UPDATE: Lego movie minifigures are now on sale in Australia!
BAM! Just as we were just recovering from Series 11, the interwebs (via Brick Fanatics) has delivered the very first image of Lego’s Collectible Minifigures Series 12! The 12th installment of the veritable Minifigure Series will feature characters from 2014’s sure-to-be Blockbuster (see what I did there) animated movie, the aptly titled The Lego Movie.
Here’s the list of characters:
- William Shakespeare
- Gail the Construction Worker
- Panda Guy
- Abraham Lincoln
- Taco Tuesday Guy
- Larry the Barista
- President Business
- Calamity Drone
- Marsha Queen of the Mermaids
- Wild West Wyldstyle
- Scribbe-Face Bad Cop
- Velma Staplebot
- Hard Hat Emmet
- “Where are my Pants?” Guy
- Mrs. Scratchen-Post
- Wiley Fusebot
This already looks to be a fantastic series filled with wacky, colourful and interesting characters. There’s a Panda Guy for crying out loud, and he looks like he’s carrying a miniature Panda Bear. The accessories look incredibly varied from the wild new hairstyles to even more customized novelty cups (yay!).
Speaking of The Lego Movie, the official main trailer debuted 2 days ago, so news on Series 12 seems exceedingly timely. The new trailer is fantastic and shows off the amazing animation technique that makes it look like the entire movie was made using stop-motion videography, which only adds to the charm. It’s looking great so far with its star studded (intentional pun again) cast and fun for the whole family humour. Oh, the bulk of the animation is done by an Australian company, Animal Logic which is really neat.
I expect Series 12 to sell really really really really well, with both existing and new Lego fans wanting to get a piece (heh) of the movie that they can bring home with them. Not to mention that Lego minifigures have become increasingly popular even among non-Lego fans. What I hope doesn’t happen is that they slap on a premium price to cash-in on the inevitable frenzied demand the movie will cause. Blind bag minifigs are already AU$5 and I hope that they stay at that price point.
No solid release date yet, but I expect them to be released right before the movie hits cinemas in early 2014. It’s going to be tricky since the movie premieres in Australia on the 3rd of April (via IMDB) a disappointing TWO whole months after other major markets.
I hope we get Series 12 in January but it’s very likely Lego Australia will start selling these in March to coincide with the movie buzz and inevitable marketing blitz. If that happens, I will probably have to score a set off eBay from American/European sellers because I am absolutely not waiting another 2 extra months just because the physical film reels are apparently sent to us via Sea Post.
The Lego Movie premieres in most major markets in early February and on the 3rd of April 2014 if you so happen to be living down under.
