It’s now official – thanks to LEGO.com, we now have more official photos and the product page for the upcoming 40581 BIONICLE Tahu and Takua that you can peruse.
40581 BIONICLE Tahu and Takua will be a gift with purchase when you spend US$95/ AU$170 / £95 / €100 on LEGO.com, but only on City, Monkie Kid, Ninjago, Friends, Classic, DOTS, & Creator 3-in-1, and will be available from 27 January 2022 to 9 February.
While it’s not LEGO Technic and CCBS (Character and Creature Building System), nor does it come in a cool plastic canister, it’s a close enough homage to recognise the Bionicle fanbase and phenomenon which all but saved LEGO from bankruptcy in the earlier 2000s.

Here’s the product description
In 2001, The LEGO Group introduced a new theme that would become a sensation: BIONICLE®. This story of mighty heroes with elemental powers took the world by storm, inspiring comics, novels, and movies.
Now two of the theme’s most popular characters return with this LEGO® Icons BIONICLE Tahu and Takua (40581) set.
The articulated action figures come with a fire sword and a disc-thrower accessory. The set also includes a lava display stand, so you can pay tribute to BIONICLE in your home or office.
Get reacquainted with heroes – Tahu and Takua are articulated action figures of iconic heroes from the LEGO® BIONICLE® theme, complete with a fire sword and a disc thrower
Watch them surf on lava – The set includes a lava display stand, allowing the duo to surf on the rivers of molten lava that flow from the Mangai volcano.
Dimensions: measures over 5 in. (13 cm) high and 2 in. (6 cm) wide
Why do they have to be such a tease? Not using the CCBS? COME ON…. I mean I’ll buy anything if it makes them even think of bring bionicle back. But if this is a test it was poorly thought out. Part of the draw is ccbs system itself.
I don’t think any CCBS-based sets have sold that well the last ten years, though. The rebooted CCBS system was streamlined to reduce costs, but I still got the impression that the sets didn’t sell particularly well. At least not enough to warrant its own separate building system.
And also, I guess the convoluted storyline could be an advantage, as much as a deterrent. I looked up some Bionicle comics once, and despite having read superhero comics for 20-30 years, I was utterly confused about what was going on, and who I was supposed to root for…
Yeah I agree, but hey, if this does well, it will give LEGO a lot of confidence that there is still plenty of love from Bionicle fans.
In the same way Galaxy Explorer and Lion Knights’ Castle proved that there’s a lot of appetite for classic themes.
I never collected bionicle so I don’t have that nostalgic pull with this set. It just looks badly designed. I have a hard time believing people will spend $100 to get this…

Same – I don’t have much of a connection, but at least it isn’t too pricey of a redemption. That said, there are plenty of Bionicle/nostalgic fans so hopefully there’ll be some interest there.
lego bionicle is a horrible theme!
Whoa, a clone of the complaining “Mike Montross” from the other post about this
Thanks Jay is it available here in Aus ? Other currencies are listed ? Thanks
It will be, but I’m not sure what the threshold will be as it hasn’t been confirmed yet!
