First impressions of Pixar’s Lightyear LEGO sets!

Yesterday night, we got our first look at the small wave of sets from the upcoming Pixar movie, Lightyear, chronicling Buzz Lightyear’s early days in command, which is a prequel/origin story for the iconic space ranger.

There are 3 sets in the wave, which have a release date of 24 April 2022, and will be available on LEGO.com, or your local toy or department stores.

There is so much to love with these sets, from the incredibly well-designed box art, to the classic space-inspired Spaceship, and most of all – the accessible prices of all sets in the theme.

In an age of rising living costs, and so many LEGO fans getting priced out of the latest and greatest, it’s honestly really encouraging to see these sets aimed at kids, that us adults can also enjoy.

Rest assured, I’ll be picking up the entire wave at launch, and can’t wait to put these next to my collection of Classic Spacecraft!

76832 XL-15 Spaceship

Piece Count: 497
Price: US$49.99 / AU$79.99 / £44.99 / €49.99 / CAD$64.99
Minifigures: Buzz Lightyear, Darby Steel, Mo Morrison, Sox

I am in love with this utterly gorgeous spaceship, that pays homage to Classic Space, with the brand new trans-yellow canopy.

I’m also getting very heavy nnenn Vic Viper vibes from this, and I love that despite being billed as an 8+ set, it comes with a UCS-esque display plaque.

This is an absolute winner, and I’m definitely picking this up. The best part is the price, coming in at that magic under US$50 price point. So much to love here, and will be getting this on day one.

Director of Lightyear Angus MacLane is also a massive AFOL, and is understandably very excited to play a part in bringing this set to life.

76831 Zurg Battle

Piece Count: 261
Price: US$29.99 / AU$49.99 / £24.99 / €29.99 / CAD$39.99
Minifigures: Buzz Lightyear, Izzy Hawthorne, Sox, E.R.I.C.

I’m astounded at the price of the sets, as these are so accessible. 76831 Zurg Battle is here for the mech fans, but also gives you Buzz Lightyear and Izzy Hawthorne in their iconic white, green and purple Space Ranger suits.

It’ll be hard to say no to this one as well, and I really love the new yellow cat!

76830 Zyclops Chase

Piece Count: 87
Price: US$19.99 / AU$32.99 / £17.99 / €19.99 / CAD$24.99
Minifigures: Buzz Lightyear, Izzy Hawthorne

This one’s for the kids (being a 4+ set), but still has great value, plenty of cool printed elements, and main characters Buzz Lightyear and Izzy Hawthorne.

I was pretty surprised to hear that there would be Lego sets based off this movie, but I’m really surprised at how charming they turned out to be. I may have to pick them up if only for the sweet armored torsos and new helmets on the supporting characters– I can see myself using those for lots of other things!

Yeah, same – as they’re really aiming at kids and families, I’m just glad the prices aren’t too crazy.

More space armour, elements are always a good thing! I’m just not sure about Buzz’s suit, but that’s an easy fix with the old one.

When I saw the XL-15 SPACESHIP my first thought was: the Viper! (from Battlestar Galactica)

  3. Corey McCandless says:

I really like the stand design for the XL-15. I’m going to try to copy it for some of my smaller star fighters.
