At long last, we finally have our first look at the set images from the much-anticipated LEGO Ninjago Movie courtesy of Hoth Bricks and Promobricks. The Ninjago Movie is LEGO and Warner Bros’ next big blockbuster film from The LEGO Cinematic Universe and will hit cinemas on 22/21 September 2017. If you haven’t seen the trailer, be sure to check it out and my thoughts in this post.
Update: The LEGO Ninjago Movie sets and Minifigures are now on sale! Check them out on LEGO.com or your local toy store! Direct links to each product have been added below. You can also check ’em out on Amazon if that’s your preferred way to shop.
I called the Ninjago Movie trailer dope and I’m very optimistic about the movie – definitely believe that it’s going to be much better than the LEGO Batman Movie and will surprise most fans. I just have a very good vibe from it.
Anyway, here’s a bunch of photos previewing The LEGO Ninjago Movie sets which have a release date of August 2017.
LEGO 70606 Spinjitzu Training – 109 pieces
- 70606 Spinjitzu Training – US$15.99
- 70606 Spinjitzu Training – US$15.99 [Amazon]
- 70606 Spinjitzu Training – £8.99
- 70606 Spinjitzu Training – AU$15.99
The smallest set of the wave (not counting polybags is 70606 Spinjitzu Training which includes Kai and Zane minifigures. You get small parts of a dojo for them to practice their Spinjitzu skills as well as a healthy amount of weapons and accessories. I really like that we get 2 main characters in an inexpensive set and this should be a really popular set for fans and those wanting to dip their feet into the theme.
70607 Ninjago City Chase – 233 pieces
- 70607 Ninjago City Chase – US$19.99
- 70607 Ninjago City Chase – US$19.99 [Amazon]
- 70607 Ninjago City Chase – AU$29.99
- 70607 Ninjago City Chase -£14.99
70607 Ninjago City Chase is the second smallest set and features a busy Ninjago City street scene disrupted by Ninjago City Police chasing down a criminal. For a small set, it comes with 5 minifigures including 2 main characters – Lloyd Garmadon, Nya, Shark Army Thug, Ham and Officer Toque.
I really love the shopkeeper and his seafood/fruit stall as well as all the cool little street signs.
Update: Now that we have better photos, the police rickshaw actually looks pretty cool!
LEGO 70608 Master Falls – 312 pieces
- 70608 Master Falls – US$29.99
- 70608 Master Falls – US$29.99 [Amazon]
- 70608 Master Falls – AU$44.99
- 70608 Master Falls – £24.99
As the trailer suggested, Ninjago City isn’t the only setting that we’ll visit in the movie and 70608 Master Falls takes us to the great outdoors of the Ninjago wilderness as we witness Sensei Wu do battle with Garmadon in an epic fashion along a rickety bridge.
Also included is a Kai minifigure and a Skeleton.
While it’s a small set, I do like that it looks like a self-contained scene as well as a really nice mix of rocky cliffs and ruins.
70609 Manta Ray Bomber – 341 pieces
- 70609 Manta Ray Bomber – US$29.99
- 70609 Manta Ray Bomber – US$29.99 [Amazon]
- 70609 Manta Ray Bomber – AU$44.99
- 70609 Manta Ray Bomber – £24.99
The villains are probably going to steal the show and their hilarious fish-themed minifigure costumes have really caught my attention. 70609 Manta Ray Bomber included a really cool jet designed in the shape of a manta ray and comes with 4 minifigures – Cole, Shen-Li, Great White, Shark Army Gunner.
The model looks really fun but the highlight of the set is undoubtedly the baddie in the Shark Costume.
70610 Flying Jelly Sub – 341 pieces
Continuing the trend of sea creature-inspired bad guys vehicles is the Flying Jelly sub which includes 4 minifigures – Jay, a Ninjago civilian and 2 baddies which include Hammerhead and Goldfish Bowl guy.
This looks like yet another fun model that featured quite heavily in the trailer.
70611 Water Strider – 494 pieces
- 70611 Water Strider – US$29.99
- 70611 Water Strider – US$29.99 [Amazon]
- 70611 Water Strider – AU$69.99
- 70611 Water Strider – £39.99
The LEGO Ninjago Movie looks set to bring mechs back in spectacular fashion, and Nya’s Water Strider mech, which draws inspiration from pond skaters looks set to be a really fun set. I am very fond of LEGO Mecha which explains my excitement for the movie and the sets, and Nya’s Water Strider looks all sort of cool with its sleek black colour scheme and transparent blue accents.
The set includes 4 minifigures – Nya, Kai, Shark Army Thug, Puffer. The Puffer Fish baddie looks absolutely hilarious and is a must-have for me.
70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon – 544 pieces
- 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon – US$49.99
- 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon – US$49.99 [Amazon]
- 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon – AU$89.99
- 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon – £44.99
One of the most jaw-dropping montages in the Ninjago Movie trailer was Lloyd Garmadon’s (aka the Green Ninja) gracefully flying through the scene. We get a smaller-scaled down version of the dragon which manages to retain its amazing look and boasts all the sand-green parts you could ever want!
The set comes with 4 minifigures – Lloyd Garmadon aka The Green Ninja, Sensei Wu, Garmadon, Charlie. I love that we get so many main characters stuffed into the sets.
This is one of the must-get sets for me because who doesn’t love mecha LEGO sand green dragons? It also probably helps that the model’s design looks spectacular.
70613 Garma Mecha Man – 747 pieces
So it wasn’t strictly the shark mech that was shown off in the trailer, but 70613 Garma Mecha Man still kinda counts as a shark mech. It kinda looks like a cross between a Kaiju and Jaeger from Pacific Rim with the all the shark elements.
I like it as I’m a sucker for all things mecha. it serves as a formidable foe for Kai’s Fire Mech to go up against and it has a pretty fun design.
The set comes with 4 minifigures, Lloyd, Garmadon, a Shark Army Gunner and a Ninjago City civilian.
70614 Lightning Jet – 876 pieces
- 70614 Lightning Jet – US$59.99
- 70614 Lightning Jet – US$59.99 [Amazon]
- 70614 Lightning Jet – AU$99.99
- 70614 Lightning Jet – £44.99
Jay doesn’t get a mech, but instead he gets a sweet Lightning Jet which seems quite large, coming in at 876 pieces. The set includes a whopping 6 minifigures – Jay, Ed, Edna, Crusty, Shark, Army Thug, Jelly.
The jet looks really fun and I love the antennae and lightning bolts sticking out the wings, but I’m also equally excited about the bad guys which includes a dude with a crab helmet and a guy with a goldfish bowl on his head.
70615 Fire Mech – 944 pieces
- 70615 Fire Mech – US$69.99
- 70615 Fire Mech – US$69.99 [Amazon]
- 70615 Fire Mech – AU$99.99
- 70615 Fire Mech – £59.99
Kai is sort of the defacto head of the Ninjago crew, so it’s not surprising that his Fire Mech gets a lot of love from the designers, topping out at 944 pieces. I can only imagine how large this mech is when built and I’m really excited that we may finally get a decently huge LEGO mech. It’s been too long since the last great Mech – Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech).
The set comes with 6 minifigures – Kai, Zane, Lauren, Henry, Hammer Head, Jelly.
70616 Ice Tank – 914 pieces
Unfortunately there’s only a low-res photo of Zane’s Ice Tank, but from what we can see, it’s definitely on the larger side of things. The set comes with 5 minifigures, Zane, 2 Ninjago citizens and 2 baddies which includes a dude with a hysterical Anglerfish helmet.
I’m a sucker for tracked vehicles and will definitely get all the large vehicles/mechs from the set so I’m quite excited for this one. It has a very sleek, futuristic yet unique look to it as well which seems really cool.
Update: Oh hey, we finally have higher res images of Zane’s Ice Tank from the LEGO Ninjago Movie! The details are really striking and I’m a huge fan of the colour scheme. I really love the flags AND the huge translucent chamber behind the Ice Tank.
70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon – 1403 pieces
- 70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon – US$99.99
- 70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon – US$99.99 [Amazon]
- 70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon – AU$159.99
- 70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon – £79.99
Every baddie needs his own sinister fortress, which is where 70617 Temple of The Ultimate Ultimate Weapon (great name, btw) comes in. The set features 7 minifigures, which includes all the Jungle Garmadon and all the main Ninjas – Cole, Kai, Nya, Jay, Lloyd, Zane.
I’m concerned that the set looks like its just a facade, so I hope that there’s plenty of rooms and play features built into the back of the set.
Update: Looks like my fears were true. The back looks quite empty.
70618 Destiny’s Bounty – 2295 pieces
- 70618 Destiny’s Bounty – US$159.99
- 70618 Destiny’s Bounty – US$159.99 [Amazon]
- 70618 Destiny’s Bounty – AU$259.99
- 70618 Destiny’s Bounty – £119.99
One of the flagship (heh) sets of The LEGO Ninjago Movie is 70618 Destiny’s Bounty which is probably the best and most detailed rendition of Sensei Wu’s junk-inspired boat yet.
The set includes all seven of the main good guy characters – Kai, Jay, Zane, Nya, Cole, Lloyd, Sensei Wu.
The ship looks stunning and is packed with plenty of gorgeous details that is befitting of the 2000+ piece count. I expect this to be quite huge as well and to make for an exceptional display piece.
There are 2 more sets that don’t have photos, 70613 Garmadon‘s Robo-Shark (which I’m guessing will be a retailer exclusive. Money’s on Toys R Us) and an unannounced D2c (Direct to Consumer) set.
That’s some of my brief thoughts on The LEGO Ninjago Movie sets! I’m really excited for these sets and can totally see myself getting all, if not most of them. The sets look silly, imaginative and most of all pack some really unique and fun designs that is simply a recipe for success when it comes to toys.
The movie clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously (unlike LEGO Batman) and I’m glad that it seems to have translated rather well to the actual LEGO models and sets.
I’d love to know your thoughts on the sets in the comments section. Let me know which Ninjago Movie sets have got your attention and if you’re as pleasantly surprised as me about the awesome designs!
Nice, Jay! I have Ninjago City Chase, and really want Master Falls, but I want to ask you something. Do you know if Kai’s hairpiece is that rubbery crap like the one from 70621? Just wondering.
The “guy with a goldfish bowl on his head” is “Jelly,” apparently a Shark Army version of a jellyfish. The “goldfish bowl” is the bell section of the jellyfish.
i don’t know if I should get the lightning jet or the fire mech? what do you think about this, jay?
I actually already knew about all of these sets. However, the splitting ninja mask is a really cool surprise. Great for stop motion.
I hear that the new ninja masks split in two. Is that true or no?
Yup they do!
When will they release any idea??
These will be released on 1 August 2017 🙂
Hi Jay, the China clone bricks maker Bozhi had its own iteration of Green Ninja Mech Dragon and I would said it did a better job than Lego!! It’s longer with parts count of 1443. Check out the dragon here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1681962048778263.1073741844.1673084802999321&type=1&l=293efa3659
I’m fundamentally opposed to clone bricks but that does look pretty cool. Looks like something an AFOL would MOC up.
These sets look great. My son is just getting into Ninjago, and Destiny’s Bounty looks like it could keep us busy. Master Falls could add to our Island of Doctor Moreau creation as well!
Nice! Those are really good choices. I think your son would love the Green dragon too – that seems to be one of the standout sets in this wave.
These look amazingly cool! I’m trying to get everything the Lego Batman movie, but now going 2 have 2 juggle 2 themes with a TON of sets.(that was a lot of 2’s?) They all look soooo cool! I can’t believe the water strider is going to be $30.00 only, it looks about forty to sixty bucks? Definitely going to be the best $30.00 set ever. I wish the dragon would have been full scale, kinda like the same issue with the scuttler? Still very super cool! I am waiting for these, Teen Titans Go! Dimensions, and the old fishing store?
Haha yeah, LEGO are making it extremely hard to pick and choose this year. Hopefully as hype dies down for the LEGO Batman Movie sets, you’ll be able to grab some of the outstanding sets at a discount!
I’m definitely going to be getting most of the Ninjago Movie sets too, heh.
I love the green dragon. Also spinjitsu training.
By the way, it is now confirmed that the 70619 will be the ToysRUs exclusive and that it will be the Garmadon Shark, right?
that at least would seem to fit, since the 70619 was missing and the 70620 is the D2C set.
Yup, pretty much! It was mentioned in a press release that its a TRU exclusive.
Ninjago City D2C set has been revealed. OMG! Its off the chart! I hope the movie is even half as good as the sets.
Off the charts indeed!
What about the black mech with the huge single tyre that was in the trailer?? Lego didnt make it?
🙁
Yeah, Cole’s mech is suspiciously missing. I’m guessing it’ll make an appearance early next year?
I am can imagine a giant mech battle in the city and already love it.
Closest we’ll ever get to LEGO Pacific Rim!
Talking about films… DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT LORD GARMADON IS HOLDING A LAZER POINTER IN THE DRAGON SET? IT’S A LAZER POINTER!
Yeah, I really did the keychain!
Hey Jay there are even more images here, some of which you left out: https://vaderfan2187.wordpress.com/2017/06/16/even-more-images-of-the-lego-ninjago-movie-sets/
Haha nice! I finally came around adding them 🙂
I’m waiting on the rest of the minifig photos before I add those!
I am gonna try to build some of these in LDD!
Sounds like a fun endeavour!
Wow. I’m looking forward for the 70617 set. It has all the ninjas and the big baddie. I’ll get Sensei Wu in 70608 to complete the goodies.
70607 looks nice if you want to make a diorama of some sort because of the stall and the little tricycle.
70618 is very tempting because of complete goodies but if the ninjas don’t have their respective hairpieces, I’ll pass it up.
Still, this range is very very good because of how the builds look. Value for money looks great to me. Man, I gotta start saving up for these guys 😀
I really like 70618. The ninja’s don’t get their masks in 70617…
Nice choices! Same here, really rooting for LEGO to knock the movie out of the park!
Jay, how do you feel about the molded head of the Mech Dragon? Some people prefer brick-built dragon heads.
Personally, I love the Fire Mech, the Destiny’s Bounty–and the police rickshaw!!
I like it! Most of the recent dragons have been brick-built, but the moulded head feels like a really nice throwback to the early Ninjago dragons!
Drc set is destiny’s bounty, and you forgot to mention dragon when talking about it’s appearance in the trailer.
Wrong. D2C set is not the Destiny’s Bounty.
D2C is 70620, and I believe it’s Ninjago City.
Oh oops. i just realized I skipped over the destiny’s bounty part of this review by accident. Yeah, it’s confirmed ninjago city.
“preview not review”
Wildcard guess – it’s going to be a giant Megazord/Voltron-like mech with all the vehicles joined together.
No. It’s ninjago city.
Yeah I know. Was just fantasying what an awesome D2C set would look like 🙂
Hmm, pretty sure there’s a yet to be announced D2C set. Those don’t typically get revealed by retailers.
LEGO had a version of Destiny’s Bounty made in 2015, LEGO 70738 Final Flight of Destiny’s Bounty. Cloned by a Chinese knock brand released as LEPIN 06020 at lepinbrick.com. The boat set this time is definitely much better and impressive. I hope there would be a knock off set too at cheaper price.
Knock off sets, really? ?
Thank you Jay for the pictures! I’m definitely getting spinjitzu training, but the others I doubt I will get. The prices will be for spinjitzu training $13. jelly sub attack and city chase will be $20-25. The green mech dragon and Nya’s water strider will be $35-40. Master falls and the manta ray bomber will be $30-35. Kai’s mech and titanium turbo will be $60-70. All of these are estimates and use U.S dollars.
You’re welcome! The prices seem fair. You sure you’re not picking up the Green Dragon Mech? Seems like the standout set in terms of overall value.
I have zero connection to Ninjago but Lego keep releasing sets in this series that I desire…a lot. Between Temple of Airjitzu and now the Ninjago movie sets (particularly Destiny’s Bounty and the Mech) I’m finding it very hard to resist!
That’s the mark of a really well-designed set. Remove the minifigures and see how well it stands on its own. The Ninjago Movie sets mostly accomplish exactly that.
Really glad that we’re on the cusp of a Ninjago renaissance!
As is frequently the case with ninjago sets, I’m gonna have to pick up Destiny’s Bounty not because I care about the theme in the slightest, but because its absolutely gorgeous. Other than that, the only thing here that interests me is the lion-dogs in the temple,
Yup, that’s what I really love about the Ninjago theme. It has strong, charming characters that appeal to younger fans, but that doesn’t compromise the set designs!
Never mind, got to append my last entry, Destiny’s Bounty is a must!
I do think the Ninjago movie will be fun, but I did absolutely love the Lego Batman movie! (Had to leap to its defense. It did perform quite well in the U.S.)
Three of the above sets jumped immediately on my list: Manta Ray Bomber, Flying Jelly Sub, and Green Mech Dragon. The first two combine my love of Lego critters with cool vehicles; what a neat combo! The Mech Dragon is just awesome! Destiny’s Bounty looks amazing as well. I do love ships and it’s such a large scale, impressively designed one, but gotta see where my Lego budget is after the UCS Millenium Falcon…
We should all celebrate the fact that we got 2 major LEGO films in one year. Everyone wins!
Yeah Destiny’s Bounty is a clear winner in terms of design. Man, that one is really going to hurt the wallet.
Hey Jay did you know that the LEGO Ninjago Movie comes out 1+ months later in the UK? XD
That’s so silly :/ I guess they could always hop on the plane to the Netherlands to catch it…
“(Had to leap to its defense. It did perform quite well in the U.S.)”
Well maybe cos it was released on time there…
SCRRRRREEEE hahaha why does Lego make all these good sets! I’m already pulled by the modulars, new jungle city line, and the Lego Batman Movie Sets- this just adds fuel to the fire! The green mech dragon, destiny’s bounty, the fire mech, and both badguy ocean vehicles look amazing, I’m not usually a Ninjago guy but these sets are VERY tempting.
Haha, I know how you feel. I think its great as the second half releases are more than pulling their weight – making up for the weak first half offering (except for LEGO Batman).
I really hope the movie does well in terms of convincing LEGO fans to look pass the “kiddy” reputation that Ninjago has developed over the years. It’s essentially Exo-Force on steroids.
Hopefully my decision not to start buying Ninjago sets survives the Ninjago Movie release. My Lego budget can’t stretch that far…
Sacrifices must be made!
Oh wow . . . the sets all look awesome, but with piece counts like those, they’re all going to be super expensive and out of my budget. I’m definitely going to get the Mech Dragon, and probably the smaller sets . . . but stuff like the Lightning Jet and Fire Mech is definitely not on the charts. And god, I want the Bounty, but it has even more pieces than the Temple of Airjitzu. 🙁 Any word on AUD prices?
No confirmation on Australian pricing… but from the European prices, they seem to be fairly priced, especially for what you’re getting.
I’ll update on AUD prices when I get them, which is usually a lot closer to the release date!
Destiny’s Bounty and Green Mech Dragon are my absolute standouts.
My bold call, my kids will feel about these two sets, the same way I feel about the Galaxy explorer.
Ninjago the theme that keeps getting better
“Ninjago the theme that keeps getting better”
Yup. I’m really awed that they keep raising the bar over and over again.
