Review: LEGO 31140 Magical Unicorn

March 6, 2023 By Jay Ong 4 Comments

March 2023 saw the debut of a pretty big lineup of new Creator 3-in-1 sets, a theme that I have always enjoyed because it always feels like the purest and most creative LEGO experience.

Add in the ability to build and rebuild 3 different models in a set, and you have everything you need for a fun LEGO kit that provides plenty of fun.

One of the Creator sets I’ve been looking forward to picking up was 31140 Magical Unicorn, which drew me in with its vibrant colours, cute builds and most importantly, a really affordable US$10 pricetag.

Here’s a quick review of the rainbow-powered Creator Magical Unicorn set, which is Creator 3-in-1 at its very best!

31140 Magical Unicorn is available from LEGO.com, or Amazon and in Australia, you can pick it up for AU$10 from Kmart.

At AU$10, I wasted no time in picking up 3 copies of the set for this review, mostly because I wanted to build all 3 models and display them simultaneously, but also because I got lazy and wanted to avoid breaking apart the sets for each model.

There are 3 models that you can build from 31140 Magical Unicorn – a peacock, a magical unicorn and a seahorse, all of whom feature bright and vibrant rainbow colours.

At US$10, these are really great impulse buys and you are still guaranteed a great LEGO building experience, all without the need to break the bank, which is why I really appreciate LEGO Creator 3-in-1.

Peacock Model

First off, let’s take a look at the Peacock, which was a design contributed by LEGO VP of Design Matthew Ashton, which he has adoringly named Ploomella or Ploomelope.

I wasn’t expecting to like the Peacock build, but it’s such an adorable model, and there are some really great distinctive features such a his yellow beak, and teal/blue crest on his head.

With his big eyes, and dashing crest, he just looks really sassy, and he knows that he’s the best-looking peacock and isn’t afraid to strut his stuff.

A really nice bit of detail is the Peacock’s Tail, which utilises some really clever and gorgeous tile-work, alongside some slope elements for some added texture.

All in all, a really cute and sassy Peacock!

Seahorse Model

Up next we have the Seahorse, which is a form that you wouldn’t expect to be done easily, yet designer Irma Svenningsson managed to nail the Seahorse’s distinctive silhouette.

The arched head, large rainbow-coloured belly, and twisty tail all come together quite nicely, and there’s even a golden horn to top the seahorse off, giving it a bit of a whimsical and magical vibe.

Here’ a look at the Seahorse from the side for you to really appreciate just how accurately the shape was re-created here, which is helped by the base to balance it all.

There’s some limited articulation on the head and tail, and because of its height and it does look good on display, but the colours are a little loud here, and not quite what you’d expect from a seahorse.

Thankfully, it’s a magical Seahorse, so it mostly still works.

Magical Unicorn Model

And last but not least is the primary model, the Magical Unicorn. This was pure joy to build, and is so whimsical and magical that you can’t help but smile as you put it together.

The colours are simply magical, and this probably comes close to 31124 Super Robot as one the most enjoyable Creator 3-in-1 sets I’ve ever put together.

The blend of colours and wavy shape of the Unicorn’s mane and tail are superb, and I also like the hints of mint across the body that break up the mostly white background.

Here’s a look at the rainbow-patterned base which ties the entire build together.

One of the Magical Unicorn’s main drawcards is the level of articulation and how dynamic it is as a LEGO model.

Upward Facing Dog
Kickie Uppie
Flamboyant Kickie Uppie
Dolphin Pose

It’s so poseable that it can easily perform all sorts of yoga poses and moves. I’ve taken the liberty to go by the naming convention that EllieVToys put together for the Unicorn’s yoga poses.

And yes, it also trots along effortlessly!

What I liked:

  • Great selection of models to build that all have their own unique looks
  • Ultra-affordable
  • Plenty of colours to use for further creative building
  • Magical Unicorn’s articulation makes it so much fun to pose and display

What I didn’t like:

  • Some alternate eyes would’ve been a nice bonus

Final Thoughts:

I had an absolute blast with 31140 Magical Unicorn, and I consider this a shining example of all that’s great with Creator 3-in-1.

For starters, the US$10 pricetag just screams affordable, and there aren’t any compromises with the LEGO building experience – rather the opposite as you get 3 models to build and rebuild, making this a great toy especially for younger builders.

Each different model has their own quirks and they all look pretty good, although I have to say that I’m partial to the Peacock because of his sass levels.

The Magical Unicorn is a superb model, with mesmerising colours, and plenty of articulation that simply invites you to play and put it in all sorts of funny poses.

31140 Magical Unicorn is easily LEGO Creator 3-in-1 at its very best, and I couldn’t have enjoyed this any more. Highly recommend this if you’re looking for an inexpensive whimsical LEGO set that packs plenty of fun.

Build [4] – Really fun varied builds for all 3 models
Real Value [5] – At US$10/AU$10, this is unbeatable value at this price bracket
Innovation [4] – Creating animal forms at this price level and piece count that look accurate is awefully impressive
Coolness [4] – Some people might be put off by all the rainbow colours, but I love how whimsical it looks, and the posability of the Unicorn
Keepability [4] – This is great set to play with, or even display a you’re invited to change up the Unicorn’s poses

Rating and score: 4/5 ★★★★✰

Ploomela(Pamela) & Ploomelope(Penelope)? No one told Matthew Ashton that the pretty peacocks are the boys. 🤭

With the large sets now being basically out of reach, these fun smaller sets are my Lego go to these days. Not sure how this affects Lego longer term but I hope they continue to put as much effort into the “pocket money” sets as they do into the flagships. This one is a beauty, and at $A10 (Kmart) it’s easy to justify multiple sets and building all three models.

This is very good value. The unicorn is far more posable than I though it would be, the peacock is my favourite design of the three though.

I totally agree, I loved the unicorn and once I built it I immediately ordered another on amazon so I could do the peacock. You can’t go wrong for the price, it’s a fun build with a lot of detail for $10. I have some big complicated sets but sometimes it’s fun to just do a simple little build.

In corporate-speak, this means that they're looking to cancel the sets in order to free up resources across the organisation, a sign that not all is going to plan in Billund.

As this isn't going to be the easiest exercise, LEGO are going to use the LEGO Ideas platform to help decide which sets to cancel, beginning with the upcoming Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary sets which were planned for June 2023.

Here's my review of 77015 Temple of the Golden Ido Here's my review of 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol, ahead of the triumphant return of LEGO Indiana Jones in April 2023!

77015 Temple of the Golden Idol is a marvel of LEGO design, and a huge leap forward for adult-focused sets that make play features an integral part of the set experience.

For fans of LEGO Indiana Jones, this is an excellent demonstration of what’s possible when given the adults/LEGO Icons treatment, bringing to life one of the most iconic scenes and character introductions in history.

What’s truly remarkable about this set is how it integrates both being an attractive display piece with play functions that augment the entire experience. As a diorama, all the key scenes from the opening scene of Raiders are captured, allowing you to place the minifigures in different spots to re-enact your favourite moments from the Temple of the Golden Idol.

The set has 124 pieces and comes with 3 minifigures - Master Yoda, Lys Solay and Kai Brightstar. Young Jedi Adventures is set during the High Republic era, so it's neat to get a young Yoda and new alien species.

It's priced at US$39.99 / AU$64.99 / €42.99 / £37.99 / CAD$49.99 which is a little crazy for a set aimed at really young kids.
