LEGO and Nintendo have unveiled the 2022 D2C LEGO Super Mario Set – 71411 The Mighty Bowser, a massive brick-built display model of Mario’s nemesis, Bowser!
This 2,807-piece monstrosity is priced at US$269.99 / AU$399.99, and has a release date of 1 October 2022, and will be available exclusively from LEGO.com or your local LEGO store.

The King of the Koopas is brought to life in this epic scale, and has controllable movements as well as the ability to launch a fireball, reflective of Bowser’s huge and powerful features.
To illustrate just how large it is, the modemeasures over 12.5 in. (32 cm) high, 16 in. (41 cm) wide and 11 in. (28 cm) deep.
The Mighty Bowser, in true LEGO Super Mario style, also has an interactive element. Fans that own a LEGO Super Mario Starter Course can choose to battle Bowser against LEGO Mario, Luigi or Peach, allowing for truly immersive and digitally enhanced play. But watch out – Bowser is armed with a fireball and isn’t afraid to fight back!
The set is designed by Carl Merriam, and makes for the ultimate boss for LEGO Mario.
“Bowser is, quite simply, the ultimate boss – and we’re delighted to announce that we’re introducing this oversized version to the LEGO Super Mario adult line for a little added peril,” said Carl Merriam, Senior Designer, LEGO Super Mario.
Just as defeating Bowser was always the ultimate challenge in the Super Mario games, here we’re challenging fans to build the King of the Koopas from nearly 3,000 pieces. We know they’re up to the task and will be chomping at the bit to get their hands on this great new addition to the Super Mario line.”

I think 71411 The Mighty Bowser looks absolutely brilliant, and makes for a large, imposing display piece with tremendous display presence.
For Nintendo fans, this is a must-buy and I really like just the creative freedom the LEGO Super Mario team have with the D2C sets. Starting with 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System, to last year’s 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block, it really seems like nothing is off the table, and there’s just so much that can be adapted for adult builders.
While this seems quite expensive here in Australia at AU$399.99, with the exchange rate, the set is actually priced in line with the US and UK after conversion, mostly because the AUD is currently so weak. It’s also about the same price as a Nintendo Switch to put things into perspective.

Every year I hope for Zelda sets, and every year I get disappointed.

Oh my! Another one for the wishlist too. I have never played SM but I really love this masterfully designed piece by Lego.
You haven’t played Mario? That’s a huge surprise! It’s a superb design piece – this is going straight on my to buy list.
This is going on the wishlist. It looks about as big as the Question Block? Lego have done a great job recreating Bowser in Lego form. I hope one day we might see something like Peach’s Castle in minifigure scale (with Mario and co. minifigures) or a set like the Observatory from Super Mario Galaxy. If we’re really lucky, maybe even some other Nintendo IPs like Animal Crossing or Legend of Zelda.
This is the kind of stuff I was expecting from this new theme/collaboration when it was announced last year. The sets so far have been disappointing to say the least. However, this Bowser is awesome and the kind of thing I expected before.
I would LOVE a Super Mario Galaxy build. Maybe for next year’s D2C set, or maybe 2023 Mario wave!
The set looks gorgeous and the play features are excellent but it is just so expensive. Problem is the US price is already too expensive for what it is with the piece count. They should have skipped the whole stage and pillars to make it cheaper. Having it cost the same as a switch really brings value into perspective.
I am still waiting for the day they make minifig scale mario sets (especially cheap mario kart sets like microfighter price range!!!) Those would sell like hot cakes and they can keep releasing new characters and different style karts every year from the huge catalog.
