LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar – Daily Countdown

This year, in addition to the Star Wars Advent Calendar countdown, I’ll also be doing a daily reveal of the Harry Potter LEGO Advent Calendar!

The LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar caught a lot of LEGO fans by surprise, as this is the first new non-City, non-Friends, non-Star Wars Advent Calendar in many, many years.

I’ve been a big fan of the resurgence of LEGO Harry Potter as a core licensed theme, so it’s really great to see it also get the Advent Calendar treatment.

Follow daily for a reveal of each advent calendar window. Whether you’re new, or you’re a returning reader, I’d love for you to hang out and follow along as we count the days to Christmas!

Please also feel free to follow my 2019 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar daily countdown as well.

How does this work?

If you’re new here, I do daily updates on each window of the 2019 Harry Potter Advent Calendar. I usually post updates in the morning, but sometimes if I get too busy at work, updates will be posted in the evening. I’ll update this post each day, as I don’t really enjoy the practice of creating new posts for each day as it keeps it so much cleaner.

Unlike other sites, I’m actually opening each window as I go, and I’ve been able to be relatively spoiler-free to be as surprised as I can get. All reviews, thoughts and reactions are live as we go along, there are no pre-planned photos or thoughts, unless I happen to be travelling or away from home.

Do note that I’m based in Melbourne, Australia (GMT +8) so we’re ahead of most of the world (except New Zealand) so to avoid spoilers, try to come back to this post after you’ve opened your window and built the daily model especially if you’re located in other timezones like the US or UK.

PS: If you’re planning to buy any LEGO for Christmas and would like to support the blog, please use these links if you’re shopping on Amazon, Amazon Australia or LEGO.com! Thanks in advance!

To make it easier for you to check out each day’s section, as this post is going to grow longer with every new window, all you have to do is click on the Day you want, and you will instantly jump to the corresponding section.

While you’re here, please also subscribe to the blog if you’d like to find out about other posts which cover LEGO news, reviews and random musings!

Subscribe to receive updates on new posts and reviews!

To follow along, it’s best to bookmark this post to check back each day. You can also find a link to this post from the home page via this link in the top navbar. If you’re on mobile, you have to expand the burger menu (the button with the 3 lines) to find it.

You can also follow the Jay’s Brick Blog Facebook page, where I’ll be updating it daily at the end of the day (in the US) to avoid accidentally spoiling people!

The front flap of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar opens up to reveal a play mat where you can display the upcoming day’s contents.

I really love the illustration, which depicts the snowy exterior of Hogwarts Castle, and the warm cozy interiors of the Great Hall.

On the ground there’s also a split between interior flooring, and freshly fallen snow on the ground.

A major change to this year’s Advent Calendar is the design of the doors. The cut-out doors, which open to reveal a bag of parts and instructions are much, much easier to open this year, which is an amazing feat as in previous years, you could tear them open if you weren’t careful enough.

Great job, whoever came up with this fix!

The instructions for the Harry Potter Advent Calendar LEGO models are printed on each door. Some of them are easy to follow, but sometimes they can be pretty tricky and you’ll have to study the diagram quite hard to ensure that you’re building the models correctly.

Without further ado, let’s kick off the 2019 LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar!

Day 1

We begin the inaugural Harry Potter Advent Calendar with the titular character himself – a Harry Potter minifigure!

This version of Harry is exclusive to this set, and has a delightful tie-in to the festive theme of the advent calendar. Harry is decked out in a “H for Harry” Christmas jumper knitted by Mrs Weasley.

“Hey, look — Harry’s got a Weasley sweater, too!”

Fred and George were wearing blue sweaters, one with a large yellow F on it, the other a G.

“Harry’s is better than ours, though,” said Fred, holding up Harry’s sweater. “She obviously makes more of an effort if you’re not family.”

Harry also comes with a brown wand, and khaki pants.

He has an alternate face, which has a startled/distressed expression, and there’s back printing, which has more of the light blue specks all over the dark blue jumper.

The Harry Potter Advent Calendar is off to a particularly strong start with a minifigure in Day 1, and Harry Potter fans are going to be delighted to get such an obscure yet festive Harry Potter variant.

Can’t wait to see what we get tomorrow! It’s mostly a Star Wars Advent Calendar tradition, but I’m actually hoping that we’ll get some sort of “Wand Rack” in this calendar.

Day 2

We continue into Day 2 of the LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar with another absolute stunner of a model – a micro Hogwarts Express!

Note: Please disregard how I built the train. I completely missed a red 1 x 3 for the carriage!

The iconic magical steam train that transports eager students from Platform Nine and Three Quarters to Hogwarts is captured brilliantly with black and red elements.

I especially love the use of the semi-circle bricks in the Locomotive which gives it its shape, and also the passenger car at the back.

The lines in the passenger car also work surprisingly well to make it look like it has windows and doors.

That’s Day 2 so far, and the LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar is off to a blistering start, with two amazing models and I absolutely cannot wait to see what we get tomorrow!

Day 3

I really love the level of surprises emerging from the Harry Potter Advent Calendar, with Day 3’s set of snow-topped Christmas Trees.

They’re simple yet charming builds, and I love the visual design of having most of the trees covered in thick snow, with the dark green leaves at the base poking out.

There are two star toppers, and even though we’re just in the beginning of December, it feels mighty festive already.

I figured that most people would have had their Christmas Trees setup at home by now, or are planning to do so very soon, so this suits the time of the year particularly well.

There’s no direct Harry Potter tie-in with this build, but I just love how early we got a Christmas Tree, compared to other Advent Calendars which typically save them for much closer to Christmas.

Check in tomorrow to see what Day 4 brings!

Day 4

Day 4 gives us a Large Christmas Tree to join yesterday’s set of two smaller Christmas trees. Like the other trees, this larger version also has frost covering the leaves, gold baubles and is topped by a gold star, much like Magical Christmas Trees that adorn the Hogwarts Great Hall.

At least it goes decently well with the other two smaller trees. It’s not the most exciting model in the world, but I like how simply its designed.

Here’s hoping tomorrow’s window is much more interesting!

Day 5

Day 5 of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar gives us what I feel is the equivalent of Star Wars Weapons Racks – a Gryffindor House Banner.

It’s just a red and gold flag hung from a stick. That’s it.

There’s really not much to say or comment on here. Sure, the Gryffindor colours are there, but they could’ve done so much better and added in a bit more to flesh Day 5’s build out.

Pretty disappointing and I hope that tomorrow makes up for it!

Day 6

After yesterday’s supremely disappointing build, we get a cracker of a minifigure – Head of House Gryffindor herself, Professor Minerva McGonagall!

The minifigure is identical to the one from 75954 Great Hall except that this one only has a one-sided head. Professor McGonagall is dressed in her bottle-green robes which has elaborate circular patterns on it, as well as her necklace printed prominently.

Here’s a look at her back printing, which is equally as detailed.

Professor McGonagall is an amazing addition, especially for those of you who don’t own the Great Hall set, which was the largest set from the first rebooted Harry Potter wave.

I’m very pleased with this minifigure and this kind of makes up for yesterday’s disappointing banner.

Day 7

Day 7 of the LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar gives us more elements for what is shaping up to be a magical Hogwarts Christmas scene – a Great Hall Table.

“It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets.”  – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The table is exactly as described/shown in the movie long, with bench seats and featuring 2 pearl gold goblets on them.

It’s simple, but effective enough for a seasoned Harry Potter fan to instantly identify it as belonging to the Great Hall.

It’s not the most exciting or unique build, but I really love how this scene is coming together, and it’s at this stage where you can start assembling a very convincing Christmas scene.

Check in tomorrow to see what Day 8 brings!

Day 8

You can’t have a Christmas feast without food, so lo and behold, Day 8 gives us a traditional Roast Turkey and some potatoes to go with it. The jury it out on whether there are magical Turkeys in JK Rowling’s Wizarding World.

It’s a pretty uneventful inclusion, but at least you get a whole Turkey, where the drumsticks can detach – these aren’t the most common piece, so it’s not all for nothing.

I wonder if Wizards can magic their Turkeys on their tables and roast them right before eating.

Check in tomorrow for hopefully a more exciting build!

Day 9

Oh boy, these house banners truly are the ‘Weapons Racks’ of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar. Day 9 gives us a Slytherin version of their house banners.

They’re identical to the ones from Day 5 except that the flags are green and silver.

I can’t help but think that they should’ve just included all the banners in one window. So far, not very impressed by these banners, and it makes yesterday’s Turkey look like so much more of a better deal.

Hope Day 10 doesn’t disappoint!

Day 10

The Harry Potter Advent Calendar continues to be exceedingly generous with the minifigures with Day 10’s Ron Weasley.

Like Harry, Ron is also attired in a Weasley Christmas jumper, knitted by Mrs Weasley herself. Ron’s “R” is slightly crooked, which is a great nod to the fact that the Weasley brothers all felt like Harry got the best jumper.

Like Harry’s, I really love the little bits of detail printed on the jumper, such as the little flecks of yellow, as well as the ribbing on the neck and edge.

I also really love Ron’s shocked/disgusted face.

It’s great that Harry has a friend, and partner in crime to terrorise Professor McGonagall. Please, just no more house banners!

Day 11

Day 11 gives us another Hogwarts Great Hall table, similar to the one from Day 7, except that it has a candle on it, instead of goblets.

Pretty plain, although the candle piece is still a pretty neat element.

The tables can be joined together to form a longer table, which is much closer to the long tables in the Great Hall.

A bit meh, since it’s pretty much an identical build to Day 7, so here’s hoping that Day 12 is much more interesting!

I don’t know about you, but the Harry Potter Advent Calendar has been very up and down. There are some really great days, and a lot of meh days.

We’re close to half way and I’m not 100% sure I’m enjoying it as much as I thought I would mostly due to the boring builds.

Day 12

We’re officially halfway through the Harry Potter Advent Calendar, and to officially mark the midway point we get… a dish with a croissant, three cookies and a pie for Day 12.

Oh and two pearl gold goblets, which I forgot to photograph, because I was so underwhelmed.

Because hey, yesterday’s Great Hall Table was looking bare.

I really don’t see why they couldn’t combine both Day 11 and Day 12 together, because just getting food and some goblets isn’t my idea of a fun Advent Calendar window.

I’m really disliking the Harry Potter Advent Calendar so far.

Day 13

Is this some kind of sick joke?

It’s Friday the 13th, which is known for all sorts of misfortune and bad luck, and I cannot think of a more fitting punishment than receiving yet another house banner – this time Ravenclaw.

The LEGO design team and their managers need to take a long hard look at themselves and reflect on whether it was absolutely necessary to have what is most likely going to be FOUR days of House Banners.

FOUR!!!

Four individual windows in an advent calendar dedicated to two multi-coloured flags on the pole.

I’m just sad at this point. At least food accessories are somewhat useful – these house banners are just an awful experience.

I really feel sorry for younger kids who look forward to opening up their daily advent calendar only to be greeted with these house banners.

Day 14

Thank God today isn’t another house banner, table or random assortment of food. Day 14 gives us Hermione Granger, part of the Gryffindor trinity.

Hermione is a fan-favourite, thanks to her combination of bravery and smarts and really, is the true reason Harry Potter didn’t meet an untimely death in nearly every book.

This version of Hermione sees her in her Hogwarts robes, with a Gryffindor scarf around her neck.

She has an alternate scared face, and back printing as well.

So there we have it, the trio is now completely assembled, which should delight any Harry Potter fans, especially those of you who don’t own all three yet. Having three main characters in an Advent Calendar is commendable, but I kinda wish that Hermione had a more interesting outfit like Harry and Ron.

I also hope that we get more non-Gryffindor characters in the next few days. JK Rowling has always shown an disproportional bias towards Gryffindor in the books, and I’d really love to see characters from other Houses get a bit more of the spotlight.

So glad today isn’t a House Banner. Check in tomorrow to see what we get next!

Day 15

Looks like the Harry Potter Advent Calendar has started to pick up some slack with Day 15’s build, which I’ve decided to name as a Snowmage.

It’s essentially a Snowman, with a Wizard’s hat and an orange scarf for a bit of personality. It’s probably the most fun build in a LONG time, and I really like getting another extra scarf accessory, which I can repurpose quite easily.

This is what I want to see more of – builds that are fun, interesting and have some sort of loose tie-in to the Harry Potter universe.

Hope this keeps up, and god help me if we get another house banner tomorrow!

Day 16

Whoa! After what has been a torrid few days, it looks like the Harry Potter Advent Calendar is quickly making a magical turnaround.

Day 16 gives us a Wizard’s Chess set. Wizard’s Chess works exactly like Muggle Chess, except the pieces are enchanted and often beat each other to bits when capturing one another.

The build occupies a 4 x 4 plate, where you build a white and black chessboard, with 4-pieces.

Update: I have completely goofed up the layout of the chessboard :/

This is the exact type of build I’d love to see more of. Wizard’s Chess is mentioned plenty in the books, so it’s great to have a nod towards it, and for the design to be quite pleasing to the eye as well.

Oh and an extra bonus, you get given an extra black and white microfigure, which is a huge win!

I’m very pleased with the last 2 days which have been a massive improvement over the last week! I hope this keeps up and we get more magical goodies in the next few windows!

Day 17

We knew it was coming, so here it is, Hufflepuff House Banners.

Yay.

Day 18

Thank goodness that we won’t be getting any more of those house banners. Day 18 gives us our very first non-Gryffindor minifigure, Professor Filius Flitwick!

He’s best known for being the Charms Master, and head of House Ravenclaw of Hogwarts. This version has him dressed in a grey vest, with a very smart bow-tie.

Here’s a look at his alternate surprised face and back printing. It was a very nice surprise to get not one but two extra bowties in the window, which I don’t mind as they’re great and semi-rare minifigure accessories.

All in all, a pretty good day, and I do hope we get more non-Gryffindor characters in the next few days!

Day 19

Day 19 continues to add to the Great Hall Christmas scene with a festive fireplace.

It has a bit of Christmas flavour with a wreath hanging on it, and I also really like the simple yet detailed design, made possible with a round 1 x 1 tile and a decorative bracket – which combined, makes for a great visual effect.

I imagine this fireplace, in addition to keeping Hogwarts students warm and toasty during Winter, also doubles up as an entryway into the Floo Network. It would’ve been so fun if they had included someone’s head in the embers!

Not quite a bad day – when compiled with everything else, the Fireplace is one of the most substantial builds so far, and it really looks like it ties a lot of the other furniture together.

Tune in tomorrow to see what Day 20 brings!

Day 20

It looks like the worst is behind us as Day 20 gives us quite another substantial, and surprising build – a pedestal for what seems to be a minifigure statue? I’m guessing that will come tomorrow.

This four-sided pedestal seems quite simple, but boasts four printed tiles bearing the crests of all four houses.

If you’ve been a LEGO fan for some time, you’ll know that printed elements are pretty rare, so having all four house crests printed on 2 x 2 tiles is really special, and should delight any LEGO Harry Potter fan.

I’m really happy with Day 20’s build and it does feel like we’re going to end the calendar strongly. Maybe this makes up for the lacklustre first half.

The pedestal is clearly meant to be combined with the next day, so I’m really looking forward to what we get tomorrow!

Day 21

Wow, this is one character I never expected to pop out of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar. Day 21 gives us a statue of the Architect of Hogwarts.

As the name suggests, the Architect was responsible for designing Hogwarts castle, alongside Ravenclaw founder Rowena Ravenclaw. A gold statue of the Architect can be found in the Entrance Hall.

The statue is completely cast in pearl gold, including the beard piece and looks really good. He wields a scroll with what is probably the blueprint, and a micro-model of Hogwarts, which he can grasp in his hands.

You can pop him on yesterday’s pedestal, to make for quite an impressive model.

The Architect of Hogwarts is an incredible inclusion, and will delight most Harry Potter fans, given it’s a somewhat obscure yet historical and important figure in Hogwarts system.

It looks like we’re ending this calendar really strongly, so I can’t wait to see what the remaining three days bring!

Day 22

Day 22 gets us a little more in the festive mood with a collection of house-coloured presents, which would be perfect to place under the Christmas trees we got earlier in the calendar.

While it isn’t the most exciting build, I do like that they correspond to all four houses, and the inclusion of two wax sealed envelop tiles. These tiles are fairly new, having only made an appearance in the Beauxbatons Carriage set from this year’s wave of Harry Potter sets.

So we have our gifts all sorted and only two days left of the Harry Potter calendar!

Day 23

It’s the second last day of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar, and we receive what is most likely the last minifigure – the great and awe inspiring headmaster of Hogwarts himself – Albus Dumbledore.

Dumbledore is dressed in his dark red robes, which is a nice homage to the Richard Harris Dumbledore from Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. Richard Harris sadly passed away after that, which was a shame as he really captured Dumbledore’s silent power well in his portrayal.

This is the same Dumbledore as the one from the Great Hall set, and he comes with what’s likely to be the Elder Wand.

The printing on his torso is immaculately detailed, and you can even see his hat printed on the back. Here’s how he looks like without his beard.

That’s Day 23 so far, and as you can see the entire scene is coming together for quite a poignant Great Hall Christmas scene.

Check in tomorrow one last time for the big finale!

Day 24

It’s Christmas Eve which means its the final day of the Harry Potter Advent Calendar.

We end on a particularly poignant note, with a Hogwarts Invitation starter park – a collection of items that Harry Potter packs, in anticipation for the beginning of his education at Hogwarts.

There’s a nougat-coloured chest to pack all his belongings, a bar of chocolate, (most likely meant to represent Chocolate Frogs), a wand, a Hogwarts acceptance letter, a spellbook, and of course Hedwig, Harry’s snowy owl.

I really liked the printed elements included in the set, especially the letter from Hogwarts inviting Harry to come study, signed by Professor McGonagall, as well as the spellbook with instructions on “Wingardium Leviosa” the levitating charm.

This is as Harry Potter as it gets, and will no doubt delight fans of the books or the movies, given that this collection of items holds a special significance to the beginnings of Harry’s adventures in Hogwarts.

Final Thoughts and Wrap-Up

Before we get into my thoughts of the very first LEGO Harry Potter Advent calendar, I’d like to give a quick shout out to everyone who’s been following along.

Thank you SO much for participating, sharing your thoughts and for being great company, even as we opened up House Banner after House Banner.

I’ve had a blast counting down the days with each and everyone of you, and I hope that you’ve enjoyed following along!

This being the very first Harry Potter Advent Calendar, I was really impressed with the minifigure line-up, which has been amazingly strong.

There’s absolutely no filler here, with major characters from the books and movies all accounted for. For the price you pay, it’s actually amazing value to get Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, McGonagall and Flitwick all in one sub-AU$50 set.

Harry and Ron with their exclusive Christmas Jumpers are the icing on the cake, as is the Architect of Hogwarts, which is such an amazingly cool statue to include.

I would’ve liked a bit more house diversity, as we pretty much only get Gryffindors, and one Ravenclaw (Professor Flitwick), which is a little disappointing, but understandable given that these characters were most prominent in the Philosopher’s Stone.

On the Advent Calendar as a whole, once the entire Christmas Great Hall scene comes together, it really does feel quite special.

The models, builds and characters all come from the first book/movie, and seek to commemorate Harry’s first Christmas and year in Hogwarts.

I do love the playability of it all, as you can set it up in so many different configurations, and the addition of things like presents, food and tables means that there’s plenty of play features.

This is a classic example of a set that is greater than the sum of it parts, and I’m really happy with the direction LEGO took with this Advent Calendar.

That said, this was a really inconsistent calendar, with many windows early on feeling like filler days. Enough has been said about the House Banners, but I feel like LEGO could’ve consolidated a number of days (Banners + Food) to give us more builds or models.

I also really liked the high quality elements included, such as the printed house emblems, and Hogwarts letters, which really makes it feel like you’re getting more than your money’s worth.

Out of all the days, I think my favourites has to be the Hogwarts Express, Wizard’s Chess, Architect of Hogwarts and the final day.

The Hogwarts Express is my pick for best window of the calendar, and I’m sure many of you will feel the same. Let me know in the comments what your favourite day was.

All in all, this has been a really great Advent Calendar – a little rough around the edges, and not without faults but ending very strongly, did help me change my view of the set.

I really do hope that LEGO doesn’t repeat this House Banner thing again next year, and I’d really love to see a sequel to this Advent Calendar, perhaps based on The Chamber of Secrets, which would be a great follow-up.

That’s it for now, thank you SO much for following every day and for leaving hundreds of comments on the post.

Merry Christmas to you, wherever you’re celebrating in the world and I hope that you’ll find plenty of LEGO under the tree tomorrow!

Thank you so much for your efforts! My 9 year old son and I only found you on the day that we got the architect, as I Googled to try and find out who it was. I only wish we had discovered you sooner as we enjoyed your posts as much as we enjoyed the calendar. The flags were a bit much but as you said, the scene came together and it was a heck of a good deal for $49 Canadian!
    Merry Christmas!

Love the owl. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

  8. Veda says:

Thank you for blogging the Harry Potter Advent calendar.
I think a better job could have been done withe the Ravenclaw colors; gray for bronze?
There are several days I like, the snowman, the chess set, the Christmas trees, the pedestal, and Hedwid.

  9. Thanks again for a great review!! I have been following you for the past few years and I look forward to it every time! I have absolutely loved this Harry Potter one and I was so excited to see that you loved it too.

    Have a wonderful Christmas!
Love from a wet Cape Town.

  10. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

You still haven’t updated day 24 yet? Are you saving it for Christmas or something?

  11. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Hahaha! When I got the architect guy I thought that he was a Dumbledore! Love your posts!

I can’t believe that Christmas is tomorrow! (Insert excited squealing here)

  12. Adam says:

Thanks again Jay for another great blog! I’ve had either City or Star Wars calendars the last few years and have looked forward to this blog every morning just as much as the calendars themselves! I too was a bit underwhelmed at the start of this HP set but now I’ve opened window 24 I appreciate the amazing value of this great play set. Not entirely sure what 24 is I look forward to your post. Looks like 2 pieces in it are very rare at least.
On another note, window 6 contained a spare house banner for me and not the wizard!!! (So I have 5 of the damn things!!!). I emailed lego and he came through the post a few days ago which is great service for this time of year too. Thanks again and I look forward to next years again. Merry Christmas from the UK!!!

  13. Paul Castle says:

Nice set of presents today, glad they didn’t take four doors for them!

  14. Debbie van Velzen says:

I didn’t get the turkey on day 8. I got the pastry set twice. ? And as boring as a turkey is, I’m fairly gutted, cos extra pastries is even more boring. ?

PS Thank you for your explanation of the gold statue! So interesting. ?

    • Jay says:

Oh that’s a bummer! You can write to LEGO Customer Service who will be more than happy to send out a replacement turkey.

You’re welcome! It’s honestly such a cool Harry Potter reference and I’m really surprised that they included it in

  15. Jeroen says:

Actually found your blog because of today’s (21st) build. We had no idea what to make of it. Such an interesting piece of history. Learned something new about the Potterverse. I think the mini build on the side is the miniature Hogwarts the original statue holds in its hand. It does fit on the LEGO version as well!

    • Jay says:

That’s awesome, welcome and I’m glad I could help to figure out Day 21’s build! Yes, I only realised that he could hold the mini Hogwarts AFTER i finished taking the photos!

  16. Sheridan says:

“The Architect of Gospel is an incredible inclusion”
    Autocorrect strikes again!

  17. M S L Norris says:

We are waiting expectantly to have you explain day 21 to us. We have no idea what to make of it.

  18. Stu says:

The calendar gets even better on Day 21. So creative I had to look it up! Then you can’t un-see it. Brilliant.

I was disappointed by this set at half-way because of the repetitive house banners but my 6-year-old son absolutely loves it. He knows the stories and for him the banners are an essential part of the Christmas scene it is creating. I think they could have paired them up for better value but still. There’s such good festive play/imagination value.

Thanks, as always for the reviews. We look it up every day and have good discussions about the calendars (I’ve got Star Wars, obviously)

    • Jay says:

Yeah, the Harry Potter has engineered a remarkable turnaround, but that still doesn’t leave the sour taste of the first half in my mouth. So glad your six year old is enjoying it! I think it’s brilliant the way its setup, which allows you to customise the scene and with so many interactive elements as well.

That said, how good is the Star Wars one??

      • Eric Kilchoer says:

Really good i think the Christmas gonk is the best thing come out of any calendar Yet I’ve been here with you for three years

  19. Paul Castle says:

Yep, it’s certainly good to have a couple of days of proper builds!

  20. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

I love fire places! To bad I don’t have one.

  21. Paul Castle says:

Professor Flitwick and a fabulous festive fireplace! Two days of greatness!

  22. Justin says:

A special lego set about harry potter, but I’m quite disappointed to see this design needs more improvement

  23. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

The 16 was my birthday! Do you remember the scene in, what was it? The first? Or the second? There was that GIANT chess set where the pieces moved?

  24. sheridan says:

On the bright side, the rest of the calendar will be a surprise. It does make for three boring days after you’ve had the first banner, but I can see the merits of it – two tables, four banners… It’s all combining to make a minimalist Hogwarts scene for those who can’t afford (or don’t have the space) for the full sets. This is all speaking as somebody who gets the Star Wars Advent calendar gifted to them each year…

    • Ben says:

I am actually worried we won’t be surprised. There are the 4 house themed gifts, the fireplace and Dumbledore still on the box. I am guessing that is what we have left

  25. Iluvharrypotter says:

I like the house banners. I like how all the houses are represented. I agree that they could have been more interesting, but I like them.

  26. joske says:

Oh Jay, this is horrible. Can you pleeease next year open everything as soon as you get the calendar and tell us if it is as horrible as this year or if it’s worth the money. many thanks!

    • isitaboutmycube says:

Or you could, you know, look at absolutely any promotional image of the product or one of the dozens of reviews on Amazon from people that opened the whole thing in one go. Let Jay (and the rest of us) have this once -a-year bit of fun.

    • Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Uh, no offence but that REALLY takes the fun out of it. Opening them all at once I mean. And if you were thinking he could simply only post the on the day he got one even after he opened it, forget it. Jay is a person, just like you! He has feelings. Just because YOU see them the right day HE won’t! For him the surprise would be RUINED.

      Ps: no disrespect.

    • Bruce says:

Or he could do what he always does and you can deal with it.

  27. Paul Castle says:

Great news! No more house banners after today!

  28. James says:

    This is so AMAZING.

  29. T fox says:

    17th December
Back down again, the only silver lining being we know we shouldn’t get any more banners

  30. Vlasta Benedict says:

I can’t wait for the Hufflepuff house banner!!!!!!
    Just kidding.

  31. Scott S says:

This build is way cooler than it appears, by adding one of the extra caps (?) Pin up, to one of the two pawns you get a reasonable bishop, if you count the mini-fig as a knight you have the four pieces needed for Tic-Tac-Chec, a “scaled down” strategy game created to help teach chess that’s played on a 4×4 board.!.!.! The rules for T-T-C can be found online

  32. Mike says:

In chess the queen always starts on her own colour, putting the two queens directly across from each other in the same row with the king on the other central square beside her.

  33. Chris says:

On a traditional chessboard the queen goes on her own colour, so they do start opposite each other. Have to admit I don’t know if the books say otherwise for wizard chess anywhere…

  34. Luke says:

Jay when I started Lego Advent calendars 2 years ago I looked forward to your blogs each day but now I am very disiponted in you because you hate on the Harry Potter Advent calendar so much. I have been enjoying getting all these accessories for my hoggy warty hogwarts

    • Someguy says:

That’s not hating. He just wants different stuff. Not everyone has to agree on everything. And the banners are kind of a letdown after the first one.

    • Paul Castle says:

Don’t be disappointed in someone for not loving something you do, allow people the freedom to like and dislike what they will. I’m happy you’re enjoying the HP Advent, it’s just not pushing everyone’s buttons.

  35. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Told you that you would like it. Hehehe. ??

  36. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

You will like the days coming I know you will. ?

  37. Alice says:

I agree that the Harry Potter calendar has been boring in terms of builds but I have a counterpoint to the take that it’s a total dumpster fire:

The Harry Potter calendar is bringing alive one coherent scene from the books is a way that I (and my child) find quite lovely and festive.

It doesn’t necessarily make the most of what is great about LEGOs but for my kid, who loves imaginative play and stories, it’s delightful.

Your takes crack me up and I like your honest analysis but do me a favor and don’t knock the Harry Potter calendar in your Star Wars write ups! My other kid has the Star Wars advent so we’re reading that to find out what some of the builds are and my first kid is reading over my shoulder going “hey! What’s a dumpster fire? What’s wrong with my calendar”?” ?

  38. Paul Castle says:

I love the snowman! This is the sort of thing that should be in the advent calendar, isn’t it, not the boring partwork stuff.

  39. CassC says:

So I completely screwed up and just realized that I opened up AND put together day 24 instead of day 14. Had the small trees and one of the flags set up in that corner and only saw the 4 without confirming that it was proceeded by a 1. That’s what I get for doing it before a cup of coffee!

Overall, the HP calendar definitely isn’t as good as the Star Wars one. Glad we got both.

  40. Jason says:

My boys like the banners… they enjoy knowing which colours belong to which house…

    • Rob Morgan says:

Me to. My wife has the HP calendar, and I have SW. I think the house flags make a great backdrop to the Hogwarts great hall scene being created

      • Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

        I know right!

      • Carter Miller says:

My wife saw this comment and asked if I wrote it under a psuedonym! I’m opening the Star Wars one and she is doing the Harry Potter one, and as much as a fan as I am of Star Wars and the SW calendar every year, I’m just a little jealous of the cohesiveness of her builds. We grabbed a green Lego square and she is building the Great Hall Xmas day by day, and it is a blast! Hope the SW team takes note!

  41. Deb says:

So far this calendar is very underwhelming. Good thing I got this one for myself. The kids have Star Wars and City which have been much better.

    • Jay says:

I agree. I guess I was expecting a lot more, it being the first Harry Potter Advent Calendar, so I had pretty high hopes. Star Wars has been surprisingly great this year and I’m enjoying it a lot!

  42. E says:

100% with you! But worse, instead of a Gryffindor flag On day 5, we got a duplicate Ravenclaw, so today was very sad. 1/6 of the month is flags, and we don’t even have all four by the end ?
We’ve loved LEGO city advents for years, but they should be embarrassed by this one.

    • Jay says:

Oh no! You can always write into LEGO for the correct replacement but I feel like it’d be a lot of effort for just a few flags.

    • Emelie says:

I got a scratched Harry’s head, on the very first day. I contacted lego and in a week I had the replacement head! They have excellent customer service.
Now it is probably too tight to get the correct banner before Christmas, but still.

  43. Baxter says:

My son is young and he can do all of these builds with no help, which he loves. That’s the only redeeming grace for this awful calendar.

    • Jay says:

Oh that’s great, it must be so fulfilling for him! Shame the builds have been pretty poor. Day 2’s Hogwarts Express build set my expectations so high for me, and maybe the Xmas Trees, but it’s been disappointing build after disappointing build since. I desperately want the second half to be better, but I don’t have high hopes.

  44. Tina says:

And to top it off that’s not even the ravenclaw house colours (which are blue and BRONZE).
So it’s just a random nonsense flag

  45. Rose says:

Yeah my son’s face yesterday was very disappointed 🙁 And I realised he’ll surely get a fourth flag window as well. And I suspect a third table is coming, too, so a bit repetitive. Still, he knows he’s very lucky to have a Lego advent calendar at all and is glad to have it, but he likes the little builds best, much more than even the minifigs. The Hogwarts Express has been his favourite by far. I wonder what today’s window will hold!

    • Jay says:

Oh no, not a third table…

I feel like the calendar peaked with the Hogwarts Express. On Day 2, which isn’t a compliment at all about this calendar.

      • Rose says:

Yeah that and the Christmas tree from day 4 were great, yesterday’s snowman was fun and we love today’s build (16th), plus there’s some nice minifigs. Things are looking up, though we know that last flag is there somewhere….haha

    • CassC says:

That’s what I’m thinking too. It has been flag, mini figure, table, food a few times now and there is still one more flag to go. 🙁

  46. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Yeah the banners are kinda boring for most and I HATE the days I get them, but still they maybe can be added to the LEGO Harry Potter great hall for a nice background!

  47. isitaboutmycube says:

While I’m not thrilled about yet another house banner (and the implication of a fourth), I’m actually really enjoying this calendar. I’ve just had to contextualize it differently than the City and SW ones. City provides a number of small vignettes to be placed as part of a larger winter scene; SW is all about mini-builds and mini-figs with only tenuous links to each other.

But this HP calendar is clearly intended as a singular scene, akin to a small set, put together one bit at a time. Sure, no one loves a day of just pastries, but viewing them as another element of a growing set makes them a lot more enjoyable. While I agree that this calendar wouldn’t be ideal for kids who are expecting an amazing new figure or build, every day, I’m hopeful it’ll all come together nicely, in the end.

(Also, as an aside – yours is the first – and favorite – blog I read every morning, right after opening that day’s door. I love coming here. But the comment section is getting more and more filled with spoilers of various sorts. I mean, it’s one thing to infer that another banner is coming along, but some people seem intent on mentioning whole elements that are coming next, like the obnoxious kid who insists on spoiling the movie. I don’t care how much someone doesn’t like what comes on day 19 or whatever, or that they got something out of order – please stop spoiling it for the rest of us. So if there’s any way you could perhaps crack down a bit and let people know that spoilers are not welcome [as is the case on all other blogs], I’m just going to cut out reading the comments, altogether. Just a thought, thanks.)

    • Jay says:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and yes, I agree that it’s building towards something, but I feel like it could’ve been executed so much better – there are so many Harry Potter/Hogwarts elements that could’ve been done – maybe a wall section with portraits, brick-built statues etc.

I think Day 2’s amazing Hogwarts Express raised my expectations too high of what to expect, and the repetitive nature of builds (banners and tables) are a little grating, considering nearly every other calendar gives you a unique build or even thing each day.

Thanks for raising up the comments and spoilers issue! I’ve been relatively spoiler-free myself and that’s been great, so I’ll try and keep a closer eye out on comments and filter out some of the spoilery ones.

  48. Levi says:

I’m (along with my kids) a huge HP and lego HP fan, l think the 2018 l, and some 2019 sets are amazing, but l am soooo happy l didnt by any advent calendar this year, not especially this one.
These banners at least could be printed. And btw they don’t even reflect the true colors…

    • Jay says:

Printed banners would’ve completely changed the way I feel!

Unfortunately the banners are based on the movie, which somehow decided to make Ravenclaw blue and silver instead of blue and bronze.

  49. Alessio says:

Yeah, it does kinda suck. Now we know what the next 5 days are going to have too.

  50. Paul Castle says:

I’m astonished. I am going to complain to Lego after this is finished.

  51. Tom says:

Honestly, looking at the box it’s clear how poor of a calendar this is. The minifigs are the only real gain here. At least they seem to try with the Star Wars ones. This is the first year they’ve offered a Wizarding World calendar. Maybe next year they’ll start to mix in magical creatures and Diagon Alley content to make this a more comprehensive package, instead of feeling like a polybag add on for another set.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, I was expecting a lot more, but it’s clear that this is a scene-building Advent Calendar. I really hope the end result feels justified.

  52. Mark Griffiths says:

I was so looking forward to this but now I’m just like meh another banner – hopefully a mini figure tomorrow

  53. Si Fir says:

It’s not even the proper Ravenclaw colours! They should have banners of blue and BRONZE! I know they were silver in the films because of problems with filming but there is no excuse for getting them wrong in the set.
I’m really disappointed in this calendar so far, the HP sets I have bought for my wife all have some really nice touches this is definitely missing.

    • Jay says:

Thanks for being a book purist 🙂

Yeah, it’s a drastically different feeling from all the Harry Potter sets, which have consistently felt like you were getting more value than the price suggested. The magic is missing for sure.

  54. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

    You won’t like day 13!

  55. Sara says:

On Day 12 we got a mini figure that looks like a solid gold dumbledore. No face, but with a golden staff and some sort of golden cannon. I’ve googled but no idea what it is, the only reason we think it’s Dumbledore is the knotted beard (also gold). Wish I could attach a picture! Obviously better than pastries, but not sure why or which book this comes from?

    • Jay says:

Oh? It sounds like you got a mixed up window. Sometimes the windows get out of whack, so I’d write in to LEGO to tell them and request a proper Day 12 replacement.

  56. JesCat says:

I hated Day 12 – for the midpoint of the advent calendar a few odds and ends that aren’t even something you have to (or really can) assemble, is completely lame. Truthfully, these food pieces should be coupled with the tables. I’m furious about day 12, honestly. I deadens the greatness of the mini-figs, trains, and trees.

  57. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

I like the pie, but I agree with you that they should have included them together. BE WARNED, the box shows 3 tables!

    • Jay says:

Hey, just a mention, try to cool it on spoilers. A lot of us are trying to stay relatively spoiler-free with this calendar, and I’m also not paying a lot of attention to the box so as to not spoil the surprise. Please be considerate 🙂

  58. Paul Castle says:

There’s nothing to build! It’s just a bag of bits that don’t connect together.

If next year’s calendar looks to be along the same lines as this I’m going to leave it.

  59. Baxter says:

Very disappointed in the Harry calendar. I like the mini gigs, but outside of that one really good build with the train and otherwise very generic and/or repetitive.

    • Jay says:

Yep, you’ve nailed the sentiment. It’s shocking that we’ve had 7 days dedicated to banners, tables and food. That’s more than a third of advent calendar windows!

  60. Kristi says:

I like your honesty about this set, and I completely agree. Most of the days are meh, with just a few good ones sprinkled in. I’m a big Harry Potter fan and this calendar overall has been disappointing; which makes me sad. My son is doing the Star Wars advent calendar and that one in comparison is far better.

    • Jay says:

Same, I’m a massive Harry Potter fan myself, so my disappointment is magnified because of that. Especially cause all the other Harry Potter sets have been really good.

  61. Melissa J says:

Hi. I just wanted to point out a mistake on the picture of the Hogwarts Express Day 2. In the picture, the back end only shows 2 levels of red. There should be 3. Just an FYI. Thanks for posting this however. It’s helped me on my first advent calendar from Lego Harry Potter

  62. Christopher Maher says:

This set so far seems very disappointing compared to the Star Wars sets. If you simply removed the minifigs, almost nothing left would even hint that it belonged to a Harry Potter set.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, it’s light and day compared with Star Wars. At the time of this comment, we’ve had 7 days dedicated to flags, tables and food. Make of that what you will.

  63. Colby says:

Unfortunately, my Harry’s head is so tightly on the neck peg that it won’t turn. And it’s on the scared side, so… 🙁

  64. JesCat says:

I know I’m in the minority here, but I actually am quite fond of the house banners. They’re a simple nod to a Harry Potter staple and unlike anything that I have in any of my Harry Potter sets. I’m excited for them to be on my shelf with my Hagrid’s Hut, Quidditch Pitch, and full-size Hogwarts Express.

    • Heidi says:

      I love them too

    • Beth says:

I love this set also. We did Star Wars last year and I thought that was a disappointment. I was unimpressed with the ships made from six small pieces of Legos we took the tray put to keep the scene in tact and are putting Hogwarts together slowly

    • Jay says:

I don’t hate them on principle as yes, they make sense, but I hate that we’re going to have four entire days dedicated to them. They would’ve been so much more interesting if they were printed.

  65. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Ron’s cool. Not much to say about that! Haha.

  66. Paul Castle says:

Great to have both the boys, we just need Hermione to complete the gang now!

Are the Christmas jumper minifigs advent exclusives?

  67. Nicole says:

I reckon there is a good chance there are 2 more house banners to go 🙁

  68. Baxter says:

The Harry Potter calendar has but a bit of a disappointment. Outside of the Hogwarts Express, the rest of the builds have been house banners and kind of generic castle builds. Hoping it picks up soon.

  69. Paul Castle says:

I ummed and ahh-ed quite a lot before buying the HP calendar in addition to the SW one. I’m not sure it’s been worth it so far, having little in the daily interest stakes. Still, it’s clearly a partworks set, and is priced the same as a small set, so I shall withhold my judgement until the 24th.

If they do another one next year, I’d rather have one in the SW mould, and more stuff like that train from Day 2.

    • Jen says:

Yes, will be interesting to review on the 24th when the “set” comes together. The minifigures in the knitted Christmas jumpers made this a must have for me.

A micro flying Ford Anglia car would be an awesome inclusion to go with the micro Hogwarts Express.

  70. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

Hilarious! For dinner I had turkey with potatoes! And the turkey is nearly as big as Harry!

  71. Luke says:

wow jay, I thought the turkey was pretty cool.

  72. Katie King says:

I can’t get the Day 4 tree put together! When I build the middle, the green sides don’t fit! Any tips?

    • Paul Castle says:

The yellow/brown studs are doubled up, if that helps?

    • Ms. Peterson says:

Did you ever get it to work? Make sure the “trunk” matches the one pictured, and don’t try to center the green pieces on the trunk. They are offset. The larger, left side of each green piece should fit onto the trunk. That’s been the hardest build so far. I’m having my 6th grade students build the pieces each day. It’s a lot of fun for us!

  73. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

For some odd reason I was excited when I opened day 7. It is a very nice piece. Er, 15 pieces.

  74. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

For once the box doesn’t spoil this awesome figure!

  75. JesCat says:

I’ve had a substantial number of extra pieces in almost every day so far (currently day 5). Every day I’ve had at least 3-5 extra pieces or duplicate pieces. This is my first Lego Advent purchase, is this normal? I know I get a few extra pieces (especially of small, easy to lose pieces) in normal Harry Potter Lego builds – but it seems like a lot so far.

As an aside, thank you so much for tracking this. I’m still relatively new to the world of Legos (as a 30 year old woman with a Masters degree, that might be surprising) but I’m in love with them and find them to be relaxing and just the all around best possible toy. Your posts really help me when I’m stuck on a build or want to hear some other thoughts.

    • Adriana says:

Hello. Yes, the advent calendars usually come with extra pieces. This one does have more than I’m used to but you didn’t miss a step. ?

    • InvisibleTimmy says:

Yes, it’s normal. Calendars have lots of small parts, so lots of extras. I’ve actually been quite excited with this set’s extras.

  76. Nicole says:

Is there instructions anywhere for this advent calendar? My kiddo is getting annoyed that I’m putting them together for her.

  77. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

I agree. But it is still a nice background piece.

  78. Paul Castle says:

I avoid looking at the box much, but from careless glances I suspect the whole set of 24 builds comes together as a single diorama on Christmas Eve, and we can expect several individually uninspiring builds, but that the final result will be worth it.

  79. Mike says:

At least you also got a cool X-Wing build in your SW calendar today. I’m doing HP and City so my second build of the day was an axe with a few round bricks that I assume are supposed to be either a deformed tree trunk or a log standing on a chopping block. At least it was the new axe from the 2019 City sets that I didn’t get… 😉

  80. Carrie says:

How did you get the tree to snap onto the pole? Mine keeps coming apart.

  81. Zach says:

I figured out how to put the tree together, instead of using one, 1×1 round stud, you have to use two stacked on top of each other, it’s really hard to see in the picture

  82. Lauren says:

I can not figure out how to put this tree together. Any assistance would be appreciated!

  83. Jean-Andrew Hodge says:

I think this tree is much better than the last two, I have roughly five lego Christmas trees and this one to me reins supreme!

Get it, reins, rain deer sled.

  84. Funny that we get three Christmas trees already, normally we are lucky to get one.

  85. Paul Castle says:

I love a lego christmas tree! Over the years, including this last black friday lego shop incentive gift, I’ve amassed a veritable garden of the things 🙂

  86. RedFox says:

I think you missed a Lego row on the Hogwarts express – there should be 3 levels of red, not two!

  87. Kenya says:

I’m really enjoying your reviews and look forward to day 4 tomorrow!

  88. sheridan says:

Hmmm – I’ve got a feeling that house banners are going to the Wizarding World version of weapons racks – we’ll find out soon!

  89. sheridan says:

I only have the Star Wars advent calendar, but had to pop over to see what was behind the HP doors – I love how you quoted the section where Harry opens his first chrismtas present!

    • Jay says:

You’re more than free to live vicariously through me for the Harry Potter calendar! Yeah, I try to source quotes where possible – Harry’s jumper was such a vivid memory for me when reading Harry Potter so I had to relive the section in the books 🙂

  90. Thanks, I was really wondering what those are, there is a proper Christmas tree later in the Calender so I was wondering if they were just decorations.

Ps, I did not open all the days, the proper Christmas tree is on the box.

  91. I love your blog, even though I immediately knew what it was, I always like to hear what you say about it!

  92. You still haven’t done day 1 and 2!

  93. Paul Castle says:

A beauty! This was a real treat that will nicely double as a Christmas toy for the three children in the set as a whole.

    • Jay says:

Haha yeah, such a brilliant build. Can’t wait to see what comes up in the calendar! I’ve stayed relatively spoiler-free, except for what’s on the box.

  94. Louise says:

As a three-person family, we’re doing Star Wars, HP & City Advent calendars this year.

I’m chuffed with the first figure and completely agree about the new design of the doors. No more ripped bits!

    • Jay says:

Whoa nice! I feel kinda weird not doing City, but that would’ve been WAY too much work for me.

The new door designs are great! I used to always have to be so careful lest I rip the older ones.

  95. Kelly C says:

Interestingly enough that my advent calendar window shows the Harry Potter minifig, but instead I got Hermoine! Hoping that they just swapped days so I still get Harry later on…..

    • Mike says:

If not, email Lego and let them know. I had that happen in a calendar a few years ago and they shipped out the missing figure.

    • Jay says:

Oh yikes, that’s very unusual but not unheard of. I’d write in to LEGO Customer Service and they’re usually kind enough to send out the right one. Would not be great to not get Harry!

  96. Paul Castle says:

I’m on two advent calendars this year: my ninth Star Wars, and first Harry Potter. Amazing to think the first movie was about 20 years ago now.

  97. Jen says:

There are so many memorable Christmas scenes within the Harry Potter books / movies, so it’s an excellent idea that Lego have released a Harry Potter advent calendar. Will be interesting to see whether this is a one off, or the first of many.

Very happy to see you are also doing daily posts for Harry Potter, in addition to the “traditional” Star Wars advent calendar. We are doing both calendars this year as well.

Delighted with the first ever Harry Potter advent build. Very fitting indeed to start with the titular character.
