21319 Friends Central Perk LEGO set officially unveiled!

First of all, how you doin’?

LEGO have officially pulled the curtains back from 21319 Central Perk, which was greenlit in February as a LEGO Ideas set.

The set coincides with the 25th anniversary of Friends, one of the most successful television sitcoms that I think captured a lot of the essence of the mid 90s and early 00s.

The 1,070 piece set is priced at a very respectable US$59.99 / AU$89.99 and has a release date of 1 September.

It will be available from LEGO.com, LEGO Brand Retail and Certified Stores at launch.

See below for LEGO.com links and regional pricing.

Being a television sitcom, the minifigures are the main stars of the set, and I think LEGO’s design team have done a great job translating the beloved characters into minifigures.

From left to right we have: Phoebe Buffay, Chandler Bing, Rachel Green, Ross Geller, Monica Geller, Joey Tribbiani, and Gunther, the manager of the Central Perk coffee shop.

Here’s what they look like versus their television counterparts. Out of the six main characters, I think they captured Phoebe, Ross and Joey particularly well.

Love Joey with his red jacket, and trademark raised-eyebrows “how you doin’?” face.

Here’s a look at the back of the box.

The set itself is pretty simple cutout of the Central Perk cafe. Interestingly, it’s set up in a way that simulates the recording studio, with lighting on each side.

I love the colours used in the set – the eclectic decor of Central Perk is on full display, which makes it look particularly vibrant.

Main sections include Gunther’s bar, with a cash register, massive coffee machine, and a cookie jar, the entrance, a stage for Phoebe to perform, and of course the iconic couch area where the Friends characters come to hang out.

Here’s a look at the couch area, which is easily removable for display or photographs.

I was also really glad to see that we also got the iconic green exteriors and entrance of the Central Perk cafe, along with the logo in the window.

On the left of the shot is a poster of Joey with blue lipstick.

If you’re a fan of the TV series, you’ll remember this hilarious bit, where Joey appears in an ad for Ichiban – lipstick for men.

Oh and fun fact about the set, it contains 15 LEGO coffee cups!

The Friends set got a lot of hate online when it was selected during the Ideas Review round in February, which I think is quite unfair.

I think it’s great to see LEGO continuing to use the Ideas theme to reach new audiences, and there’s nothing wrong with LEGO creating sets that don’t typically appeal to traditional AFOLs.

Personally, I’m a fan of the TV series – I mean, who wasn’t in the mid to late 90s? This will be a set I’m definitely getting, although I won’t be in a massive rush to do so.

I mean, I would not want to pass up an opportunity to get a Chandler Bing minifigure, one of my role models growing up. Joking. Or am I?

Another thing I think LEGO did right with the set is kept the cost way down – I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the official price for the set, and I think it’s quite decent value for AU$80.

So what do you think of the LEGO Friends Central Perk set? Now that you’ve seen the final product, has it swayed your opinion of the set?

It’s a great set with great minifigures but the Rachel and Gunther minifigs should have new head prints.

Respond if you’re thinking the same

    • Jay says:

I haven’t got the set in person, so I can’t quite say, but yeah, Gunther could’ve been improved slightly I reckon. Rachel is just Rachel, and I think they got her hairpiece bang on.

Any idea if this set will be sold in Myer/David Jones?

  3. Wee says:

Hello. May i know how much this central perk set weight? I want to purchase it but i need to know the weight for me to estimate the shipping cost to my country. Would appreciate if you can help me out. Thank you so much

I loved the series and I am so happy that my children fell in love with it too, without being pushed to it ?
I just have to have it and I’m afraid that one set would not be enough. Me personally I’m looking forward to build a whole building on top of the cafe

I’m no at all impressed by this one.
Granted, I never watched the show in the ’90s (although my sister was way into it, so I could nonetheless sing the whole theme song xD) but this set just looks ugly to me. The Minifigures looks pretty spot on, but I personally don’t think the Ideas theme should be Minifigure focused. The mainline sets are already too minifigure-centric in my opinion, with many sets being awful display pieces with inflated price tags because of the Minifigures that Lego know us collectors feel compelled to have.

My favourite ideas sets have been the Ship in a Bottle and Saturn V rocket, both very creative and displayable sets with interesting building techniques that would never come out as mainline sets.
Different strokes for different folks and all that, though.

It’s quite a surprise, and just speaks to how popular the TV series is, but this has actually been one of the best-performing post on the site, traffic-wise and on social media. It caught me completely off-guard.

I do like the freedom within the Ideas theme to take on any model, be it minifigure-focused, or model-focused. The “there’s something for everyone” vibe from LEGO Ideas is quite unique in all of LEGO’s themes, and variety is a good thing. You don’t have to collect every single Ideas set, and for every Friends set, we have a Treehouse as an alternative.

For me, I couldn’t care less about the Big Bang Theory Ideas set, which I thought was a pretty poor choice, but hey, I just skipped that one and that’s perfectly fine.

Damn LEGO , another must have!!!!

  7. Andy says:

I love what they’ve done with this. I wasn’t too hot on the ideas design, but they’ve really improved on it and I think captured Central Perk very well.

Like you, I’m the target market for this set – my Wife and I religiously watched the series when we were dating and we still occasionally dip in to the odd episode on Comedy Central.

I love the little features, as you pointed out, the lighting making it clear it is a filming set, but oddly enough one thing that caught my eye was the way the curtain at the back of the bar has been modelled with a tie-back. Nice little design element.

Also like you, I’m not going to run out and get it on release, but will probably pick it up later. (Although knowing Lego they will have some purchase incentive tie-in on release so I’ll end up going for it!)

    • Jay says:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Andy! Same here, it’s always nice to pop into Youtube and relive clips and highlights from the show.

The couch pivot scene still gets me after all these years.

It looks like a really fun-build, and I definitely need to “clone” Phoebe for an Ursula minifigure.

I’m really keen to find out if there’s going to be a purchase incentive, but I doubt there’ll be one.

  8. Naomi says:

I’m very excited for this one!
I loved the series when it was originally on, it was part of a regular girls night in for years; and I still enjoy watching the reruns now.

It’s released right near my birthday which I’m going to presume isn’t a coincidence 😛 and I’ve already hinted quite loudly that it would be a great present!

    • Jay says:

Same here, there’s just something so timeless about Friends and a lot of the humour has held up surprisingly well.

Hope you manage to get it as a gift for your birthday!

  9. Sabrina Robb says:

Love this! Can’t wait for it to launch!

  10. Louise says:

Please tell me that Joey comes with a “man’s bag”?!

In any case, at least we can re-enact “pivot” with the couch!!
