Australian LEGO Sales January 2016

January 1, 2016 By Jay 11 Comments

Happy New Year and welcome to 2016! To kick start the new year, here’s a roundup of LEGO sales in January. I’ve made a few changes to the Sales post details, with the most notable being the addition of the percentage discounts from the set’s RRP to help you make more informed decisions on the value of sets on sale.

I’ll be updating this post as new sales come up, so do check in or keep an eye for updates on Facebook to find out about the latest sales and deals. You can also find a shortcut to this post in the top menu bar, just below the blog header or by clicking the Menu Button (the one with three horizontal lines) if you’re browsing on a mobile device.

Big W (catalogue link 7 – 13 January)

Big W LEGO Sales - January 2016

With the school season starting up, Australian retailers have cobbled together a few back to school catalogues which have some LEGO scattered here and there. Big W comes out ahead with a pretty decent sale, especially if you’ve caught the Star Wars fever and want to pick up the latest The Force Awakens sets at very attractive prices.

Other than that, Big W also have 20% off all LEGO on their online store. Sounds good since Big W prices are typically a little lower than RRP but in reality, the selection leaves much to be desired. You can check out the sets that are available to purchase online here.

Here are some of the deals in the catalogue. Do note that the percentage discount is based off the set’s RRP, not on Big W’s everyday low prices.

Format: $sale price | $RRP (percentage discount)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

  • 75101 First Order Special Forces Tie Fighter – $79 | $100 (21%)
  • 75102 Poe’s X-Wing Fighter- $95 | $130 (27%)
  • 75099 Rey’s Speeder – $29| $40 (27%)

Assorted

  • 60084 Racing Bike Transporter – $20 | $30 (33%)
  • 60081 Pickup Tow Truck – $20 | $30 (33%)
  • 60078 Utility Shuttle – $20 | $30 (33%)
  • 60073 Service Truck – $20 | $30 (33%)
  • 70755 Jungle Raider – $20 | $30 (33%)
  • 60091 Deep Sea Starter Set – $12 | $16 (25%)
  • 60066 Swamp Police Starter Set – $12 | $16 (25%)

Target (catalogue link 7 – 13 January)

Target LEGO Sales - January 2016

Target also has a small number of Star Wars The Force Awakens LEGO sets on sale. Noting too noteworthy except maybe the Darth Vader and General Grievous buildable figures. The discounts aren’t fantastic – you can get most of the sets cheaper at Big W. Be smart and price match!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

  • 75101 First Order Special Forces Tie Fighter – $89| $100 (11%)
  • 75099 Rey’s Speeder – $34| $40 (15%)
  • 75111 Darth Vader – $44 | $50 (12%)
  • 75112 General Grievous – $44 | $50 (12%)

Kmart (duration unknown – instore only)

LEGO Kmart January Clearance 2016 (1) LEGO Kmart January Clearance 2016 (2)

Kmart has gotten a head start, kicking off some really great clearance sales as they try to get rid of old 2015 LEGO sets in anticipation of new 2016 sets coming in. If you’re a Ninjago fan, there are some fantastic discounts (30% and upwards) to be had.

If you get lucky, 60097 City Square is also deeply discounted at $149. That’s an amazing price for a set which contains so much value. The 31039 Creator Blue Power Jet is also on clearance and I picked one up myself yesterday for $59.

As with all in-store clearance deals, your mileage may vary depending on the stock levels of your local Kmart and the availability of the sets. You might even discover some sets on clearance at Kmart that I wasn’t able to list here. If you find any other notable deals, please let me know in the comments and I’ll update this accordingly.

Format: $sale price – $RRP (percentage discount)

City

  • 60097 City Square – $149 | $250 (40%)
  • 60068 Crook’s Hideout – $59 | $80 (26%)
  • 60075 Excavator and Truck – $45 | $60 (25%)
  • 60043 Prisoner Transport  – $23 | $30 (23%)
  • 60057 Camper Van  – $23 | $30 (23%)
  • 60073 Service Truck  – $23 | $30 (23%)
  • 60083 Snowplow Truck  – $23 | $30 (23%)

Creator

  • 31039 Blue Power Jet – $59 | $90 (34%)
  • 31027 Blue Racer – $7 | $10 (30%)

Ninjago

  • 70736 Attack of the Morro Dragon – $79 | $110 (39%)
  • 70737 Titan Mech Battle – $59 | $90 (34%)
  • 70735 Ronin R.E.X – $59 | $90 (34%)
  • 70746 Condrai Copter Attack – $29 | $40 (28%)
  • 70748 Titanium Dragon – $39 | $60 (35%)
  • 70745 Anacondrai Crusher $23 | $30 (23%)

    Hi Jay

Thanks for ur great updates on all the sales!!

Just wondering if you know if the Sandcrawler is coming back anytime soon. What I gather from your blog is that it’s a big w exclusive but they just are not even selling it. Any ideas where to get this retail in Aus?

    Cheers Dale

      Hey Dale!

With the Sandcrawler.. It’s extremely hard to say. Yes, it’s been a Big W exclusive and my best educated guess is that we’ll see one more appearance in the Big W Toy Sale later in June.

That said, it COULD show up with other retailers. The UCS Red 5 Xwing was a Big W exclusive in the 2014 toy sale, before being released in nearly every other toy retailer months later.

So.. There could be a chance.

What I recommend is waiting till June to see if it shows up in toy catalogues.. And if you can get a good deal. If you miss out then, you can order it online from LEGO.com.

Alternatively, order it online when LEGO has a double VIP points bonus!

      Hope this helps!

        OK cool, well fingers crossed.

Thanks for the information, I’m sure if it does come on sale in June I’ll here about it here.

        Cheers

Hi thanks for this blog! I’m a new AFOL and decided to begin my collection with the Star Wars editions =) (Malaysian here by the way)

Quick question. Was looking through the Big W promotions and am keen to get some from there. But does Big W ship units internationally? Or is there a way that a group of people bulk buy and perform the shipment separately?

    Appreciate your thoughts…thanks!

Hi Eugene! Hope you’re having a great start to LEGO – Star Wars is a pretty cool launching pad!

Unfortunately, Big W is a chain store here in Australia and don’t ship internationally. If you’re looking to buy LEGO from overseas, you can use Barnes and Noble, they’re one of the few retailers that ship to nearly any country in the world. Do read up about import duties and stuff if your order is above a certain threshold.

Big W has had some new Star Wars sets popping up, over last week, Micro Fighters, Battlepacks and Constraction (Phasma and Ren). I don’t know the other themes well enough, but they’ve has some 2016 stock at least.

Happy International @LEGO Day! The 28th of Januar Happy International @LEGO Day!

The 28th of January commemorates the date where the first patent for the iconic LEGO brick was filed with the Danish Patent and Trademark Office in Denmark by then-owner Godtfred Kirk Christiansen.

Here's a photo of the patent which is on display in the history section of the @legohouse, which I got to see last year when I visited Billund!

There's tons of incredible historical artifacts, and I've also shared some other displays that commemorated this part of LEGO's history!
