LEGO registers “Brick To The Future” trademark. More Back to the Future sets coming?

This is quite interesting, but a trademark application has emerged on the US Patent & Trademark Office for “Brick to the Future”, a word mark that was filed by both The LEGO Group and Universal.

It’s still too early to say what this could be, as it could be LEGO trademarking a cool headline that it came up with for the launch of 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine earlier this year in April.

Reading into the trademark, it was filed on 19 June 2022, which is quite some time after the launch of the LEGO Icons Delorean, so I don’t think it’s something they’re doing retrospectively.

The trademark covers:

Toys, games and playthings, namely, action figures and accessories therefor, bathtub toys, kites, toy building blocks, board games, action skill games, manipulative games, target games, bubble making wand and solution sets, children’s multiple activity toys, costume masks, mechanical toys, toy vehicles and accessories therefor, dolls, doll accessories, doll clothing, bean bag dolls, toy figures and accessories therefor, play figures, inflatable toys, flying discs, jigsaw puzzles, marbles, plush toys, puppets, ride-on toys, skateboards, balloons, roller skates, toy banks, water squirting toys and stuffed toys; Christmas tree ornaments; water globes; pinball machines; playing cards; hand-held unit for playing electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor; golf and sports balls, stress relief exercise balls

This is really exciting, as LEGO really only trademarks terms that they intend to one day use as themes. Looking through the list of trademarks they’ve filed for, it certainly suggests that LEGO and Universal have much larger plans beyond 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine.

It’s also no surprise, as the Delorean has been a best-seller this year, and has almost been unable to find since launch (in Australia, it’s on back-order till August), so it’s a strong signal that LEGO fans want more Back to the Future stuff, and with an entire trilogy of movies, and so many fun settings, there’s no lack of sets that can be produced.

I’m excited as I’d love more Back to the Future sets, or maybe LEGO might use this as a vehicle to visit older themes, and settings, ala Time Cruisers.

In the Back to the Future Time Machine launch film, we first see the “Brick to the Future” logo, suggesting that LEGO and Universal may have had this planned for a while. In the film, we see the Delorean visit Medieval, Prehistoric and a Futuristic setting, so it might be a clue as to what this theme might entail.

What do you think Brick to the Future is? Would you want a fully-fledged Back to the Future theme?

  2. Mike says:

Can’t blame them, as the BTTF brick/lego line usually does quit well.

  3. Mike budd says:

    Time train please!

  4. JOSH TAYLOR says:

Yes we’d love some more BTTF sets!!

But for now I’d just like the Delorean which here in OZ was underestimated because if you missed the first batch it’s been impossible to find again so yes we are wondering if it will be the same price for those of us who missed the first release ……and believe us….we looked!!!!

The Time Train is THE next logical choice which I think most would agree with.

Another great idea would be a large General Locomotive set that could be an awesome add on to use with the Delorean to recreate the iconic scene…..or a stand alone set with a smaller loco, Delorean and track display.

On a side note, dissapointed in the lack of Ghostbusters Afterlife sets…..where’s my Gozer Temple and Farmhouse sets?

That said, Lego remains epic and we still love you…..even if we do step on them at three am in the morning on the way to the bathroom!!!

GIVE US THE TIME TRAIN, LEGO! 😀

  6. Kat says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a tv series to fit in with this either

  7. A Duffy says:

I would think based on the joint matter of the trademark we are probably looking at a Lego Back to the Future movie or show. Which is awesome.

    • Håkan says:

Yeah. A bit surprising that Lego’d go for a full theme with a movie trilogy that old, even if it still has quite a following. There’s no reboot planned or anything?

      • Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis have already stated they would never make any more sequels. They believe doing so is unnecessary.

      • YTjedi says:

There’s a stage musical debuting soon.

This trademark naming sounds more like they’ll make animated shorts or something. Some 5-20 minute time travel adventures that can explore your favorite time-period based LEGO sets. Maybe some new sets will come of it, like what they did with Jurassic World. Both are under Universal licensing.

        • Jay says:

Oh, didn’t know about the stage musical – that sounds like fun.

This particular trademark covers toys, hence why I feel like more sets could be on the way.

    • Jay says:

That was my initial thought, or maybe a theme park attraction, but the classification mostly mentions toys… hence my suspicions that we might see a fully-fledged theme, hopefully in the not too distant future!

  8. Wim Goris says:

Do I want more )of these) sets in this line ?…. Well, first I would like to be able to buy the time machine; but I think LEGO is being Slytherin here; and decided not to supply NA with any new ones until they are raising the price of the set by 25% first coming August. Pretty “clever” I guess ?

Other than that, yes…. There are some settings like the town park, and definitely the clock tower setting could make for some nice sets. I would be very much interested in the clock tower setting to be a nice modular building. And yes, LEGO, you can make it expensive and I will still buy it.
Just make sure these sets are available right away; I’m still waiting for the time machine ???… 😡

    • Jay says:

They have restocked sparingly here and there, but they seem to be instantly snapped up when they do.

Hopefully with the holiday season coming up, there’ll be a big enough restock for everyone wanting one who hasn’t been able to get one yet.
