LEGO Comic Books coming in 2022 via partnership with Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead & Invincible)

Skybound Entertainment, multiplatform content company that’s best known for The Walking Dead, and Invincible has announced a new partnership to launch LEGO-branded comic books.

The first comic book series out of the partnership will debut in 2022, published by Image Comics and Skybound.

This is quite an interesting move by LEGO, as it taps into a whole new demographic and audience, and I especially like that Skybound has incredible pedigree judging by how good the Invincible comics and TV series has been.

If you haven’t watched Invincible on Amazon Prime, you should check it out, especially if you enjoy hyper-violent content that puts a fresh spin on superhero stories.

Each title will be a portal to the endless worlds accessible in every LEGO play session, created to inspire the LEGO builders, readers, and thinkers of tomorrow,” said Sean Mackiewicz, Senior Vice President, Editor-in-Chief at Skybound Entertainment.

“Comic Books form a key component of the LEGO Books publishing strategy to bring LEGO stories to young readers everywhere,” said Eric Huang, Vice President and Publisher at AMEET. “Skybound is the perfect LEGO Books comics partner. They’re as passionate as we are about publishing books that encourage creativity and play.”

Skybound’s first venture into the LEGO Group’s vast library of intellectual property will be announced in the coming months. For updates follow Skybound on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Judging by the language used in this announcement, it does look like Skybound will tap into LEGO’s library of IP. LEGO and AMEET have previously worked on Ninjago Comics series, so I could realistically see Ninjago being part of this partnership, as well as new IP being developed.

As for slightly unrealistic but wishful thinking would be for LEGO to also adapt Skybound properties like The Walking Dead or Invincible into LEGO sets. The partnership doesn’t make any mention of construction toys, but it does open the door to a licensing agreement.

I have my doubts if this will happen, mostly because of how graphic (heh) and violent the content of The Walking Dead and Invincible is, but if LEGO can produce a Punisher minifigure in The Daily Bugle, why couldn’t they take on Invincible?

It would definitely make sense as Invincible has had an incredible critical reception, and is one of the best new TV shows of 2021 and aligns well with LEGO’s intention to target adults.
