Minifigures On Holiday – Great Ocean Road

June 4, 2014 By Jay 2 Comments

Pardon the brief hiatus but I just got back from a short holiday! To celebrate my birthday, my wife put together a surprise trip to one of my favourite places in the world, the Great Ocean Road. I absolutely adore the scenic views, tearing across the windy roads and the pristine beauty of nature that the Great Ocean Road offers. I love the coast and it remains one of the most majestic places that I’ve visited in my life.

Taking a leaf out of LEGO Travellers, an Instagram account that tells the story about one couple’s journey to different destinations in minifigure form, I decided to pack some minifigure versions of me and the missus as well for this trip to snap some LEGO-themed photos. I wish I could be on perpetual holiday but alas, my lust for LEGO sets needs to be financed somehow!

LEGO 12 Apostles

Tourist-crazy spots like the 12 Apostles aside, we got a little intimate with mother nature and trekked to waterfalls and even checked out Otway Fly, a rainforest canopy adventure place which allows you to traverse the forest via a treetop walk which puts you way up high among the trees.

Tall Mushroom

June in Australia heralds the beginning of wet winter weather, which was a pleasant surprise as we managed to encounter a wide variety of fungi and mushrooms that had sprouted up due to the moist conditions. They made for incredible macro photography with my minifigures, which handily enough have their own camera! I’m not the best photographer nor do I have the best equipment but I’m pretty happy with how the photos turned out.

LEGO Macro Photography

This is one of my favourite shots and I daresay, I was quite impressed with myself for taking this one! Read any feature about photographers and one theme unites them all, it sometimes takes that little bit of special luck to snap a once-in-a-lifetime picture. This won’t win any prizes but I was very pleased when a little bug landed on the mushroom (and minifigure version of myself!) when I was setting up this shot.

LEGO Minifigures on Rock

Moss and tiny bits of detail really come to life when you shrink yourself down to minifigure size.

Watch for falling trees and snakes

I saw this sign in one of the parks which I thought was pretty comical. Death by falling tree or death by snakes!

Cool Mushrooms

It seemed like new fungi occurred every few feet that we walked and the amazing biodiversity of something as simple as these mushrooms left me in awe throughout our trek in the forest.

Ferns

Here’s LEGO-me stuck in some ferns. At least he looks happy!

Snapping the 12 Apostles

Parting shot of the wife snapping some photos of the 12 Apostles. She’s a way better photographer than me and she snapped some really beautiful shots of the coastline and the Apostles. I felt that bringing my LEGO alone and posing them as if they were taking photos of these sights made for an interesting parallel – I always feel really small when I’m near the ocean. I wonder how small LEGO minifigures would feel.

I snapped way more photos and if you want to check the rest of the album out, head on over to the Jay’s Brick Blog Facebook page! I hope to do this more often whenever I go on my next holiday or if I go somewhere interesting. Hope you like the photos!

Up next, here's a quick look at the @lego Captain Up next, here's a quick look at the @lego Captain Rex Helmet which comes out in March 2023!

Some really cool techniques here, especially the Jaig Eyes, but unfortunately the mismatched colour stickers just look nasty.

Happy International @LEGO Day! The 28th of Januar Happy International @LEGO Day!

The 28th of January commemorates the date where the first patent for the iconic LEGO brick was filed with the Danish Patent and Trademark Office in Denmark by then-owner Godtfred Kirk Christiansen.

Here's a photo of the patent which is on display in the history section of the @legohouse, which I got to see last year when I visited Billund!

There's tons of incredible historical artifacts, and I've also shared some other displays that commemorated this part of LEGO's history!

I think both helmets are excellent additions to the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 Clone Trooper helmets translate incredibly well, and there are some masterful sculpting techniques and great use of negative space to get the look just right.

I have to say that I much prefer Commander Cody out of the two, because of the 212th's orange markings, and cool features like the visor and fin. Captain Rex, while having some cutting-edge building techniques have some really poorly colour-match stickers which distract from the otherwise great build.

Will you be planning on picking any of these up?

Special thanks to @lego for sending these early review sets over!
