LEGO Ideas 21311 Voltron now on sale for LEGO VIP members

At long last, the largest LEGO Ideas set to date, LEGO 21311 Voltron is now available for purchase for VIP members! Be sure to login to be able to buy the set.

The massive 2321-piece monstrosity of a LEGO Ideas set is one of my most anticipated sets of 2018. I’ve had to take a bit of a mental break from LEGO in the last few months, but I wasted no time in getting out of hibernation to order the set today.

The LEGO Voltron set doesn’t come cheap, here are the regional pricing and links for your convenience:

The public release date is 1 August 2018, but if you’ve had your eye on this set, I highly recommend buying it as I can see this set selling out of its initial run. Just a hunch.

As a reformed Anime tragic, Voltron holds a special place in my heart, not because of its profound impact on pop culture, but because the set just looks absolutely bonkers.

It was amazing to watch the LEGO Designer video and you can immediately tell that the designer poured in so much care and attention into the design, complete with an exceptionally healthy reverence for the source material.

I can completely empathise with designer Mark Tranter in the video when he says “who doesn’t love giant robots”.

The very fact that they designed it in a way that incorporates each Robot Lion into the model, just blows my mind away and I love that LEGO took a massive risk greenlighting a 2000+ piece, 40cm high robot based on a classic Japanese anime.

Obviously, if you’ve never watched the classic cartoon, or even the modern reboot on Netflix (which is bloody excellent), the appeal of this set dramatically plummets.

But from what I’ve seen of the set, and from chatting to people who have built it, it’s clear that this is a sensational, challenging and one-of-a-kind build, so if you’re into LEGO Mechs, you owe it to yourself to pick this set up.

I love when LEGO innovates and takes bold risks, so I’m voting with my wallet and picking this up on day one. I want more sets like this and absolutely can’t wait for this set to arrive for a build and review.

Are you going to be ordering the LEGO Ideas Voltron set? Let me know in the comments if you’ve been anticipating this set as much as I have!

  1. More than meets the eye…

    Wait, wrong franchise…

So can this only be bought from the Aussie Lego site at present? I want to order it but I *hate* the fact that they want to charge $30 to ship it to metro Sydney! I haven’t seen it on any other sites or in stores yet though so is everyone just paying the outrageous shipping fee and getting it from the Lego store?

I know this is off topic but Jay will you do your review on the minfigures series 18? I’m still a little sad that you left the Ninjago series out since I like your minifgure reviews so much!

    Ooh I need this! 😀

mine is coming tomorrow! but I do have to say this is not a Lego group design. this is an ideas project. so Lego designers just took it and put there 2 cents in. I feel lately Lego has no original designs. they just take movies and make sets out of them. except for the technic line Lego has no original thought going into these projects. hats off to the real designer of this project. took only 22 days to reach 10,000 supporters. infact the lego designer said he is a fan of that guy!

Totally understand what you mean, but I meant that the LEGO designers managed to take the original designer’s vision and turn it into a structurally sound model, which is a really impressive feat.

Obviously they had a really good original model to base it on, and I’m glad that they didn’t deviate too much from it, but the work that goes into actually making a LEGO set cannot be overstated enough.

You have to remember that it has to be designed to be sturdy enough (the upper torso weighs about 1.5kg) and hold up for relatively rough play and articulation.

On it’s way as I type! Our son loves Lego and Voltron but he doesn’t know that this thing even exists so we’re planning on surprising him for his 5th birthday. The timing is perfect.
As a Lego obsessed household, this is going to be so much fun – for all three of us!

Thanks! I’m much better (and healthier) now so it feels good to be back. Started building again, which I didn’t expect to miss so much!
