LEGO looks to be releasing a re-coloured Blue Fiat 500 in 2021!

Wait is that a Blue LEGO Fiat 500? It sure seems so!

UPDATE: LEGO have officially unveiled a new pilot program in the UK offering different colour options including the Blue Fiat 500. Thankfully, it can be shipped internationally from Zavvi

The sleuths over at German fan site Promobricks have unearthed a safety document on LEGO’s servers, which seems to suggest that we’re getting re-coloured versions of 10271 Fiat 500 and 31058 Might Dinosaurs from the Creator Expert and Creator 3-in-1 themes.

There is no release details yet or any other information – all shots here are photoshopped to illustrate what the 2021 Blue Fiat 500 could look like.

The images are grainy, but the document also suggests new set numbers:

  • 77942 LEGO Creator Fiat 500
  • 77941 Mighty Dinosaurs

This is quite an interesting move from LEGO as the Fiat 500 was only newly released in March 2020 (read my review of the LEGO Fiat 500) and it was a fun little addition to the lineup of Creator Expert cars.

To help showcase how the new Fiat 500 in Bright Light Blue looks, I’ve photoshopped photos from my Fiat 500 review and turned them blue.

Interestingly enough, LEGO might have already clued us in on this – if you look at the paint palette from the Fiat 500… you’ll see a bright light blue tile on it. Does this mean that we may also get Lime Green and Red in coming years?

This makes for a really interesting trend of LEGO re-colouring existing and active sets – I’m not quite sure what to make of it. It does seem like a cash grab as it doesn’t introduce or innovate in any way, but the abundance of Bright Light Blue elements does make it a compelling purchase as it’s still a relatively rare colour.

Or as Rambling Brick points out – it could be Medium Blue.

It also makes for an interesting dilemma for collectors – for ardent completionists, LEGO are putting them in a tough spot to buy what is essentially the same car just in a different colour, but at the same time, it also gives people choice between Blue and Yellow, which I can see the appeal of.

In many ways, the recent re-released Volkswagen T2 Campervan also seems to follow this trend, albeit with some slight modifications and not just a straight up recolour.

What do you think of this new trend that LEGO is heading towards, recolouring established sets? Will you buy the Blue Fiat 500 if you already own the original Yellow version?

Be sure to also read my review of the Yellow Fiat 500 from 2020 to see what I thought about Italy’s diminutive Car of the People.
