The LEGO Ideas team have just announced the Third 2022 Review Results and… Jaws and a.. LEGO Cat (yes, a LEGO Cat) have been announced at the next LEGO Ideas sets!
First of all, this is an absolutely hilarious pair of picks from the LEGO Ideas team and I am here for it!
I did predict that Jaws would make it from this round, when Nightmare Before Christmas and the London Telephone Box was selected, but the Cat is such an interesting out of left field ideas!
We won’t know when the sets will be released, but I am really excited for the LEGO Cat. The Jaws selection is the “safe” pop culture pick, and I do like the idea of getting a large brick-built shark and fishing boat.
The LEGO Cat, designed by Damian Andres (aka The Yellow Brick) is a really cool sculpture, and I’m excited to see what LEGO does with this. It fits into the statue/brick-built animal niche, and will appeal to tons of Cat-people.
Suck on that, dog people! Cats rule!
Jaws was ripe for the plucking, given that LEGO once offered fans the chance to vote for a Jaws Brickheadz, so it always felt like the licence had already been an option, and I really like what designer Jonny Campbell (aka Diving Faces) did with the set, especially the brick-built Great White Shark.
Up next, we have the First 2023 LEGO Ideas review to look forward to, with results expected in Fall 2023!
My picks here are Bluey, Ahain, Daft Punk The Robots, Where’s Wally and maybe Catan the Game as the ones that I think will likely succeed!
What do you think of the LEGO Jaws and Cat announcement?

Cat, MINE! 😍

The only cat I would be willing to have in my house

Congratulations to both designers, what an honor it must be! I personally am beyond ecstatic for the Jaws set! I was so bummed when it wasn’t approved the first time it reached the 10K milestone and now it’s even more impressive it was approved the second time around. First day buy for me.

I’m ok with the JAWS set, but I’m not sure what the Lego group was thinking when it picked the cat, who wants a Lego cat?? I was pretty excited when I saw the Nightmare Before Christmas set, but the cat makes no sense to me.

I think the Cat and Jaws sets look awesome! I am especially excited about Jaws because it was the first scary movie I saw as a kid. Great movie. Nice looking LEGO set!

I’m amazed the multi-tool made it as far as it did. I’d root for it, as it seems to be the underdog, but I’d rather the enchanting Narnia design win. Bluey’s a cool idea, but I think the Heeler family themselves would make a great set (with Chilli, Bandit, Bingo, and Bluey), similar to BrickHeads. From the pictures on Lego Ideas, it appears that Bluey’s family cannot fit inside the front door with them being brick-built. Minifigures could solve this problem, but it might require custom-molded parts to include the Heelers’ ears.

Dogs rule! 🙂

I’m really disappointed. I love the cat, but there were so many brilliant designs in this round, I wish they had chosen more.

Dogs have masters, cats have slaves. 😛
Looks like a pass on this Ideas round unfortunately. Upon looking at the finalists again, the results don’t come as too much of a surprise. What felt like the most likely candidates (e.g. Pac Man, Up) are already announced as sets. Full buildings don’t seem to make it in. I’m hopeful the JWST not making it in might mean a JWST set is in the works.
For the next round: It’s hard to pick, especially given there are 71 finalists. Maybe Shrek or Narnia will make it through. I hope Hollow Knight makes it in (bonus – it’s from an Australian developer!) but I think that’s unlikely. An official colour table would certainly be interesting, but again, unlikely.

Oh, Shrek has a good chance. I forgot about that!

I wonder if the Jaws set really will be released as a model shark and fishing boat PLUS a diorama (I do like the edge of the diorama).
If I were to buy the Jaws set it would be for the fishing boat. I already have a perfectly adequate brick built shark in 31088 Deep Sea Creatures.
I am disappointed that the Wright Flyer missed out.
Jay Ong says
I think they’ll have to do both. We don’t really get a lot of of detailed boats at this scale and complexity, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the designers do.
I’d really like there to be some sort of motion with the shark, so if they have it frozen with jaws open, that would be really nice.
Håkan says
I remember from the Jaws movie that the shark was insanely powerful… but is it really constructed in scale to the boat?…
Jay Ong says
These are just the project submissions, so I’m sure the designers will polish it up and tighten the design up. Can’t wait to see the end result!

My dog poops outside, defends her home and responds to command. Your ball cat ‘people’. ;p
Jaws is awesome!
Jay Ong says
People are pretty much in service of cats.

I think that, in the LEGO video game that is called LEGO City Undercover, there are simplified signs that will warn you about being eaten by a shark that are pretty much the Jaws movie poster, but done in LEGO form. Also, please do not ignore those signs in the game because they are there for a reason… trust me on that one.
Håkan says
Hmm, the actual road sign pieces with shark warnings are designed a bit differently, but the Atlantis Treasure Key has a very similar design…
Jay Ong says
Oh nice, i didn’t know that! Sounds fun, and LEGO sharks are pretty iconic
