Get your keys ready – LEGO 21327 Ideas Typewriter teaser has dropped!

UPDATE: The LEGO Ideas Typewriter has officially been revealed!

LEGO have begun to tease the upcoming LEGO Ideas set – 21327 Typewriter, which means that an announcement and reveal is imminent!

The set is rumoured to weigh in at 2,078 pieces, and will retail for US$199.99 and is based off Steve Guiness’ Typewriter submission. If Steve Guinness rings a bell, it’s because he was the winner of the first season of LEGO Masters in the UK, and has an awesome account on Instagram showing off his creations and MOCs.

To get a taste of what to expect from the final model, be sure to check out Steve’s 10K Club Interview on LEGO Ideas – I’ve highlighted some of the most interesting portions below – I can’t wait to see what the LEGO Design team does with it, and how closely they adapt the mechanical functions that Steve designed.

Where did your interest in this particular model come from?
I originally came up with the idea as part of a build on the LEGO Masters competition, which I then modified and improved to make it in to the LEGO Ideas submission.  My hope is that it is something totally different from anything that LEGO has ever done before, it showcases that fact that you really can make anything out of LEGO and it will hopefully bring nostalgia to adult fans like me, and wonder and curiosity to younger fans who might not have ever seen a real typewriter!

What special challenges did you face creating the model? What was the most difficult part to recreate?
I have thought a lot about the keyboard layout, and come up with a number of different variations. Eventually I decided to limit the overall size of the typewriter and so therefore had to make some compromises with the keyboard layout. I will be very interested to see what the LEGO design team do with the design and look forward to working with them to continue to improve the design if my idea is selected in the final review.

What is your favourite building technique or part/section that you’ve incorporated into your Product Idea?
I am really pleased with the mechanical part of the design, and the way that the hand crank works. It produces a realistic movement and also a great clicking sound that really reminds me of a real typewriter.

Do you think the LEGO Ideas Typewriter will exceed or be below your expectations? What’s the one thing you’d like to see from the final model?

Oh blimey. I’m sure Lego.com is going to crash with all the stuff that’s getting added to my wish list. I’d be happy with this as is, I hope they haven’t cut too many corners.

  2. Cameron says:

I am so excited for the typewriter to be available in the US! I first read about it about a year ago when I began work on the Lego Grand Piano!

Something about this I just love. I passed on the Daily Bugle to put my budget towards the typewriter and the new Taj Mahal. Can’t wait to see final outcome pictures and have it in my hands.
