A Monkie Kid theme park is coming to Legoland Shanghai, opening in 2024!

Construction at the upcoming Legoland Shanghai resort kicked off today in the Jinshan District of Southwestern Shanghai in a groundbreaking ceremony.

Legoland Shanghai is set to open its doors to the public in 2024, and features a Monkie Kid-themed zone, featuring characters, settings and rides based on the Monkie Kid theme.

As it’s opening in 2024, that’s a pretty strong signal that the Monkie Kid theme is going nowhere, and that LEGO will be backing it for a long time, given their absolute focus being on the Chinese market.

The theme park, resort and hotel covers an area of 318,000 square meters, and features eight themed areas covering most of the signature and popular attractions and rides of Legoland Parks around the world.

It shouldn’t be surprising, but LEGO are absolutely serious about China, as Legoland Shanghai isn’t the only theme park that they’re working on – with Legoland Shenzen and also Legoland Sichuan also set to open in 2023.

This builds on LEGO’s already extensive network of brand stores – 291 of LEGO’s 737 brand stores are located in China, and this number is only set to grow further.

Legoland Shanghai Resort under construction

SHANGHAI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Construction of the Legoland Shanghai Resort kicked off Wednesday and the resort is expected to open in 2024, according to local authorities.

Covering an area of 318,000 square meters, the resort is located in the Jinshan District of southwestern Shanghai.

The facility will include eight themed areas covering most of the signature and popular attractions and rides of Legoland Parks around the world.

The resort will also integrate local cultural elements such as setting up a Monkey-King-themed zone that takes on references from traditional Chinese architectural style and natural landscape.

With an investment totaling 550 million U.S. dollars, the resort is funded by several parties, including China’s state-owned assets.

“The LEGO brand has increased its presence and contribution in China in the past few years,” said Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, executive chairman of the LEGO Brand Group. “We have been thrilled with the positive response the LEGO brand has received in China,” he added.
