The day’s finally here, 2 x 4 Day aka 2 April in Australian/UK/everywhere else in the world date format. 2×4 Day is a fan-created global day of LEGO play.
To commemorate the date this year, I put a call out for a 2×4 build challenge where I tasked you guys with building something out of only 2 x 4 bricks.
I was pretty floored by the entries received and I have to say that this was one of the toughest challenges that I’ve ever had to judge. It was pretty close and there were plenty of fantastic entries from LEGO fans from all different age groups, but I’m pretty confident with my choice.
I really enjoyed seeing and reading about all the different creations, and I have to say that I was very impressed by the sheer levels of creativity on display.
Special thanks once again to LEGO for providing the prizes for this build challenge.
So without further ado, here are the winners of the 2 x 4 Build Challenge!
Congratulations to Jeffrey Kong for this utterly delightful rendition of Tetris Bricks! He described his design as “Here is my tribute to a true classic. Can you recognise all the seven Tetris pieces here? :)”
Jeffrey takes the 1st prize of 1x 31065 Park Street Townhouse, 1x 31063 Beachside Vacation & 1x 10704 Creative Box.
I’d also like to congratulate the two runner-up winners:
Antonia Averes’ charming build called “Tsunami”! It’s a really simple but effective design and I love how the shape of the wave was captured – no mean feat considering the limitation of only using 2 x 4 bricks!
Elliot Bryant’s “Space shuttle with external tank and rocket boosters built entirely out of 2×4 bricks.” There’s just something really cool about this space shuttle’s blocky design. What really sold me on this was the flames at the bottom and the orange rocket booster at the back!
The runner-ups will receive a prize pack containing 1x 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs & 1x 10703 Creative Builder Box!
Congratulations to the 3 winners! It was a really tight field of competition, and it was really difficult picking these designs, but these stood out by being the most charming, and demonstrated really clever and effective use of only 2 x 4 bricks!
I’ll be in touch over email in the coming days to sort out the delivery of prizes!
I also want to feature all the entries that came in, as there were some really fun and excellent designs here as well!
Thanks to everyone for joining in! I hope to do more build challenges like this in the future. As always, giveaways and competitions like these are made possibly entirely by your support, which I’m forever grateful for.
Hope you guys got to build with LEGO on 2×4 Day!
Check out some of the other awesome entries below 🙂
VaderFan2187’s LDD design, “dedicated to a really awesome LEGO blogging website!”
(Thank you so much for this! I need to recreate this with bricks!)
Braden M’s “shield with the face of a dragon on it. It was made entirely out of 2 x 4 bricks of only three different colours: red, orange and black.”
Brad R “Giant remote controlled teenager. Because which boy wouldn’t want something that they think they can control, but they’re never quite sure…”
Astri R “A rocket ship with a cheeky alien flying through space.”
(Love the use of the Kryptomite used here!)
Freya R “A big, scary Tyrannosaurus rex.”
Arnav O “2×4 Bit Swordsman”
Amelia C “people celebrating the importance of 2 x 4 bricks. The person at the front is taking a picture of his children”
Vin W “2×4 bricks create unlimited creativity and possibilities. For me, the element is the greatest present to us by Lego.”
Tom M “Ironman is missing bricks from behind his back so please don’t look back there. He has eyes in the back of his head (literally) so he’ll know if you do!”
Simone H “Jays Brick Blog is the place to be !
Information , reviews and tips all for free !
We would like to raise a glass and a cheers will be said !
But this one won’t earn me a hangover and shall save my head !

(I’ve never had someone write a poem for me. Thank you!)
Sarah T “This is a double sided Minifigure bust. The side with the blue shirt is inspired by classic Minifigures with caps and the other side is a jogger with a headband.”
(I thought this reversible minifig head was really clever! I’m going to have to build one of these myself)
Matt H “It’s a cut-out of Ole Christiansen’s house, because it’s the most important part of LEGO’s history because his house is where LEGO started. I also added a red 2 x 4 because it’s the first LEGO piece.
The community stands strong
With bricks we rebuild”(Brilliant! The resilience of the Brits is unmatched!)

Chloe “This is a house in the shape of a lollipop with a hallway (stick white) with a bed, a table and a chair.”
Nicolas D “a pompom shooting machine. It is remotely controlled and shoots pompoms out of the orange-yellow end. They shoot out when you push the blue block.”
Thanks everyone for the great entries!
Awesome ❣ My Grandson enjoyed your blog, keep up the amazing shares❣
Thanks for letting me know! I’m glad he enjoys it and I hope he does so for a long time!
Congrats to the winners!! Looks like a lot of fun was had by all.
If you look at Tovenaars house, you will see it is Duplo not 2×4. Check it out….
(Stolen). ??
I’ve removed it. It was pretty disappointing that someone tried to pass off another person’s MOCs as their own.
Sorry but the entry by Tovenaar is actually something that someone else built. It’s from a house in Massachusetts, USA. I’m not sure where Tovenaar found the photo but the owner recognized that instantly as a picture from inside her house. 🙁 This blog post is being shared around on Facebook and she has seen it.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve removed it and have also been in contact with the original designer 🙂
Thanks heaps Jay! Awesome competition! And I definitely used only 2x4s. Took heaps of time to collect and pick them all out. The spaceship is also removable in one piece from the baseplate. So excited to have received a prize 🙂
Congratulations! It was a really cool creation and I’m so glad that I got to show it off!
We went to a 2 x 4 Day event and saw some awesome stuff. Not in time for your contest unfortunately but there was a lot of coolness out there. Congrats to everyone who participated!
The Tetris design is awesome and I really like the color combo. Good runner-up design selections also!
The entries were really fun! Loved that a lot of younger readers got involved!
Congrats to Jeffery
The runner-up entries had broke the rules of the competition. Don’t their entries contains not only 2 x 4 bricks. Plate 16 x 16 and baseplate appeared in the entries. Rules 1: Your task is to build something out of only 2 x 4 bricks.
Wow, I just noticed that too. Wonder what Jay thinks.
Hey Jocelyn, I did think about that, but I made a judgement call on this as the plates/base plates were not integral to the overall design. In fact, if they had enough 2×4 bricks, they technically could make a base out of them. Also, for the rocket, it could probably stand on its own without the baseplate, but for the sake of photography/posing it, it does make sense to place it on a baseplate.
Hope that clarifies my decision!
Oh well o tried. Happy 2×4 day jay! Congrats to all the winners!
It was a really good effort! Thanks so much for participating!
Congrats to the winners!
I wasn’t expecting to win, but still happy to see my entry there 🙂
I had to download LDD to open the file! Thanks so much, that was really nice of you 🙂
No problem! It was fun to make 😀
On behalf of Antonia, thank you.
She did awesome. Congrats!
(you know she’s not going to let me live it down, her having beaten me! haha)
But you are extremely proud of her right??? Heh
She has been well-taught!
I like the 1st place entry, but the space shuttle isn’t completely 2 x 4 bricks. I found some 2×3 and 2 x 2 bricks. Congrats to Jeffery he’s an awesome builder!
Ah, I’m pretty sure I checked and it looked like it was entirely made out of 2×4 bricks. There were additional photos with other angles, and from what I can tell, it looks like it’s all made out of 2×4 bricks.
