LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog will be a LEGO Ideas set!

Sega fans rejoice! Everyone’s favourite speedy blue Hedgehog is making a triumphant return to LEGO after being approved as a LEGO Ideas set!

After being told that the project was still subject to a decision back in September 2020, LEGO have now greenlit the Sonic Mania Green Hill Zone set!

Designed by 24-year old Sonic fan Viv Grannell, the project captured SEGA’s critically acclaimed 2017 platformer experience Sonic Mania™, and features iconic characters and environments from the traditional Sonic first level – Green Hill Zone.

Any retro video game fan will be pleased to see Sonic make a return to LEGO, after a brief cameo in 2016’s LEGO Dimensions where the Sonic minifigure was included in a Level Pack.

There isn’t any more details on a release date, pricing or how close it’ll look to the Ideas project, but given that we know it takes close to 12 months for an Ideas project to go from approval to production, my guess is that the release will be timed to be close to the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, which is scheduled to speed into theatres on 8 April, 2022 – global pandemic situation notwithstanding.

In other news, Vincent Van Gogh was also approved as an upoming LEGO Ideas set! I’m obviously disappointed that Animal Crossing didn’t make the cut, but really pleased that we get a non pop-culture licensed set. Art & history geeks are going to love this, and I really hope the aesthetic and colours carry over to the final set

Let me know if you’re excited by this decision, and if you’re looking forward to Sonic’s return to LEGO or the Van Gogh set!

Hi Jay, thanks for the info, top work as usual.
I’ll be giving the Sonic a miss, it’s not of interest to me at all, but the Starry Night Van Gogh looks awesome. It could be the start of something great- famous paintings in Lego form. It’s got massive potential I think.

It’s a shame that so few of the sets in this review period came through, but both of these are a buy for me, so I guess Lego knows what fans want.

It was the largest review round, so yeah. I’m so bummed about Animal Crossing not making it, although I just keep telling myself that LEGO already has a set/theme in the works…

So excited about Van Gogh! A really interesting build by a really clever designer. Shame I’m officially broke! 😆

Oh yes, I’ll buy it. I spent many hours palying Sonic the Hedgehog & when in Vancouver we came across filming for the movie & had to see it when it came to our local Cinema.
