All the new 2021 LEGO sets featured in the 1HY Catalogue

December 7, 2020 By Jay Ong 55 Comments

Can you believe that 2021 is almost upon us? While most of us will be relieved to say goodbye to 2020, what better way to start looking at the year ahead than with all the new LEGO sets coming in the first half of 2021!

LEGO have shared their digital product catalogue for 2021 for NZ, and we now have a complete-ish look at all the new retail sets coming in 2021!

Note that sets featured in these pages are typically general release sets that can be found at most toy stores, and does not include any exclusive, D2C, 18+ releases and any other surprises LEGO might have for us.

On the 1st of January, 10281 Bonsai Tree, 10280 Flower Bouquet the Modular Police Station will go on sale!

To check out some of the exclusive releases, be sure to read my reviews of 10278 Modular Police Station or 80107 Spring Lantern Festival!

Note these dates are based on the NZ calendar, so they might vary in other parts of the world, but Australia tends to be in the same release schedule.

Also, these dates are dates that sets will appear at retail stores (like Kmart/Myer) in Australia and New Zealand, however, a large majority of these sets will be available from 1 January 2021 onwards from LEGO.com, Amazon and LEGO Certified Stores.

New LEGO City 2021 – January

We get a whole slew of new LEGO City sets, with the new Road Plates being the highlight of LEGO City sets. Friend of the blog Rambling Brick has written a great write-up on the evolution of road base plates, and what this might mean for LEGO City builders.

I’m really excited for the new 60287 Tractor as I love seeing more Farm-type models, but the set I’m most excited about is 60291 Family House which includes a new LEGO Labrador! Cue screams of excitement for golden Lab owners!

New LEGO Creator 2021 – February & March

There are some really cool-looking Creator 2021 sets such as 31116 Safari Wildlife Tree House with the brilliant brickbuilt Giraffe, but the 31115 Space Mining Mech is what I’m most excited about as I’m a sucker for all types of mechs.

New LEGO Harry Potter 2021 – January

LEGO Harry Potter fans are going to love these new Harry Potter Moments books, which open up to feature a buildable scene.

With books for each house – Hufflepuff (Herbology), Ravenclaw (Charms), Slytherin (Potions) and Gryffindor (Transfiguration), no matter which house you got sorted into, there’ll be something for everyone.

Can’t wait to get a few of these books to review in January 2021!

New LEGO Star Wars 2021 – January

We get a bunch of new Star Wars sets in January 2021 (with hopefully more Mandalorian sets being unveiled soon!) – like everyone else, I cannot wait to pick up the new 75299 Trouble on Tatooine set, which features Din Djarin in his Beskar armour.

New LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2021 – January

Lots of love for Spider-Man fans in early 2021! I’m especially excited for the 76175 Attack on the Spider-Lair base with its massive collection of Spider-suits!

Peter Parker has definitely been taking interior design classes from Tony Parker and Bruce Wayne!

The Miles Morales Mech with hooded Miles Morales Spider-Man minifig is also a decent pickup.

New LEGO Friends 2021 – January & March

Heartlake City fans have a lot to look forward to, with some new buildings and settings for LEGO Friends – a new Shopping Mall, Movie Theatre, Organic Cafe, Andrea’s Family House, Heartlake City Park, Vet Clinic, Bakery and Doggy Day Care .

I’m really excited about 41448 Heartlake City Movie Theatre and can’t wait to add that to my, ahem, my daughter’s collection.

Lots of new Animal Cubes as well!

New LEGO Dots 2021 – January & March

Creative types are going to be excited a we have more new dots coming along – I’m especially excited about the new Series 4 pack to see what new printed tiles we get!

New LEGO Disney Princess 2021 – February

My daughter is naturally a fan of all things LEGO Disney Princess, and we’re getting a respectable bunch of new sets, including a new Cinderella Carriage set with her Fairy Godmother, and a new Little Mermaid set, in addition to some new Frozen sets, including a new storybook!

We also get 2 new waves of Minecraft sets, split up in January and March. I don’t know much about LEGO Minecraft but that massive pig waterfall thing looks really cool.

I’ve written at length about the new LEGO Super Mario Wave 2 Expansion sets and these will arrive in January 2021!

The new LEGO Technic releases are split between February and March (to help you save money of course), with the newly revealed Ferrari 488 being one of the highlights in the first wave of 2021 Technic!

New Duplo 2021 – January & March

There sure is a lot of new LEGO Duplo coming out in January and March which will be great for new parents, or if you’re shopping for gifts. I think the sets with the flash cards are going to make great gifts to ensure young ones get hooked on LEGO plastic as early as possible.

New LEGO Minions & Vidiyo Teaser 2021

Last but not least, we have teasers for more Minions sets (to coincide with the delayed release of Rise of Gru) as well as the new Vidiyo teaser.

And that wraps up a preview of what’s coming to LEGO shelves in the first half of 2021!

Let me know in the comments what you’re most looking forward to!

I have a question: why has the quality of lego sets progressively gotten more simplistic? I remember as a kid these grand lego themes. But when they make newer ones, I’m just kinda disappointed. No offense.

You’re seeing it through the lens of an adult now vs. the lens of a child from back then, so no doubt it will appear that way. Lego sets these days have improved a lot compared to the hay day 80s and 90s with way more sophisticated building techniques. The only thing different is their stinginess with minifigures now days with less minifigures in a set vs a similar type set from the 80s

I spotted that they have put the new Lego Friends sets up on the U.K. site at least with the prices. The movie theatre seems overpriced for what it is. £45 in the U.K.

There’s no piece count yet, but it doesn’t look much bigger than the baking competition, which is £10 cheaper.

Having said that, we will probably go for a more expensive set: Andrea’s house looks great, with the musical instruments in the garage and is this the first time we’ve seen Andrea’s little sister Liz in a set?

For me the pick of the new sets is the Technic Ferrari. I assume it’s the same scale as the Porsche RSR, they should look good together.

Not the grinch at all! It’s been a massive problem for LEGO as well – they would LOVE to meet the demand, but because of Covid, even they couldn’t meet their most optimistic forecasts as demand has just been unprecedented.

Hopefully as things go back to normal next year, we’ll see things return back to normal.

Interesting that they’ve left the AFOL sets (such as creator expert and botanical collection ) out of this catalogue – I wonder if they’ll create an “Adult” catalogue!

The items I’m most excited about are the new road plates and the Harry Potter buildable books.

My 3D catalogue app doesn’t work… does anyone else have this problem (maybe it doesn’t become active until 2021)?

    • Jay says

      December 11, 2020 at 9:49 AM

Yes – that’s usually the case as 18+ sets are usually kept under wraps, and news of them gets released by LEGO blogs/news sites.

An adult catalogue is an interesting idea, but these LEGO catalogues tend to be aimed at kids – my daughter is obsessed with them, and often plans ahead what to ask for birthdays/Christmas etc.

I’m really looking forward to the Harry Potter books too!

Here's my review of 41757 Botanical Garden, hands Here's my review of 41757 Botanical Garden, hands down one of THE best sets of 2023 and a gleaming beacon of just how far the LEGO Friends theme has matured.

When you see the LEGO Friends Botanical Garden, it quickly becomes apparent that LEGO have something special on their hands with a design that's simply beautiful.

Hit the link in bio to read my full review!

It's truly a mark of a mature theme, that LEGO could debut a tasteful design like this into LEGO Friends, but crafted in such a way that it will also have broad appeal to City builders, or even fans who want a stunning architectural masterpiece to display their minifigures or minidolls in.

With so many amazing designs and sets being produced by Billund, 41757 Botanical Garden deservedly takes it's place as one of the best LEGO sets of 2023 and I can heartily recommend this set to everyone, and I have a gut feeling that this will be one of the best-selling LEGO Friends set of the year.

This is LEGO 40364 Icons of Play, a set celebratin This is LEGO 40364 Icons of Play, a set celebrating some of the most accomplished female football players.

It features minifigures of @samanthakerr20, @mrapinoe, @yuki_nagasato and @asisat_oshoala, and is set to be released on 6 June 2023!

I read some extremely disgusting misogynistic comments on this set, from the usual terminally-online, incel-esque dudebros who probably need to get out a little.

Women's football is on the up and up, with exponential growth in game attendance, and TV viewership, and this is really smart timing on LEGO's part, releasing this just before the FIFA Women's World Cup starts.

Women's football has massive grassroots support, and is a hugely popular sport for young girls, the very builders of tomorrow that LEGO is continually trying to inspire.

LEGO is even a sponsor of the Australian national women's team @thematildas!

It's not even a bad set, and will integrate nicely into LEGO City, with clear references to the popular Football theme from the early 2000s.

Still, it's very disappointing (but not surprising) to see large LEGO pages continue to encourage and not take a stronger stance against sexism and misogyny.

Do better with your influence and reach.
