LEGO 76161 1989 Batwing is the next set based on Tim Burton’s Batman

There’s no better way to celebrate Batman Day than getting your first official look at LEGO 76161 1989 Batwing!

Following on from 2019’s outstanding 1989 Batmobile, the 1989 Batwing is the next Batvehicle that continues to celebrate Tim Burton’s iconic take on the Caped Crusader.

This 2,363-piece set is true to the Batwing’s design from Tim Burton’s Batman, and also follows LEGO Batman’s creed of “only working in black. And sometimes, very very dark grey”, and makes for quite the display piece.

Priced at US$199.99 / AU$299.99, the LEGO 1989 Batwing has a VIP release date of 21 October, and a general release of 1 November, and will be available directly from LEGO.com or your local LEGO store.

This is really the definitive version of the Batwing, and the designers have done a remarkable job translating the curves and lines into LEGO form.

Of course, you can relive the Batwing in all its glory in this video (including getting shot at by Joker’s giant gun).

Here’s a look at the cockpit, and I really love the gatling guns and missiles built into it.

The set comes with three minifigures – the Tim Burton Batman with his exclusive cowl (it seems identical to the Batmobile version), a new variant of Joker – this time in his Mime costume (from that pen is mightier than the sword scene), and a Boombox goon minifigure.

Like the Batmobile, the Batwing also comes with its very own “UCS plaque” with its stats and dimensions.

The LEGO model measures over 11cm ( 4” ) high, 52cm ( 20” ) long and 58cm ( 22” ) wide.

Like the Batmobile, the Batwing looks absolutely stunning and imposing on display, and I love that they included a stand to angle it for maximum impact.

An interesting nugget hidden in the press release, mentions that the set also features a special brick which allows builders to mount and display their model on the wall for added impact. I’m really curious as to what this special brick is.

Like the Batmobile, the LEGO 1989 Batwing is a must-have for any self-respecting LEGO Batman fan with a couple of extra hundred dollars to spare.

If you own the 1989 Batmobile, you really do need to add this set to your collection, as it would be incredible to display them both next to each other.

For over 2,000 pieces, and for its sheer display presence, I think the set is fairly priced. With the set’s release so close to Christmas, I expect it to do really well, especially considering that LEGO can’t seem to satisfy demand from adult LEGO fans.

The LEGO 1989 Batwing will be available from LEGO.com from 21 October onwards.
