s honestly, just okay to me. Thematically, it does fit as the passengers would need some sort of means of transportation to get them to the Winter Village.

The bus has a very classic, retro design, but it mostly feels like a generic bus. Outside of the wreaths hanging off the site, I don’t quite see how it qualifies as a festive bus.

That said, I do like the colours used. Dark blue and yellow with white accents make for a very attractive colour scheme.

You also get 4 straight track pieces to allow it to connect to the tracks from the Winter Holiday train. As a bonus, you also get a railroad crossing section, complete with boom gates and a small signboard to go along with it as well.

Lastly, here’s a look at the 5 minifigures included. You get a bus driver, barista, grandmother, child and a ticket agent. It’s a typical spread of winter village minifigures.

I’m a big fan of LEGO’s Winter Village theme, so naturally, I quite like the train station. I think a lot of LEGO fans are going to be turned off by how small this set is, but I think its price point of US$80 and AU$120 makes this quite a compelling buy.

In a year where our wallets have been savaged by all the cool sets released by LEGO, it’s nice to have a relatively cheap set that won’t burn a hole in your wallet. It’s not the most affordable Winter Village set ever (that honour still goes to the original Winter Village Toy Shop which retailed for US$60) but I think it’s fairly priced.

If I were to poke holes at the set, the size and lack of ambition when it comes to the design would be my number one gripe. I also feel like this set feels incomplete in a sense that you need the Winter Holiday Train to go with this set.

My theory? This station was originally conceptualised as part of the Winter Holiday Train set, but LEGO decided to split it up into two sets. They make more money this way and they also save the hassle of having to design a new Winter Village set. *removes tinfoil*.

So yeah, I like this set, but I don’t love it. I’m still waiting for LEGO to give us a Winter Village tavern! Maybe next year.

What do you think about the Winter Village Station? For those of you that religiously collect the Winter Village sets, how do you feel about this set? Let me know in the comments!

Not all eggnog has alcohol in it sir!

I’m still waiting for my Village Station. I think it’s a cool little set. I didn’t purchase the winter train set but will use the 3 Lego creator 3 in 1 train sets I have to make a train. I do wish the bus was a different color – it looks like a school bus! I too came a little late to the Winter sets, so I only have the Santa Workshop and Toyshop. I’m not a Winter Village purist, so I add the Creator Changing Seasons “winter” house. As to the question about using Lego Friends items, although I’m not a big fan of Friends, I will sometimes add the Reindeer and sleigh from Anna and Kristoff’s sleigh adventure (and sometimes the mini-dolls too). What the heck, in Santa’s Village everyone is welcome! Occasionally a Yeti and a White Wookie drop in, too!

I just finished building it the other day, it exceeded my expectations and the build was pretty fun! I guess it doubles as a school bus during the rest of the year – I’d like to think it gets converted into a Christmas bus during the festive seasons!

With the way LEGO are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they re-release the other ones, I for one would love to see an enhanced bakery. That’s the beauty of LEGO! Good idea, I should add the White Wookie in my photos too 😉 And maybe have Santa Darth Vader make an appearance 🙂

Just built the winter village station, (starting Christmas a bit early) and I thought it was pretty cool. The bus isn’t too bad, i like it as it looks like the buses on all the American tv shows. Did anyone else find that the train won’t go past the crossing? The first 2 go past and the 3rd carriage couldn’t cross. On further inspection underneath, the parts that make the tree turn hang too low. Not sure if the train carriage was built correctly, and I’m too lazy to check. Had to remove the 4×1 studded pieces altogether from the crossing so the 3rd carriage can get through. As this set was made to go with the train, I did find it a bit odd that this was a problem.

    • Jay says:

Oh that’s cool! Glad you thought the set was cool! Mine just arrived in the mail this week, so I’ll be building it soon. Interesting that your train couldn’t go pass the crossing, I’ll have to test mine out to see if it happens to mine.

Thanks for the great preview and review! We’ve been waiting to buy this addition to our holiday scene until the Black Friday nutcracker promo. Any idea of how this impacts the dimensions of the full train? Right now, it’s 27″ in diameter, but I don’t know how adding this will impact the total size. Also, thoughts on what options would be possible for how you could integrate the straight pieces? (For example, do you have to add all four straight pieces together in line, thereby needing to purchase four more straight tracks for the opposite side of the oval? Or split it two and two? Or something else?) I can’t find dimension info ANYWHERE, and we’re trying to figure out what size table we need for display!

When is the release date in Australia?

A winter village tavern? Oh you are a genius. I love that Idea (capital I!!).
As you have described me, I am one of those people, who religiously collect the winter village and religiously set it out in December and put it away as soon as Christmas holiday has gone . It has become our family ritual. The kids love it ( so do I) .
After falling in love with the bakery, I bought the same winter the toy shop…and year after year the passion grew….into addiction.
Last year I had to buy the “normal” train station as a winter village with a “stationsless train” was odd to me. So this year I am going to replace it with this new set . It is on my ordering list. Lucky me, I have both B’day and Xmas in December.
I love your description of this new set. Thanks a lot. Happy assembly.
    Carola

I’m disappointed. After the train last year and the total fail on the previous year’s Xmas carnival, I was so looking forward to a new building structure to add to my Winter Village set. Sadly, not to be. Three years is disappointment for me!

  8. Nicholas says:

    This is cool and awesome!

  9. Brent S says:

Hey…great review and conversations in the comments. I joined the game late so missed out on all the early sets. I only have the toy shop, Santa house/shop and train so am a bit disappointed personally as I was hoping for another retail style addition the the village. But this does give me a great way to tie in the train as I had a tough time figuring out where to place it.

I have a question for you or other fans…has anyone added in any of the Lego friends winter sets to thier Winter Village collection? Obviously without the figures but they have the Hot Chocolate truck and a ski chalet I believe? I’ve never built a Friends set but I assume they are the same size. Looking forward to the comments on this. Thanks!!

I’m a little off topic, but I saw this publication and I can not help but think of what probability there is of a set of LEGOS but inspired by some monument or attraction of Latin America? Can it be lego creator or lego ideas or something like that?

  11. OhioBricker says:

I don’t understand all the criticism (on Brickset and The Brick Fan as well) about the size of the set. It’s supposed to be a quaint, rural, Christmas train station. It’s not supposed to be a grand central station. If it cost $150, I would understand the criticism, but it’s appropriately priced, in my opinion.
And the fact that it doesn’t come with a train?!? If you’re not buying the featured Christmas set LEGO releases each year, then don’t complain when the next set that comes out was supposed to be paired with the last one. That’s obviously how LEGO intends for you to collect them.
Personally, I’m thrilled with the price of the set and I’m glad I now have a station for my Winter Train.

  12. Warmongurl says:

Most US egg nog is non-alcoholic, in fact I look forward to pumpkin egg nog every year! I bet you find it less often in Australia though since it’s a cold weather beverage. 🙂

I do love the cafe’s printed menu tile.

  13. Thomas says:

Piecing together the Lego Winter set is a Christmas ritual in my young family’s calendar. When the decorations go up we get cracking on putting the Lego set together. Looking at the sets previous to this, this set is underwhelming. Santas workshop, the toyshop, the market, all felt really festive and they added to the build up to Christmas. I would have hoped that if they had released this, they would have also released another main set. They should have released this last year, because you wouldn’t want the station without the train set. In any case I’ll buy it, we’ll enjoy building it and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that next year we’ll get something a bit more special.

  14. jo says:

Hi i was really hoping for this station to come along but it doesnt really look very substantial like some of the other house type structures i think i will be re building it somewhat…i have the train set and was eagily awiting the stations arrival. Ahh well you cant beat them all. The design of the bus is lovely but i really do not like the colours i dont think it will blend in well with the overall scheme and it all seems kind of a forgotten add on as opposed to a set on it’s own. The train is pretty much sold out so not very good for someone who has not purchased it. There are some amazing versions around shame Lego didnt use one of those designs. Thank you for posting all the best Jo

  15. SpideyFTW says:

Eh, I was put off at first, but it doesn’t look so bad – but not that good. Also, a quick tip, Big W has cheaper prices than other retailers for LEGO, at least from what I’ve seen. I’d highly suggest buying some Ninjago Movie sets there if you wanna do some reviews, especially the Destiny’s Bounty set (it’s only $225 AU there, so you save $25). I don’t know if it’s a clearance or something but I’m gonna buy what I can.

  16. Jo says:

Too small. Bus is not necessary. Rather wish them to make the station bigger.

  17. Karrakazul says:

Quite a nice little station, if you pop off the wreaths and swap out some of the snow for some other colours you’ve got yourself a regular station if you don’t have the matching train or other Winter Village sets to go with it.

  18. I’m glad you like it, but I’m not a fan of it. Never been a Winter Village buyer and I found the 2016 train very unimpressive so this is a definite pass for me 🙂

    • Jay says:

Started with the OG Winter Toy Shop and I’ve never been able to stop, heh. It was one of the first “major” sets I bought after coming out of my Dark Ages, so the theme has a very special place in my heart.

  19. Chris L says:

Thanks Jay. This will be a day one purchase for me. Now I need to figure out where in my Winter Village MOC to put it.

  20. James says:

This is the best of both worlds for me. Lego Trains and the Holiday sets are my favorite so I’ll be buying this on the day of release. I had no idea this was in the works. Thanks for the exciting news, Jay!

    • Jay says:

Awesome! I’m still holding on to my belief that LEGO still has a Creator Expert train in their cards this year. We still haven’t gotten a new train this year, so I’m believing for an Emerald Night-ish locomotive.

      Glad you’re excited!

  21. In the U.S.A. we can buy non-alcoholic egg nog in our grocery stores. I don’t see that beverage as always containing alcohol.

That said I was surprised to read that it has 902 pieces! It certainly doesn’t look like that big of a set. I do love the looks of the bus though. Did I count 5 minifigures? So that’s 20 pieces right there. I do like minifigs though so hmm…

I wish the price tag were about $20 less. That would make it easier for me to justify but maybe if the promos are right in October or November I will make the splurge.

    • Bill says:

As with all the Winter Village sets, it has its charm. However, in lieu of the bus, I think the set would have been better served by including a dedicated passenger car for the Winter Holiday Train, which only features a small caboose that fits two minifigs. A track maintenance vehicle with a plow would have rounded out the set nicely, as well.

      • Paul says:

Bingo! You nailed it there Bill.

Thanks for breaking the news Jay.
I was probably more excited to get this in the inbox than the when news of a new train broke, but I’m just as disappointed when scrolling down to see the pics.
Your article sets the perfect tone when previewing this set. The originals like the Winter Toy Shop and Winter Bakery were just set such a high bar. The theme though is still one of the all time best… making this a must buy.

    • Jay says:

Oh, interesting! I’ve only always had alcoholic eggnog as it feels weird otherwise.

Yeah, LEGO has been moving towards a trend of using more smaller elements into the set, both to make the piece count look more impressive, but also because they’re able to add in more intricate details and designs.
