Review: LEGO Marvel Mighty Micros (76064, 76065, 76066)

One of the most exciting (and surprising) new releases this year under the Super Heroes theme is Mighty Micros. These sets came outta nowhere and caught a lot of LEGO Super Heroes fans off guard with their fun, kiddy, bumper car-esque vehicles called Mighty Micros complete with miniaturised wacky versions of popular Super Hero minifigs.

Think Star Wars Microfighters for Super Heroes, but infused with more humour. These relatively affordable sets sit very comfortably in impulse-purchase territory and have definitely piqued my interest.

The first wave or series of Mighty Micros are split evenly between Marvel and DC with 3 sets apiece. I’ve opted to review the Marvel Mighty Micro sets first and will be bundling all 3 sets into one review.

Read on for reviews of 76064 Mighty Micros: Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin, 76065 Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull, 76066 Mighty Micros: Hulk vs. Ultron. If you’d like to jump to a particular review, just click one of these links to get to that particular Mighty Micro section.

Review: LEGO 76064 Mighty Micros Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin

For the first Marvel Mighty Micros review, we take a look at 76064 Spider-Man vs Green Goblin. The friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man takes on one of his arch-enemies, the Green Goblin in this delightful number.

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Minifigures

Here’s a look at the Green Goblin and Spider-Man minifigures. All Mighty Micro minifigures exhibit the same comical look, complete with short stumpy legs to give them both a juvenile and Chibi-inspired look. Following the light-hearted tone of the sets, each minifigure also has equally comical and exaggerated expressions.

The Spider-Man minifigure comes with a new-ish torso, with a massive Spider-Man logo on his chest. My favourite thing about him is his quizzical one squinting eye look, which makes for an excellent application of Spider-Man’s emotive white eyes.

The facial expression also works well with his accessory – a camera to complement his alter ego’s job at the Daily Bugle.

The Green Goblin minifigure is a variant that’s loosely based on the Green Goblin included in 10687 Spider-Man Hideout who has a slightly more mischievous look on his face. The Green Goblin is decked out in his signature green and purple threads, and comes with a recoloured headpiece that was first seen in Series 13’s Goblin.

I really like his simple torso printing, which has an oversized Pumpkin Bomb buckle on it. Unlike other Super Heroes minifigures, these Mighty Micro minifigures feel a lot more comic book-y with the thick lines and details.

For his weapon, we get a fantastic looking printed Pumpkin Bomb which is the same size as a minifigure head. It’s a very useful accessory as it can be used as a minifigure head or jack-o-lantern.

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Minifigures Back Printing

Both minifigures have back printing which is very nice. I really love Spidey’s fat spider logo on the back. This feels like the fattest Spider-Man logo that I’ve ever seen and I love it. Spider-Man aslo has webbing printed on the back of his head which is nice, but I can’t wait till LEGO manage to upgrade their printing technology to be able to wrap around the entire minifigure head.

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Minifigures Comparison

In case you were wondering how the Green Goblin and Spider-Man minifigures compare to their regular-sized brethren. They almost look like little offspring of these Super Heroes!

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Helicopter

Here’s look at Spider-Man’s Mighty Micro vehicle, a blue and red helicopter. It’s a cute little build that looks more like a Gyrocopter than anything else. Nothing too flashy about Spidey’s ride except that it has 2 flick fire missiles. One minor drawback is that the vehicle isn’t particularly balanced well and tends to tip backwards when playing around with it.

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Glider

Green Goblin’s Mighty Micro vehicle is a lot cooler as it captures the look of his iconic Glider quite well. It has green flaps and the shape is almost perfect, with soft curves and even some trans orange cones behind to simulate the look of jet flames.

LEGO 76064 Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin - Seating

Because all Mighty Micro minifigures have short legs, they can’t sit and there’s a small space where you can slot them in tightly to pilot their vehicles.

Mighty Micro Spider-Man vs Green Goblin

Final thoughts: The Spider-Man vs Green Goblin Mighty Micros set is great. If you missed out on the previous Juniors set, this is such an easy and affordable way to get your hands on a Green Goblin minifigure. If you don’t mind his slightly cartoony appearance, you could easily give him longer legs so that he doesn’t look out of place alongside regular minifigs.

The vehicles are decent but unremarkable. Spider-Man’s gyrocopter is pretty boring but then again, most Spider-Man vehicles are pretty lame. Green Goblin’s glider vehicle is the standout, with a great design that perfectly mimics the Green Goblin Glider.

The minifigures are definitely the strongest elements of the Spider-Man vs Green Goblin Mighty Micros set, especially Spider-Man’s amazing facial expression.

Review: LEGO 76065 Mighty Micros Captain America vs Red Skull

LEGO Mighty Micros Captain America vs Red Skull

Here’s a look at the next set, LEGO 76065 Mighty Micros: Captain America vs Red Skull which eschews conventional vehicles and instead places Cap and his adversary Red Skull in very war-like vehicles. Unlike Spider-Man vs Green Goblin, Captain America vs Red Skull dials the comical factor all the way up to 11.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Minifigures

Here’s a look at the Red Skull and Captain America Mighty Micros Minifigures. Both these minifigures have the funniest facial expressions out of the first wave of Marvel Mighty Micros, which make for refreshing alternatives to the usual “good natured look” or “angry teeth-baring” expressions that you normally get on regular Super Hero minifigures.

The Red Skull minifigure has a hilarious exasperated expression, complete with the “twitchy-eye” look. I really love these emotive looks for Super Hero minifigs as they add a whole new level of personality to these characters. Red Skull is equipped with a transparent 1 x 1 brick – the Cosmic Cube that occupied most of the plot of the first Captain America movie.

Captain America has an equally comical look with a giant smirk and fully white eye holes on his mask. From the Marvel movies and sets, Cap is usually presented as a stoic, no nonsense leader so it’s a breath of fresh air to have a version where he’s grinning like he’s just pranked someone.

I’m a big fan of the simplified torso details of both Red Skull and Captain America. Captain America’s torso is especially well done, with a basic stars and stripes look and a black belt. Steve Rogers’ Vibranium shield is the same accessory as all other Captain America minifigures.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Minifigures Back Printing'

Here’s a look at the back printing of both minifigures. Red Skull takes the cake with a Hydra logo emblazoned on his back, except that the it looks more like a cute googly-eyed octopus than a menacing tentacled skull.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Minifigure Comparison

Here we have the Red Skull and Captain America Mighty Micros minifigures and a comparison with their regular-sized brethren.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Sticker Sheet

Interestingly, the Captain America vs Red Skull Mighty Micros set is the only Marvel set with stickers. Again, I so love the hilarious googly-eyed Hydra logo. I wish we had gotten more of these stickers so that I can replace all the other existing Hydra stickers.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Tank

Captain America has one of the most unique Mighty Micros vehicle – a tank! Featuring a barrel-looking body which comfortably fits Captain America, the tank makes fantastic use of dark blue elements and bricks, one of my personal favourite LEGO colours. There are some fascinating elements such as the dark blue bucket for the tank’s cannon.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Vehicle

Red Skull’s Mighty Micro vehicle is a smaller version of the off-road vehicle included in the now-retired 76017 Captain America vs Hydra set, complete with an identical olive green colour scheme. Olive green is a relatively uncommon colour, so I was beyond delighted to obtain more parts in this colour.

Red Skull’s ride is designed well and contains some interesting elements such as the two missiles attached to the back that use a pearl silver goblet as the missile’s body. It’s designed very well and is one of the more proportionate vehicles in the Marvel Mighty Micros lineup.

LEGO 76065 Captain America vs Red Skull - Hydra Sticker

Here’s a closer look at the stickered Hydra logo.

Mighty Micros Captain America vs Red Skull

Final thoughts: I really got a huge kick out of LEGO 76065 Mighty Micros Captain America vs Red Skull. Both vehicles are really well designed with incredibly unique and distinctive looks. Captain America’s tank takes the hilarity to the next level, and kinda makes you wonder about a previously unknown warmongering side of Steve Rogers. Then again, he is the poster child for the USA…

Red Skull’s vehicle also nails the off-road, slightly militaristic vehicle look as well and is buoyed by the lovely olive green colour scheme.

Both Mighty Micro minifgures are fantastic and manage to fully convey the light-heartedness of the entire Mighty Micros theme. My favourite has to be Red Skull who beats out Captain America purely because of the cute looking googly-eyed Octopus Hydra logo printed on his back.

The Captain America vs Red Skull Mighty Micros are my favourites out of the entire Marvel lineup.

Review: LEGO 76066 Mighty Micros Hulk vs Ultron

LEGO 76066 Mighty Micros Hulk vs. Ultron

Last but not least is 76066 Mighty Micros Hulk vs Ultron, which sees The Incredible Hulk take on sentient robot, Ultron in the most ridiculous set in this wave of Marvel Mighty Micros.

LEGO 76066 Hulk vs. Ultron - Minifigures

The minifigures are definitely the star of the Hulk vs Ultron. The Mighty Micros Hulk minifigure is the first minifigure-scale Hulk that’s been made available for purchase outside of promotional polybags, which will undoubtedly make this set one of the most popular Mighty Micros.

Sure, the Hulk minifigure is a little squat, and short, but there’s almost nothing stopping you from giving him regular purple legs to transform him into a regular-sized minifig. The Hulk minifig, like the rest of the minifigures in this subtheme looks incredibly juvenile and cute. He has an angry expression on his face, not unlike his predecessors but you kinda of expect that since he’s The Hulk and he’s always angry.

He’s got basic muscle definition that looks more cartoony than anything, and a lovely purple belt with an “H” buckle. Very stylish! For accessories, he comes with a chicken drumstick, I guess because he’s hungry or something.

Ultron, while not as popular as the Hulk is still pretty damn cool. He looks nothing like the versions that appeared in the Age of Ultron sets from last year, and instead features a very simple, almost primitive robotic look.

His torso has a few lines printed and a few sheets of iron that are fastened to his body via oversized screws. It doesn’t look very menacing but it is an incredibly attractive torso – you can definitely reuse it to create generic robots in your MOCs or custom minifigures.

He’s got a wrench, which he probably uses to fix himself up every time he gets pummeled by The Hulk.

LEGO 76066 Hulk vs. Ultron - Minifigures Back Printing

Here’s a look at the back printing of both minifigures. Ultron has some very subtle printing on the back of his head, which was a lovely surprise – I love the screw at the back of his head.

LEGO 76066 Hulk vs. Ultron - Minifigure Comparison

This is how the minifigures compare against their regular-sized predecessors. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the silvery Ultron from the Quinjet set as I haven’t got around building that set yet so I used the one from the Hulkbuster set as reference.

LEGO 76066 Hulk vs. Ultron - Ultron Vehicle

Ultron’s Mighty Micros vehicle is a silvery grey spider-looking vehicle, with menacing claws sticking out the side. It almost looks like a scorpion, with the solitary spiked claw emerging from the back of the vehicle. I’m not that big a fan of the vehicle as the colour scheme is pretty bland – it just looks like a mass of grey and pearly silver, so Ultron kinda blends into it all.

The design isn’t too bad and there’s a bit of playability built into it as you can tilt the claws up and down to give the vehicle a different look.

LEGO 76066 Hulk vs. Ultron - Hulk Green Machine

The Hulk’s Mighty Micros vehicle on the other hand is hands down the best in the series. Where do I begin? The fact that The Hulk is awkwardly sitting in a tiny car? Or the oversized green fists emerging from both sides?

The Hulk’s vehicle perfectly captures the whimsical and outrageous essence of the entire Mighty Micros subtheme. There are some interesting elements in purple, and it’s nice getting more green fists. Even the rims on the wheel are green, which look really cool.

Mighty Micros Hulk vs Ultron

Final thoughts: LEGO 76066 Mighty Micros Hulk vs Ultron is a bit of a mixed bag. Ultron, as both a minifigure and a vehicle is a little bland, especially if you compare it against nearly every other character in this subtheme. He makes up for it with a very versatile torso, and a pretty unique look but apart from that, I just couldn’t get excited over him.

The Hulk on the other hand, is absolutely flawless. A minifigure-sized Hulk in an AU$18 set is just a dream come true, especially for those who missed out on the promotional polybags. He’s also the correct shade of Green!

The Hulk’s Mighty Micro vehicle, aptly named the “super-cool green machine with big fists” is perfectly funny, with the two fists flanking the car. Add the Hulk minifigure in who is holding a chicken drumstick and you have a flawless Mighty Micros combination.

Rating: 4/5

LEGO Marvel Mighty Micros

Final final thoughts: At first, I wasn’t really sold on the Mighty Micros concept but after building them and getting the opportunity to appreciate them in the flesh, I’ve been converted to a fan. Firstly, I love how affordable they are, which is even more amazing since Super Heroes sets tend to occupy the higher price brackets of LEGO sets.

They’re awesome impulse purchase buys and look incredibly cute. They zip around on their wheels effortlessly and they look great when displayed all together.

At such an affordable price point, these represent amazing value for both parents who are buying them for kids or adult collectors eager to expand their Super Heroes collection. The unique and comical appearances of popular Marvel characters just add to the appeal of Mighty Micros.

LEGO is at its core about creativity, and I can definitely see fans building Mighty Micros vehicles for all sorts of LEGO minifigures or characters not accounted for in this first wave. Do I expect more Mighty Micros from LEGO? Absolutely as I think these will sell well as they also appeal to non-Super Heroes LEGO fans who are interested in experimenting with the theme.

I also really like these sets as an outlet for LEGO to shove in popular characters, as they’re stylized enough to distance themselves from regular Super Heroes minifigures thanks to the cartoony tone of the sets.

I can confidently say that this is one of more exciting product releases and innovations out of LEGO this year and I’m looking forward to LEGO expanding on this theme. A Mighty Micros racetrack would be perfect and I’d pay good money for that.

I’ll be checking out the DC Mighty Micros a bit later, so keep a lookout for it!

  1. Steve says:

I bought 2 sets each of the Batman v Cat Woman and Captain America vs Red Skull (one set converted to normal legs).

What’s interesting is the two Red Skulls and Cat Woman have different print finishes. I must have received a set each from a different batch because one of them has a matte finish, and the other a gloss/shiny finish on the torsos.

Is that common? I haven’t come across that before. The gloss one seems to gets marked up/scratched easily in the bag, whereas the matte ones were in mint condition.

Anyways, great review and you’re blog is one of the best!!

    • Jay says:

Hey Steve, that’s really interesting. I’ve never heard or personally seen such variations in new identical sets.

Do you mind taking a photo of it? You’ve really piqued my curiosity!

Thanks so much for the kind words!

  2. Matt Merrill says:

These are pretty cool but with them featuring so many Marvel characters I own already, I decided I’d pass on them when I saw them at Wal-Mart today. But then I saw the three DC Mighty Micros sets, and I couldn’t resist grabbing some of them. Especially since it was just a matter of some simple leg swapping to give myself a serviceable Robin and Bane, looks like the same will be true of Catwoman…

    • Jay says:

Yeah, pretty stoked for Bane! It’ll be my first Bane minifig. The Flash also looks pretty cool, he has a really nice head under his mask.

  3. Keaton says:

My favourite is the ‘Racial Stereotype’ set featuring an incredibly cheery American driving a tank facing off against an incredibly angry German driving a car with missiles.

Lego is wading in to dangerous water here…

    • Jay says:

Well, I definitely can’t unsee that now!

    • Jeff says:

You are talking about a German who was a villain and comic book character in oppostiion….. what racial stereotype, they are both Caucasian btw…. maybe you should complain about the faces on almost all the Batman villains… not to mention Loki, etc. in Marvel’s line up…. jeeze….

  4. Warmongurl says:

Don’t see myself purchasing any, but I like to keep up on new Lego offerings so I appreciate the review. They do remind me a bit of the Star Wars Microfighters, which I’ve enjoyed collecting even though I own full-scale versions of the same sets. The Microfighters are fun! I like to see Marvel/ DC fans getting a similar fun option 🙂

    • Jay says:

My wish is that we get a similar product but for LEGO minifigures. Think small vignettes or scenes starring LEGO Minifigures. I think it would be a great way for LEGO to expand on the popular LEGO Minifigures theme AND use it as a vehicle to re-release old minifigs.

      • Warmongurl says:

I like that idea, especially as I was late to minifigure collecting and missed out on a lot of cool figures. Though I’m super psyched to have a chicken guy minifig on the way do to the Lego store’s promotion this month 🙂 🙂 🙂

  5. They’ll save the daaaay, the Super Hero Squad, they’ll hero uuup, agaaaaain, Super Hero Squad (Hero up!), Super Hero Squad (Hero up!), Super Hero Squad (Hero up!), Super Hero Squad.

Anyone else get that song playing when you see these? Hehehe.
