75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader revealed – LEGO wants to charge US$50 for this!?

Overnight, LEGO officially unveiled the new 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader set, depicting a pivotal scene from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, where Obi-Wan and Darth Vader meet again for a brief duel on the planet Mapuzo.

This 408-piece set comes with 4 minifigures, including a new Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, NED-B droid, and new character Tala Durith, who is dressed as an Imperial Officer.

The kicker is… LEGO are wanting you to fork over US$49.99 / AU$79.99 / £44.99 for this set. That’s EIGHTY Australian dollarydoos for 4 minifigures, a grey raised baseplate, and some trans-orange cheese slopes.

You can pre-order the set online now, ahead of a 1 August 2022 launch… but I do not recommend buying this set.

There’s not a lot going on for the set – there are some turntables for Obi-Wan and Anakin to spin around and duel each other, a trolley of lava represented by trans-orange cheese slopes can tip over…. and that’s honestly it.

The rest are a variety of grey and dark grey slopes for the craggy base.

This is essentially a pseudo-Star Wars diorama… but man, LEGO have got to be taking the piss with this set.

Sure, there is the dreaded LEGO Star Wars tax, and inflationary price-increases but LEGO have the gall to cobble a bunch of grey bricks on some plates, and throw in 4 minifigures and ask US$50/AU$80 for it.

Sure, there are 4-named minifigures, and you get the new Obi-Wan, and the NED-B droid does look pretty neat… but this set is such extraordinarily poor value.

In Australia, look at what you can get for AU$80 – proper ships, and vehicles, that while seemingly on the pricier side, are at least standalone minifigure-scale iconic vehicles.

75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader reminds me of 75201 First Order AT-ST, probably one of the worst LEGO Star Wars sets ever released. In 2018, LEGO had the audacity to ask US$39.99 / £54.99 for half an AT-ST.

This new Obi-Wan set has potential to challenge the First Order AT-ST for exceptionally poor value.

Heck, I’m sure Watto wouldn’t take advantage of fans like this.

You can read the comments and reactions of fans to the set on LEGO’s Facebook and Instagram, and they are rightfully getting slammed for the asking price on this.

Look, if you have deep pockets, and US$50/AU$80 doesn’t mean much to you, by all means, pick this set up – but for anyone else with a regular budget – give this set a miss.

I would only consider getting this set if it was 40-50% off, because no way is there AU$80 of value in this.

I’m not sure what could salvage this set – maybe a more elaborate fire/lava scene, instead of just a bunch of cheese slopes, would be good, and maybe if they included one Stormtrooper.

Avoid this set, save your money and pick up 2x Dark Trooper Attacks for almost the same price.

Extremely disappointing, and this makes me afraid to see the upcoming price of LEGO Star Wars 2022 sets…

What do you think of the pricing of 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader? How much would you pay for a set like this?

probably Disney trying to claw back the money they blew on a terrible TV show

  2. Earle says:

No kidding… The one I won’t be getting anytime soon…

  3. Gregory Parsons says:

People have been complaining about Lego prices for years, and I resisted. The value for what you got was strong. Lately though – the prices are out of control. This is a $34.99 or maybe $39.99 set in my opinion – and only because of the minifigs.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, this is also a function of being a LEGO fan for some time – you get “conditioned” to the good old days, but this one here is just a poor set. Strong minifigures, but the blandness of the model doesn’t really scream spend US$50 on me.

  4. Crob says:

Honestly, Disney is the worst thing to happen to Lego. even since they took over the Star Wars Franchise there has been an increase in price for all those sets, and honestly a downgrade is build quality, design and value.

    • Jay says:

They make about $20bn in revenue from licensing, so you’re not wrong.

This will likely never be disclosed, but I also have a sneaky suspicion that with LEGO’s new Star Wars agreements, their license fees must’ve gone up as well.

  5. Vector says:

Tear out all that “scenery” junk and I just MIGHT pay US$15, $20 if they must, for it.

    • Jay says:

Look, for $35, it’s all right. At the very least if this goes on sale, the grey bits will be handy for terrain/MOC builders

      • Vector says:

Problem is the grey bits don’t seem to add much. There’s just too much bulk in the grey flooring when the focus should be the action, which on its own would be a perfectly fine US$15-20 value. They really should’ve either put more pieces into the action-y bits, or taken out some rocks and lowered the price. 🫤 I agree, this is best on sale.

        • Jay says:

And bigger fire bits! It also needs some height – too much of the plastic is used for the slightly elevated floor, which is a bit of a waste – something that can be achieved with a regular grey baseplate.

  7. Liam Jordan says:

Honestly….I’d say this Is WORSE than the FO ATST.

The pricing is an absolute joke and it does not bode well for the future (and apparently this is the price BEFORE the dreaded upcoming price increase, so it could end up being EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE come September) That is absolutely f*cking criminal. I pray, pray, this set shelfwarms and bombs. But I think a lot of people will end up buying it, just for the new Obi and Ned-8 figures.

44.99 here in the UK (which given the piece count isn’t actually all that bad), but it’ll take an extreme discount for me to buy this. 50% at a minimum

    • Jay says:

A price increase on this would be ludicrous, but not outside the realm of possibility.

The piece count is quite deceptive because there are so many trans-orange cheese slopes – I would’ve been slightly more amenable if the “fire” would’ve been more creative and larger, but this is just meh.

  8. Adele says:

You’re just paying for the new Obi fig and some grey bits really. Laughable.

Ive bought better sets for $15.

  9. Adam Ryan says:

I wonder if this will end up on FB marketplace for about half the price down the track… or discounted through Amazon etc.

This probably should have been a GWP set and spend reasonable $ get it.

  10. Stephen says:

Lego has gone crazy with these price increases. The amount they are asking no longer provides value for money which is exaggerated in sets like this. They have already done this with some City sets, apparently Speed Champions and Duplo will be going up in price as well and now Star Wars. What next?

Would you happen to know if the Ferrari Daytona SP3 will be getting a price increase? It is already expensive at it’s release price but if it gets a price increase it may not be worth purchasing.

I’m extremely disappointed with Lego at the moment and am possibly looking to get out of the hobby because I just can’t afford it anymore.

    • Shannon says:

Yes it’s getting a price increase.

There’s a link floating around to a German site which shows all the sets getting increases and the % – if I recall it’s headed for a 13% increase in price.

  11. pmarin says:

I always enjoy your articles even when writing about a “negative” and in this case I agree with you 100% on the pricing and (lack of) desirability of this set. Even if we put the pricing aside (hard to do at $50), but I can’t see the target market for this. As you say it’s glorified minifig kit (the same like we used to get for USD $10-15) but at least it’s got a pitiful structure to go with it. The turntables are kind-of cool. For this price they should be motorized and controlled by the sucky bluetooth app (;-)). I think for kids, if you walked into a store and had a choice of Lego vehicles or spaceships, or this box of “minifigs on a plate” for the same price, I’m pretty sure most kids would go for the playable vehicle/ship. And any “collectors” looking for unique minifigs are going to have a hard time justifying buying this at this price.

In the US at least, we are definitely in a time of “let’s price this as high as we can and see what happens.” I think it’s not just in the US. Clearly LEGO is on this path as well. There are justifications for price increases which are valid and we all see in labor and transportation costs, so there’s some validity to that. But ultimately Lego “toys” (hate to call them that but it’s what they are) become discretionary spending.

  12. Reader says:

First the City sets became badly overpriced for what you get and now the Star Wars sets follow. Hope this doesn’t become a trend.

  13. Eric says:

I agree with your reaction. It should have been $40 not $50. I’m guessing Lego thought by throwing in Vader and Obi-Wan they could way overcharge. I bet retailers mark it down at least -20% pretty soon after launch. It’s basically a glorified Minifig set.

  14. Greg says:

They are helping me save money by releasing sets I don’t want 🤣

  15. Luke says:

Yeah, not a fan of Lego’s new second half of the year pricing… as if Lego Star Wars fans weren’t already paying out the nose for the privilege this is just ridiculous…

    • John says:

Inflation just means rich people/companies get richer. If the pandemic inflation and this war ever end, do you think companies lower gas/lumber/Lego etc ever again? Doubt it!
