The LEGO 21310 Old Fishing Store combines rustic charm with charming design

Yesterday, the team at LEGO Ideas unveiled one of the most hyped up LEGO Ideas set that isn’t the Saturn V – 21310 Old Fishing Store and it is simply stunning! The set was unveiled online and at Billund as part of the LEGO Fan Media Days (you can follow it on Instagram using the hashtag #LEGOFanMediaDays) and from what I’ve heard from those that have seen it in person – it’s absolutely gorgeous in the flesh.

The Old Fishing Store is based off the winning design of Robert Bontenbal (RobenAnne) and comprises of 2,049 LEGO bricks, which will make this the biggest Ideas set ever on its release, beating the Apollo Saturn V.

The release date for the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store is 1 September 2017, and it will retail for USD 149.99 / AU$249.99 / EURO 149.99 / GBP 139.99. Good news for Australia as we’ll be getting the set in-stores at the same time as everyone else!

Unlike the Saturn V which was released early at the Legoland Discovery Centre Melbourne Shop and Dreamworld LEGO Store, there will be a wider release this time with independents (like Toyworld and I’m Rick James Bricks) getting in on the action too. And yes, that is the official Australian RRP.

Here’s the official description of the set:

Find all the gear you need for a fantastic fishing trip at the Old Fishing Store! Walk up the steps from the beach into the shop selling fishing rods, hooks, harpoons, diving equipment, oxygen tanks and much more. Climb the ladder to the top of the watchtower and look through the telescope to enjoy the view. Then relax and read the newspaper in the office. Just make sure the cat or seagulls don’t eat the freshly caught fish hanging outside!

The Old Fishing Store is ideal for display and role-play, this model has 2 removable roofs, an opening back wall in the shop for easy access, 4 minifigures, cat and 3 seagull figures, as well as loads of other cool details and elements to fire up the imagination.

The designers have done a wonderful job making the gorgeous submission look even better. The elaborate detailing on the roof is a big upgrade over the original and I’m glad that they’ve made it a lot busier with so many more little details.

The set comes with 4 minifigures, which look to have some really interesting new designs. I’m especially a fan of the Fisherman with his olive green overalls and boots, as well as the Captain’s sweater! The addition on the seagulls (you get 3!), lobster, cat and crab are also really nice additions.

I can’t help but say that this is one of my most anticipated sets this year. It’s a big risk for LEGO to produce such a large and sophisticated Ideas set which is based off an original design instead of an existing license, but I believe that the set’s charming design and great price point will ensure that it’ll fly off the shelves.

If you want to check out more photos, check out The Rambling Brick’s post or Brickset’s photos on Instagram to see even more details, especially the gorgeous interiors!

I’d love to know what you think of the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store in the comments. Must-buy or is the set’s price tag going to be a tough purchase to justify.

Can I pre order the old fishing store?

  2. Deb says:

Does anyone know the dimensions of this lego. I read it somewhere but cant find it now.

    Thanks

  3. Magmafrost says:

Kind of a shame its not compatible with the modular buildings straight out of the box, but I guess the whole point of lego is that you can change things. They made some weird changes to the design, but the only one that really hurts is replacing the fish on top of the tower with a chicken. Why would a fishing hut use a chicken instead of a fish?

    • Jay says:

I guess it’s cause it’s technically not a modular building – it’s just designed in the same scale/size.

The chicken is probably there to make it look like a traditional weather vane. Maybe the fish piece isn’t in production or is in low supply. Shouldn’t be too hard a substitute to make.

  4. Mike says:

Hi Jay, do these large Ideas sets ever find their way to retail stores such as Myer or David Jones, or are they usually exclusive to the Lego store? Thanks!

  5. Warmongurl says:

This is definitely going on my purchase list! It’ll make a gorgeous display piece with so many details that you don’t get them all in the first glance. I like the color scheme too. The price point seems quite decent for the piece count, unique minifigs, and creature assortment. I’m excited for three seagulls! Looks like a fun build too 🙂

    • Jay says:

So much sand green too! It’s definitely one of the standout sets this year, and LEGO still hasn’t clued us in on what else they have up their sleeves!

  6. BrickNick says:

The minifigs sold me on this! When I saw the successful submission my first thought was “too busy”. But with the changes by LEGO and the brilliant job done on the minifigs, this thing just oozes character.

    Definite addittion to my collection

    • Jay says:

Definitely – the new designs are ace. They really elevate this from a great design to awesome one. Hope to discover more secrets and surprises as we get more details and pics!

  7. Bruno says:

It would be nice if their was a modular building / detailed model that was affordable for casual collectors.

    • Karrakazul says:

While not exactly modular some of the 3-in-1 Creator line buildings could probably fill that niche?

    • Jay says:

I think the Palace Cinema is priced pretty fairly, especially if you can nab it as a discount. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for as more pieces = more details they can cram in to the designs.

  8. Karrakazul says:

Looks amazing, the original designers did a fantastic job and the LEGO guys really polished it up with some great extra detail. Compared to what else is on offer at that price at the moment I think it is good value, if not in amount of bricks, then in design and appearance and I will for sure be grabbing one. Only question is where to put it, wondering if it will look too out of place with the modular line-up or if it might fit in with the City lifesaving stuff coming out.

    • Jay says:

Yup – it’s got a really unique charm to it. It really looks like it was inspired out of a building from the real world and doesn’t really give off a “toy” vibe that you get from the Modular Buildings. Really mature and complex design where the little details make all the difference.

I guess you could always expand your Modular Street to the beachside!

    • Deb says:

If you look on Lego ideas, there may be a mini series of similar ones coming out to put with it

  9. Mark says:

Gorgeous looking set! I agree with you on what the designers have done to make it look more ramshackle. It’s a massive improvement over the original submission without changing the overall design. The box art is beautiful too. Between this and Saturn V I think Lego Ideas has just hit its strides.

  10. Daniel says:

The difference between the original design and official set really shows how much the Lego designers can polish up an already good design into a spectacular set that oozes buckets of character. It must be a fantastic experience to see your home MOC go through the official process and collaborate with the professional designers, and in turn they must enjoy breaking out of their bubble and working with gifted amateurs on such unique projects. It’s great to see them release a set not based on an Intellectual Property in the Ideas line too. It’s exciting to see where the Ideas line appears to be heading, both with subject matter and the scale of sets such as the Saturn V and Old Fishing Store. I will be saving to buy both.

    • Jay says:

You nailed it on the head. It’s a really minor improvement, but the minifigs really take it to a whole new level in terms of the overall design and gives it so much character and charm. Given that this will be the largest LEGO Ideas set yet, I’m really happy that they went all out with this to improve an already fantastic base design.

Even though they’ve made recent changes on the project submission guidelines, I really hope that the Ideas team continues to take big risks like this. If this one sells well, I don’t see why they shouldn’t greenlight a lot of more ambitious project. My dream scenario would be for the Ideas team to revisit or hold another community vote for previous sets that didn’t/couldn’t make a cut – sorta like a second chance thing.

      • Daniel says:

I’d love to see the Modular Construction Site or Modular Train Station from the last couple of reviews get revisited, they were the best realisation of what they were trying to achieve that I have seen anywhere. Their piece count was just too overblown at 4K+.

        • Jay says:

Yeah, those were a little too ambitious with their massive piece counts. That said, no one expected the Fishing Store to make it either!

  11. Marsha says:

I really like this model. It looks great and it is a reasonable price for the number of bricks you get. I would buy this rather than the $229 jungle set, which I think is a ripoff!

    • Jay says:

Oh yeah, when you place this set next to the Jungle Air Drop Helicopter set, it’s a no-brainer which one you should get.

  12. Alison says:

I wasn’t going to get this as I didn’t really think it would go in my city, but seeing the final version, with so many beautiful details and such atmosphere and character, I have fallen well and truly in love with it. So… yeah I will get it from a store here though I am hoping I can wait long enough for there to be a 20% discount. It happened with Dr Who and Wall*E so it will hopefully happen with this… and then after building it properly I might try shrinking it down and adding it to my winter village…

    • Jay says:

There’ll be a pretty wide release in September, so there’ll be a very good chance that we’ll be able to snag it for 20% off.

Should be pretty easy to fit this into the winter village, just swap out the roof tiles for white ones!

  13. Scoobysoo says:

This is so amazing, I have been supporting all of RobenAnne’s builds and I hope lego produce them all!

  14. folken says:

That set is awesome. I don’t buy modulars but can’t miss on that one.

Just one suggestion with your site. When clicking on images/photos it would be better to trigger a new page with the images or overlay instead. better user experience IMO.

  15. Sgoteam says:

I’m not really into fishing, perhaps due to me living in Hong Kong, where the waters are really polluted, but I find this set really interesting. As I don’t go fishing, I have no idea what is a fishing store, so this set will give me a new idea on fishing. I will pick this up, but I’m not in a hurry to. Maybe after my exams, and I’ll pick this one up with Saturn V.

    • Jay says:

Hopefully the booklet will include some context and maybe inspiration to help you learn more about the fishing store. I’ve only gone fishing a handful of times in my life, and I don’t think I’ve ever been to a store like this, but I can imagine that it’s quite close to what a real one is like 🙂

  16. Hammerdragon says:

Looks simply stunning and is the must have set of 2017 for me. Been waiting impatiently since it was announced for this to be released and now I have a firm date to work to.

    • Jay says:

Same here! I’m even more impressed with this set than the Saturn. It’s a big risk for LEGO to produce such a large Ideas set, and I really hope their faith in the adult community is rewarded commensurately.

      • Hammerdragon says:

Yeah that’s a good point Jay. When you see the success so far of the Saturn V set selling out and already on back order on LEGO.com then I’m sure their faith will be rewarded and will probably broaden their scope when releasing future sets.

        • Jay says:

Who knew that designing great sets that people actually want and pricing them fairly is a recipe for commercial success!?
