LEGO Minifigure Factory online beta now live in the US; customise your own minifigures!

For those of you lucky enough to be in the United States, LEGO have quietly launched a Beta of an online version of the Minifigure Factory, a new-ish service that offers unprecedented customisation of LEGO minifigures.

You can access the Minifigure Factory Beta through LEGO.com, and fire up the Minifigure Customisation engine. If you’re not in the US, you can play around with it.

Each minifigure will retail for US$11.99, and there is a limit of 1 per household. As this is still in the beta stage, LEGO are likely trying to understand demand, and get their processes working correctly before expanding this purchase limit further.

The minifigure customisation functions similarly to the online Build a Minifigure, where you can choose from a selection of heads, headwear, legs, and accessories.

The customisation opens are very expansive, and you can choose from different “sticker elements”, prints, patterns and even pre-set outfits – there’s a Classic Space design in the outfit which should excite Classic Space fans.

The text editor also works well, and you can choose from seven different fonts, and adjust the size and position of them however you like.

These designs will be moderated, so LEGO will not allow the use of profanities, vulgar references, hate speech, or extremism, as well as third party logos, names of organizations or trademarks on our customized LEGO® minifigures.

When you’re done, you can just finalise your design, and add it to your cart, and check out normally through the website.

Here are some designs I whipped up.

I’m not sure if the minifigures will come in the special LEGO Minifigure Factory box above. I received these as a gift from The LEGO House, but I expect each minifigure will come in this cool box.

LEGO Minifigure Factories are still relatively rare attractions – you can only typically find them in LEGO Flagship Stores (like the 5th Avenue New York Store), so it’s really amazing that LEGO are opening this to everyone through LEGO.com.

As it’s still in the beta stage, expect a few hiccups but if you’re planning on ordering any of the new August 2022 sets, it might be a good time to customise your own minifigure and add it to your order.

Unfortunately, LEGO Minifigure Factory online is only available in the USA for now. If you try and change the region to Australia or any other country, you’ll be greeted by this holding screen.

Hopefully this beta goes well, and this gets rolled out to as many countries as possible, as many LEGO fans would love to customise minifigures through this.

Special thanks to Kelly for the heads up!

This is now a 404 page, did they kill it off or move it?

  2. Jacky says:

Do they only provide white torso to print on?

    • Håkan says:

There’s a single white plain torso, as well as a hundred-something various shirts, dresses and fantasy outfits to pick froom.

  3. Jimmy says:

Way late to this, but I received my fig. HOWEVER! I actually got the wrong fig -I got someone else’s custom. Lego said to keep it and that they will be sending me out my correct custom fig, apparently they retain all the artwork and other information.

So if anyone out there also got the wrong fig, let’s talk, I’d be happy to ship you the one I have and likewise would love to recover the one intended for me if you happen to have it.

PS the designs (front and back each customisible) are printed onto the white torsos. There is also a 1×3 brick with a QR code on it that appears to be some sort of serial number, it’s not a web address or anything else as far as I can tell.

Gave this a try yesterday after reading your post, Jay. I made a “Happy Birthday” themed minifig for my nephew.

Variety is sorely lacking, something i hope they correct if this ever moves out of beta. Too few head styles, hair pieces, etc.

The one thing I’m concerned about, which isn’t made clear on the Minifigure Factory site or in your post, is whether all of the “sticker” customizations are in fact printed directly onto the torso, or if they’re printed onto a sticker and then applied to the torso. Jay, do you know how that works? For almost $18 shipped, it better be the former.

Re: the packaging, I’m not so sure they’ll be packaged in that cool box. One of the line items in my order confirmation is “Coated Paper, Envelope 219×216″…so I guess it could be that box. or maybe something more simple?

And as someone else mentioned, your link in the post for the Build-A-Minifigure page returns a 404 error.

    • Jay says:

It’s very odd, it seems to work for some people, and not work for others.

To clarify, all minifigure factory minifigs are printed, so no stickers. Let me know how yours turns out! Very interested to see how these are handled!

      • Mark M. says:

Looks like commenter Jimmy has opened his. Mine is gift for my nephew, so it remains sealed…I sure hope it’s the right one!

Also, it did not come packaged in the nicely designed box you included pictures of. It’s more of an envelope.

I also received a survey from Lego about my experience, with many questions about the building experience, available design options, and even what kind of custom packaging I’d prefer.

For the record, my custom minifig’s torso has balloons and a cupcake on the front, and a minifig skull rocking a gold chain on the back.

        • Jimmy says:

Hi Mark, my envelope was closed with a low strength sticky strip -like that stuff that sometimes holds ads inside magazines. You can totally open it to check contents then re-seal.

        • Jay says:

Oh, are you able to share some photos of the envelope and minifigure once its opened? I guess envelopes are much easier to ship without damage than boxes.

  5. Håkan says:

Even the regular online Build-A-Minifig application had some snags, I remember. Not entirely surprising…

  6. Keenan says:

Unfortunately it seems they have some way of checking where you are, since even changing location to us doesn’t let you at least play around with it.

Also the link to the online build a minifigure returns a 404 error

  7. sabreshears says:

I just made one online at our US LEGO site. It was such fun: I can’t wait to get it.

  8. Joshua says:

It’s not up in US today as of 430pm est…wompwomp

  9. Jocelyn R Remus says:

Do you have any word on when Canada will be able to use it?

  10. Nancy says:

I did the 5th Ave mf factory on my last visit to NY – I LOVED it! The additional capability there, I think, is that you can also draw on the torso (I was able to make my ST self). And you got the very cute box for your fig. As one had to sort thru the various hair/head/legs/accessories by hand in the bin – the online is probably better for that.

    • Jay says:

That’s exciting! I’ve always wanted to visit one to try it out. Hopefully they incorporate the drawing element to the online one too, maybe when it’s out of beta.

  11. Dave says:

I keep getting the message “Minifigure Factory isn’t quite ready for you yet. Check back later!”, so I’m guessing this will come and go as they make tweaks. Thanks for the heads-up, though, as this was news to me!

    • Jay says:

That’s odd – it does say the service will go up and down. Hopefully it works again! Maybe try on a different device to see if it works!
