Early this morning, LEGO unveiled one of their brand new themes for 2017 – DC Super Hero Girls! Yes, these are DC Super Heroes-themed minidolls. And yes, these are going to be fairly controversial among a certain subset of LEGO fans. And yes, I really dig these and can’t wait for them.
DC Super Hero Girls reimagines classic DC super heroes and villains when they were students at Super Hero High, taking on the form of Minidolls made popular by LEGO Friends and Elves.
The theme will make its first public appearance at New York Comic Con and the first three sets previewed will go on sale on November 27 in the US. It’s unclear at the moment whether this will extend to Australia, but I’ll try and keep you posted once news becomes available.
DC Super Hero Girls have already been a thing for a while – there’s Barbie-like dolls, animated video clips and all sorts of other merchandise, so it kinda made sense for DC to turn them into LEGO.
I think the first three sets previewed look extremely solid and are a lot of fun. The bright pastel colours from Friends are abundant which give these sets a fitting comic book feel and the builds look pretty tight.
The Super Hero minidolls will not be for everyone, but I really love the aesthetics of them and they look to be designed really, really well. In the first three sets previewed, we get a look at Harley Quinn, Batgirl (probably Barbara Gordon), Poison Ivy, Supergirl and Lena Luthor (Lex’s sister).
According to TIME, we will also be getting Wonder Woman, Bumblebee, Katana and a slew of other DC Characters when the entire theme is fully unveiled.
I personally think that these are going to be a huge hit, given how popular Super Heroes and the Friends theme has been with LEGO fans. One of the main criticisms of the core Super Heroes theme is the lack of female characters, so this certainly nudges it in the right direction.
I also feel that these will open up LEGO and Super Heroes to a whole new segment of fans and will provide a fitting gateway for girls to get into Super Heroes. Given that Super Heroes are marketed towards boys and males, it’s nice to see DC and LEGO thinking outside the box and trying to crack into that lucrative female market.
The great news is that if you’re not a fan, LEGO’s lineup of regular Super Heroes characters have all of these characters in regular minifig form, so you can miss out on these and still have these characters into your collection. Hurray for choices!
That said, I’m a boy and I love these and will probably pick up the whole range. My population of Friends Minidolls can now rest easy, knowing that Heartlake City is now under the protection of DC’s mightiest super heroes.
So what do you think of DC’s Super Hero Girls? Let me know in the comments section or take the poll below!
I like the Paintwork and new Hair Pieces these Minidolls bring, but they really don’t appeal to me as much as a proper Lego Minifig does.
That aside, who doesn’t like a female superhero though. i’m glad they get the recognition they deserve so much more now (in films and comics/graphic novels) than they ever did! I mean, back in the day Wonder Woman often found herself crying for help tied to a wooden chair, waiting for someone to come and rescue her.. What?? She’s an Amazon Warrior with Super Speed, Strength, and the ability to Fly, amongst a multitude of other abilities. Never mind her bullet-proof bracelets and lasso of truth. Why would she need to depend upon some dude coming to her rescue.
Maybe they should create some more female hero-based regular Lego sets..
Why do girls need different minifigs? I thought that legi was Gender neutral, but they make separate figures for girls dont girls appreciate the originalminifig ?
It’s an interesting experiment and based on how well the Friends and Elves theme have been performing, it does seem like a natural evolution.

14% say that the hate minidolls. I am in that camp. I do like all the new hair moulds though. I still do not understand why LEGO cannot give girls Minifigures. As a 14 year old boy, I am not the target audience for these products. Little girls will love them, and that is what matters.
But LEGO have already made girl minifigure versions of these characters. Some added variety is pretty nice and for the most part, these look really well designed.
I might get one, maybe. They can’t be any worse than MEGA BLOKS.?
Haha! Nowhere near close!
I think we must always keep in mind that these are Children’s toys. We as adults have been afforded the privilege of being allowed to play with them too. I prefer normal minifigures myself, it these look great, and I am sure they will be a hit with their intended market.
Good point, feedback I’ve heard from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s great to have some variety and to be honest, I’d love some male minidoll versions as well!
Yeah, I just wish we had some male versions to match. But I think the sets look pretty sweet.
Well the male versions can be obtained in the regular DC sets!
Unless you’re referring to male minidoll superheroes. I’d love those as well!
I’m fairly certain my girls will be very interested in these sets. I really like the look of the sets too, especially that gorgeous bat mobile and cafe. That cafe will fit beautifully into our city. However, we know nothing of the back stories, so I think it’s time to hunt down some comics. I have a feeling the older comics will be better than current publications – does anybody have any recommendations?
No comics, but the animated show will get you up to speed. http://www.dcsuperherogirls.com
Warning: the theme song is pretty catchy.
Can confirm. Found myself bopping to the theme song!
There has only been one comic omnibus released so far. It has the story of the cafe rescue and high school settings. Check with your local comic shops.
Apparently the TV series/animated cartoons are pretty good. Check them out on YouTube!
