LEGO debuts 10277 Crocodile Locomotive, a vintage classic from the golden age of rail travel

LEGO is going full steam ahead with its plan to get adult LEGO fans to surrender more and more money to them. In a year of plenty of surprise releases, I’d count LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive as one of them.

After being largely neglected over the last few years, it’s fantastic to see a proper LEGO Train in 2020 – in the not-Creator Expert LEGO black label branding which we first saw with the Haunted House.

The Crocodile Locomotive is a love letter to the golden age of rail – inspired by the Class Ce 6/8 II locomotive, first built for the Swiss Federal Railways between 1919 and 1927.

This 1271-piece LEGO locomotive will be priced at US$99.99/AU$169.99 and has a release date of 1 July 2020. In Australia, it will be exclusive to David Jones, as well as LEGO Certified Stores.

See below for regional prices and links:

  • LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive [US] – US$99.99
  • LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive [AU] – AU$169.99
  • LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive [UK] – £
  • LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive [EU] – €99.99
  • LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive [CA] – CA$

So I’m not a big train person at all – and don’t own a lot of LEGO trains. I think the last one I built was 10254 Winter Holiday Train way back in 2016.

That said, LEGO Train fans are some of the most passionate subcultures, so it’s nice to see LEGO extending some love to them after years of neglect.

It’s certainly quite unique, and undeniably a vintage classic train. I do like how it’s set up to be displayed like a standalone model.

The Crocodile Locomotive model measures over 6” (16cm) high, 20.5” (52cm) long and 3.5” (8cm) wide.

It also comes with its own UCS-plaque, and 2 minifigures – 2 engineers.

Like all LEGO trains, the Crocodile Locomotive is designed to be motorised. You’ll need add 1 x 88009 and 1 x 88013 Powered Up components which are sold separately.

The Powered Up integration will likely be a sticking point, as many hardcore LEGO Train Fans aren’t the biggest fan of Powered Up and prefer sticking to their 9V.

It certainly looks like LEGO is ready and willing to dip their toes back into vintage locomotives (with their last being the legendary Emerald Night) and if this sells well, it would tell LEGO that they’re on track onto something special here.

LEGO 10277 Crocodile Locomotive goes on sales on 1 July 2020, and will be available from LEGO.com.

Are you a classic LEGO Train fan? What do you think of the Crocodile Locomotive?

This model looks classy with great attention to detail. I ordered one first thing this morning and hope that it is the first of many classic locos.

I recently joined the LEGO train culture and playing catch-up. I will definitely be buying two of these at the very minimum. I even went to my local store hoping they me have an in store display unfortunately was informed they wouldn’t have in store until the online orders are full filled mid July august .
