LEGO CON 2023 will not be happening.

Some sad news – LEGO CON, the live-streamed virtual LEGO Convention will not be happening in 2023, following news shared on the LEGO Ambassador Network.

It’s difficult to say if LEGO CON will make a return, under a different format or in a different way, but it looks like the team responsible for the show are going back to the drawing board.

That said, LEGO CON 2023 is not happening, but there wasn’t any definitive answer whether “LEGO CON” will continue or not, so let’s not award it Vidiyo-status quite yet.

It was pretty trendy to hate on LEGO CON 2021, the inaugural one event which was livestreamed through pandemic lockdowns, but LEGO CON 2022 was an immense improvement, and dare I say, a pretty electrifying event.

With it being the 90th Anniversary, we had a heap of live (and unleaked/unspoiled!) reveals, with 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle and 10497 Galaxy Explorer, as well as the 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum.

Plenty of feedback was taken onboard by the team from the lacklustre 2021 show, and I am genuinely quite sad that we won’t get another event in 2023.

With the state of economy being top of mind for most businesses, I am not surprised that LEGO CON 2023 got cut, as every single business and brand, (including execs and business leaders I know) have been huddled in tricky budget meetings looking for savings, and forecasting a softer 2023, and rewriting and downsizing many of their plans.

As always, marketing and advertising are always the first to get cut, so this isn’t entirely unexpected given the economic headwinds.

That said, I think LEGO CON 2022 was a reasonable success, and is a pretty good template to follow, even for a scaled down version. The livestream has close to a million views as of publishing time, and it’s genuinely exciting to get news, and designer interviews direct from LEGO – as opposed to stuff being leaked by dodgy retailers and unscrupulous LEGO media.

Hopefully, we get to see scaled down versions of LEGO CON for some of the bigger launches and announcements for 2023. I’d love for LEGO to just livestream an announcement of sets, with the designer popping in to talk about it.

Check out my LEGO CON 2022 recap to relive all the great announcements, and highlights.

What do you think of LEGO CON 2023 being canned? Would you like to see something like this make a return?

Lego should Livestream announcement of sets. That would help build the hype. In general fans would love it.

Hopefully Lego con will come back some day. With at least a year break Lego has time to make it even better if they decide to bring it back. Maybe there could be more adult focused parts. Hopefully if they bring it back it could be on a weekday and not Saturday.

I agree it is sad. 2021 was pretty bad tbf, but 2022 was a big improvement and they could have asked Hamish to host this time around ;P

It was cheesy in a great way and I thoroughly enjoyed it (always enjoy seeing the designers talk about the sets), so yeah, I’m sad it see it go.
