The Top 10 biggest LEGO sets list welcomes 10316 Lord of the Rings: Rivendell

The internet and the LEGO fan community has been stirred up into a euphoric frenzy with the reveal of 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, a massive LEGO Lord of the Rings set coming in March 2023.

The official reveal and my exclusive first impressions of the set are already one of the most-read articles on the site in 2023 (in only 2 days!), to give you a sense of scale of just how much hype there is surrounding Rivendll – and for good measure!

At 6,167 pieces, it instantly becomes one of the biggest LEGO set of all time (by piece-count) and takes up a spot in the Top 10 Biggest LEGO sets, booting off the 10299 Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu Stadium list. Kinda (there are 2 almost-identical Taj Mahals, and it’s complicated).

When 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is released on 5 March (for LEGO VIPs), it will take its place in the Top 10, all of which (except the Taj Mahal) are currently available to purchase! In fact, 7 out of the Top 10 were released in the last 3 years!

Without further ado, here’s a look at the Top 10 biggest LEGO sets by piece count, updated as of February 2023. Will there be any new additions this year?

With Double VIP Points kicking off tomorrow, it’s not a bad time to pick any of these gargantuan sets up!

1) 31203 World Map – 11,695 pieces (2021)

Released in 2021, the World Map, from LEGO’s Art theme is technically at the number one spot, boasting 11,695 pieces, most of which are tiny 1×1 studs and tiles.

It still makes for a one-of-a-kind display piece, and bring a touch of worldly class into any room you hang it in.

2) 10307 Eiffel Tower – 10,001 pieces (2022)

The 2023 LEGO Eiffel Tower stands tall amongst its contemporaries, measuring 149 cm (4.8 ft) tall, and is only the second LEGO set ever with a 5-digit piece count (10,001 pieces).

Released in 2022, it’s a hugely impressive, detailed and mind-boggling piece of LEGO engineering, and one of the most impressive LEGO sets you can have on display.

See how tall the LEGO Eiffel Tower is in this photo series where I compare it to all sorts of LEGO sets, objects and even a one-year old baby.

3) 10294 Titanic – 9,090 pieces (2021)

At 9,090-pieces, the 1.35 metre long LEGO Titanic, released in 2021 takes third place. The intricately detailed re-creation of on of the biggest and most famous cruise liners ever is a massive centerpiece, and one of the most well-loved LEGO sets.

It’s so popular that it often goes out of stock, and is just the tip of the iceberg of what incredible feats can be achieved by clicking over 9,000 pieces of LEGO together.

4) 10276 Colosseum – 9,036 pieces (2020)

Next in the ring is the 10276 Colosseum, which briefly held the title of biggest LEGO set ever with a respectable 9,036-pieces before it got knocked off the top by the World Map just 7 months later.

One of the world’s most enduring landmarks, the Colosseum is still a force to be reckoned and if you can put up with the near-endless series of repetitive tan wedges, makes for a colossal LEGO display model.

5) 75192 UCS Millennium Falcon – 7,541 pieces (2017)

When you typically picture biggest LEGO sets ever, the one set that usually comes to mind is the 7,541-piece UCS Millennium Falcon, an updated version of the original which was notable for being one of the most valuable and most-sought after LEGO sets ever.

Despite being in service for over 6 years now, the UCS Millennium Falcon is still considered THE crown jewel and grail for any LEGO Star Wars fan.

6) 75313 UCS AT-AT – 6,785 pieces (2021)

While the UCS Millennium Falcon might be the holy grail for LEGO Star Wars fans, it doesn’t quite stand up to the UCS AT-AT, which towers over it at the number 6 spot with 6,785 pieces.

It’s one of my favourite LEGO Star Wars sets of all time, and occupies a prominent display position in my home, and while it’s coming up to the 2 year mark, I’m still in awe everytime I sneak a glance at this hulking grey walker.

7) 75331 UCS Razor Crest – 6,187 pieces (2022)

The third and final LEGO Star Wars UCS set on the list is 75331 UCS Razor Crest, the most recent Star Wars addition having being released in late 2022, and taking the lucky number 7 spot with 6,187 pieces.

It’s hugely impressive, and if you’ve managed to see one assembled in LEGO Stores, can really appreciate the sheer size and scale of The Mandalorian’s iconic (and short-lived) spaceship.

8) 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell – 6,167 pieces (2023)

It’s so surreal that LEGO Lord of the Rings is back in 2023, and even more impressive that the newly revealed 10316 Rivendell debuts on the 8th spot in the 10 Biggest LEGO sets of all time.

While only official photos are available at the moment, I hope you’ll be able to get to see this set in person, as the size and scale will blow you away, and explain why it’s 6,167-pieces

9) 71043 Hogwarts Castle – 6,020 pieces (2018)

In the 9th spot, and perilously close to being booted out the top 10 is 71043 Hogwarts Castle, which is still quite respectable as the 6,020 piece set celebrates its 5th anniversary this year.

In 2018 when it released, it was spell-binding just how large and ambitious, this micro-scale Hogwarts Castle was, and to this day, is still considered one of the most impressive LEGO Harry Potter sets yet.

10) 10256 Taj Mahal – 5,923 pieces (2017)

And last but not least, to round up the Top 10 Biggest LEGO sets ever is the only retired set on the list (and former number 1!) – 10256 Taj Mahal, a 2017 remake of the 2008 original.

The 2008 version, 10189 Taj Mahal is actually number 11 on the list of biggest LEGO sets ever, but has one less piece than the 5,923-piece remake.

These large-scale Architecture sets are always a staple on Biggest LEGO Set ever, and it seems inevitable that the Taj Mahal will get knocked out, maybe in a few months but at the same time, it’s never a bad time to appreciate what LEGO achieved with this, especially as it’s essentially based on a 2008 model.

And that’s it for the most up-to-date Top 10 Biggest LEGO sets ever by piece count! 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is a more than welcome addition to the Top 10, and I can’t wait to see what LEGO has in store for us this year, and if the World Map will ever be knocked off its perch.

With LEGO’s ambitions and engineering techniques improving year on year, I think it’s only a matter of time!
