LEGO set mashups from Japan inspire you to Rebuild your World

November 23, 2021 By Jay 10 Comments

Want some LEGO building inspiration over the upcoming holidays? LEGO Japan have put their own unique spin on the Rebuild the World campaign by mashing up some of the best-selling LEGO sets of 2020 and 2021 into these gorgeous creations.

The idea is pretty simple – combine two LEGO sets for a brand new creation.

The photography and design are pretty neat, so if you’re thinking of a fun activity to challenge/sharpen your LEGO building skills, here’s some gorgeous LEGO inspiration courtesy of LEGO Japan.

You can see more on LEGO’s Amazon Japan store. Many of these sets are currently discounted and on sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2021, so it’s a great opportunity to pick up some if you want to try your hand at these remixes.

If you’re planning on purchasing any of these sets, please use the affiliate links here, as I may receive a small commission with each purchase. It goes a long way in supporting the site! Thank you in advance!

LEGO Cherry Blossom Tree House (21318 Tree House and 10281 Bonsai Tree)

This is my favourite one out of the lot, and possibly one of the easiest to pull off – a mashup of 21318 Tree House and 10281 Bonsai Tree, which utilises all 100x Pink Frogs from the Bonsai Tree to great effect.

It looks like a Cherry Blossom Tree House in full bloom, or that the Tree House is heaving under the weight of a candy pink plague.

Sets used in this mashup:

21318 Tree House – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

10281 Bonsai Tree – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

Jungle Dragon Mech (71738 Zane’s Titan Mech Battle and 71746 Jungle Dragon)

Another neat mashup of two sets that are at the end of their shelf lives is a Jungle Dragon Mech, featuring a combination of 71738 Zane’s Titan Mech Battle and 71746 Jungle Dragon.

The Jungle Dragon’s attractive teal elements are used as armour on Zane’s Titan Mech’s body to great effect here, and the specialised head mould ties it all together perfectly.

Sets used in this mashup:

71738 Zane’s Titan Mech Battle – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

71746 Jungle Dragon – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

Medieval Skull Castle (31109 Pirate Ship and 31120 Medieval Castle)

For LEGO fans into Classic themes like Pirates and Castle, you have the option of mashing up two of the best recent Creator 3-in-1 sets, 2019’s 31109 Pirate Ship and 2021’s 31120 Medieval Castle

It doesn’t seem like it’ll take much work, taking the skull design from one of the alternate builds of 31109 Pirate Ship, and attaching it to the front of the excellent Medieval Castle.

https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6279-1.jpg

I don’t know about you, but this reminds me so much of 6279 Skull Island!

Sets used in this mashup:

31109 Pirate Ship – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

31120 Medieval Castle – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

Monkie Kid Monster Truck (42124 Off-Road Buggy and 80021 Monkie Kid’s Lion Guardian)

Here’s a fun one that blends two different systems, a System build, and a Technic build for great effect!

This mashup, 42124 Off-Road Buggy and 80021 Monkie Kid’s Lion Guardian for a fierce, monster truck, with an emphasis on the monster bit.

As an added bonus, you’ll also likely be able to utilise 42124 Off-Road Buggy‘s RC controls to have your new creation zip around!

Sets used in this mashup:

42124 Off-Road Buggy – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

80021 Monkie Kid’s Lion Guardian – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

Magical Monster Truck Caravan (41688 Magical Caravan and 42119 Monster Jam Max-D)

If that isn’t cutesy enough for you, you can also blend a LEGO Friends set, along with a Technic Monster truck, because why not?

This remix brings together two unlikely sets – 41688 Magical Caravan and 42119 Monster Jam Max-D

Sets used in this mashup:

41688 Magical Caravan – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

42119 Monster Jam Max-D – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

Organic Friendship Bus (41395 Friendship Bus and 41444 Heartlake City Organic Cafe)

Last but not least is LEGO’s take on meals on wheels, or in this case, an entire organic cafe on top of a bus, using 41395 Friendship Bus and 41444 Heartlake City Organic Cafe.

If it’s one thing you can’t fault Heartlake City engineers, it’s their ingenuity and capability to produce the most whimsical, yet strangely functional creations.

Sets used in this mashup:

41395 Friendship Bus – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

41444 Heartlake City Organic Cafe – buy from LEGO.com, Amazon.com or Amazon Australia

What do you think of these creations? Do you enjoy mashing up LEGO sets on your own?

There are no instructions for the Jungle Mech, or any other mash-up, as it’s simply the result of an amazing Lego builder demonstrating their skill and passion. It’s an art form, pure and simple, and instruction followers like ourselves are in awe of them.

Love this idea. I’ve just completed my own mash up of barracuda bay and the creator expert roller coaster. Might have to try the treehouse and bonsai now.

Love this idea – have lofty ideas of MOC but not so focused. Mashing up existing sets would be a great way to stretch my lego building/creativity muscles. Thanks for this post!

You’re welcome! They’re really cool, and I almost want to buy a second bonsai, just for the extra pink frogs for the treehouse!

I’m always in awe of people who are “freemakers”. I’m a strictly set-from-instruction builder, as it’s the step-by-step process that I find relaxing, and a collection of models from the front of the box that I desire. However, I still find the skill involved in creating art out of your imagination admirable.

Same here – I can’t MOC to save my life, but I always love seeing people go nuts with these builds.

Some of the Japanese builders are really good, and I enjoy seeing their work pop up on social media every now and then.
